I'm hoping Apple implemented that with a little SoC of its own that will reliably provide function button functionality without any OS level drivers. I've seen plenty of Windows keyboards and laptops with a multitude of extra keys and functions and they all only work as well as their drivers. i.e. not very well, if at all.

The last thing we need is changing something reliable to something that is more expensive, harder to service AND less reliable.

I think this is the most likely route and will be the way we can use Windows in Bootcamp with the new touchbar.

Huh? You can map keys from within Vim.

"I can't because 'jj' actually shows up in a lot of what I type (I frequently use 'jj' to represent a variable)"

That doesn't make sense. Besides, you can map Esc to anything you want anyway.

I realize I can remap each and every time I ssh to a new machine, but it's pretty irritating to have to do that.

My issue with using 'jj' is that I typically use jj as an integer variable in the code that I write. I know, it's unusual, but a lot of my existing code does this.

hmmm. could the glass trackpad be of better use?

Nice concept... but you'd be looking up and down constantly - jsut make the screen touchscreen and we all know how Apple feel about that - Mixing OSs metaphors that they left Microsoft to completely screw up and get wrong! .
A function bar perhaps might actually be very useful instead of function keys. The issue is of course for Power users that use F-Keys a lot - they may not be as easy ironically for the touch typist.

Wow. It looks so good. And the 13" model has the speakers at either side.

I can't wait for this event now!

I find those speaker grilles look so ugly, was a nice feature of the 13" that they were not there.

Interesting to see these leaks from within just two days out from the event. I still hold out hope that the screen is touch as well, but that's so not going to happen.

Now they just need to find some pics of the ports!

Kinda funny to see people all worked up by lack of a physical Esc key.

Perhaps, just maybe, people are worked up because they use the esc key? Nah, that couldn't be it, could it? What do you think, Einstein?

As a developer I use the esc key hundreds, if not thousands of times daily. I was worried about having fiddly sliders for brightness and audio, but I was ready to deal with it. However, if there's no physical escape key, that might be the nail in the coffin for me.

Sure, I guess it's funny if you're completely incapable of understanding that some people rely on a key that you don't use. To the rest of us who either use the key, or understand that there are people who use it, it's not humorous.

Obviously a critical use case. My concern is why is the cancel button not in the corner where esc should be? it is positioned halfway between keys for some reason...

Perhaps there's another Touch ID button on the left side of the OLED strip. Seems about the right amount of space.

Ugh! this is going to make Emacs a real pain.
Wonder if they are screwing up the external keyboard too?
Not frustrating enough.

I use the butterfly keys on the Magic Keyboard, or whatever the current Bluetooth model is. I use it every day. There is nothing wrong with it. Works for me. Oh, I'm a "Pro" too. So I guess Apple does give a damn?

I've yet to meet someone, that doesn't hate the rMB keyboard, in the flesh. Have several customers, and acquaintances, that hate it, and regret their rMB purchases, because of it.

The majority of people having issues w/ the rMB KB grew up before schools stopped teaching typing, and also use their keyboards for quite a bit of data entry. (Invoices, Purchase Orders, call reports, scientific papers, etc)

I'm glad the Magic KB works for you, I know a few that use it, but dislike it, and only put off replacing it with a 3rd party KB due to the lack of better wireless options. (quite a few superior USB options, that I've found for customers willing to give up the wireless KB) Please understand that the Magic KB does have a bit more key travel then the KB on the rMB. They aren't entirely the same. I know people that hate the rMB KB, but are ok with the Magic KB. To someone that types a lot, even that slight difference can seem like allot, in daily use.

The point though, is that this is Apple's supposedly "Pro" laptop, that will only come with a KB that many users, that actually type, will hate.

And, yes, I'm sorry, but I call that, not giving a damn.

My screen always seems to go brighter when using Apple Pay on iPhone before going darker again.

Probably to make it easier to see which card you're using I'd imagine.

Thats a feature of Wallet. QR code readers like you see at airports need the screen to be at max brightness to read well.

Innovation

Touch buttons without physical click will be a total pain for anyone doing real work. Will be interesting to hear them try to market this as a pro machine.

We had a **** ton of these at work, they were the worst POS in the world. Constant breaking, constant false inputs.

If Apple puts one in, it's probably actually going to work, and ACTUALLY be dynamic instead of cycling between two icons for each slot.

I knew people were going to make this comparison, and this is totally Apples to Oranges.

With the light up Apple logo on the lid you mean..?

The light up logo on the lid is not visible while using the machine. The iPhone does not have branding on the front, the iPad does not and the current rMPB range does not either. It's a matter of taste but I see no need to be reminded that I'm using a Macbook Pro while I'm using it.

Isn't it more likely they're getting rid of the HDMI etc on the 13" MacBook rather than the MacBook Pros? I can't fathom a putatively pro machine being stripped of all ports used by professionals and replaced with a standard that is relatively nascent.

What is the consensus with regards to upgrading to a 1st gen product? Should we wait for the refresh next year before upgrading? Get the kinks worked out?

USB C should carry HDMI but you have to buy a dongle or a dedicated cable.

Hah, you are talking to a microbiologist. It's Helicobacter pylori :) And it is actually the combination of the bacterial infection and stress that typically cause ulcers.

Totally OT, but it's because stress lowers the immune system, making it more prone to the bacterial infection, no?
