By soft-key do you mean a virtual key on the magic toolbar? I use vim. A virtual key will not do.

You could remap your caps lock key to escape, though.* I'm currrently using that one as an additional command key, but if the physical escape key is gone, that's what I'll do.

* Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard > Modifier Keys

The FN key is still on the keyboard. My guess is that when you hold it down and theres something else on the toolbar, it will display the esc / brightness / music control buttons.

I'm sorry but you don't know what you're talking about. I'm a vim user and I do not use jj; I can't because 'jj' actually shows up in a lot of what I type (I frequently use 'jj' to represent a variable). I do, however, use CTRL-L as a shortcut for ESC. But this only works on my local version of vim, where I added that alias to my .vimrc.

When I ssh to remote *nix machines, which I have to do pretty frequently, I rely on the ESC key.

Huh? You can map keys from within Vim.

That doesn't make sense. Besides, you can map Esc to anything you want anyway.

What benefit does the liquid metal hinge bring over the traditional one?

It's metal. And liquid. jeez...

In seriousness it just can be much thinner and still stay sturdy. With plastic, if you make thinner, it will start wobbling.

Ctrl + [ also acts as Esc in vim. I use it all the time from my iPad Pro when I SSH in to servers.

That is true! I used to frequently run into an issue where it sometimes wouldn't recognize my CTRL key when I'd ssh to a remote server without fussing with terminal settings, so that's why I just got used to using ESC. The ESC key was my reliable failsafe.

There are other purposes for the Fn key than just modifying the Function keys on top of the keyboard. If you took it away, you'd be taking a lot of keys that currently require the Fn key to be replicated properly.

I know. I actually mentioned that in my first post. The problem is that I already use that as my CTRL key. I might be able to get used to the change, though. I'll give it a try for a few days and see if I can adapt.

Well they will remove all of the function keys too... so things will change and people will get used to it eventually :)

Then, I would say that you actually do have an issue with the KB mechanism used, as do many others. Apple has just quit giving a damn. It takes allot of courage to not give a damn I guess?
I use the butterfly keys on the Magic Keyboard, or whatever the current Bluetooth model is. I use it every day. There is nothing wrong with it. Works for me. Oh, I'm a "Pro" too. So I guess Apple does give a damn?

A touchscreen could serve the same purpose as the keyboard. A ThinkPad could serve the same purpose as a MacBook.

Talk about hyperbole... We are talking about one physical key that most people don't constantly use. Esc is used once in a while and being a soft-key makes little difference. Even Vim users can do without a physical Esc.

Just admit you don't want/are scared of change. That's fine. There are plenty of laptops with a physical Esc key for you to consider.

I need to have multiple out and in. Some is already over usb. usb-c would certainly help, but also means yet another one.
glad to hear it probably has a jack / must have misread

From personal experience I would seriously recommend investing in one interface that covers all your I/O needs. I spent far too long messing about with aggregated audio. The only time I'll ever use onboard audio is when I'm on a train.
