Images of an unreleased Apple MagSafe charging accessory called the "Apple Magic Charger" have surfaced online over the past couple of weeks.

Rare Apple product collector and Twitter user "TheBlueMister" first shared images of the unreleased accessory earlier this month. Since then, other collectors based in Asia seem to have got their hands on Design Validation Test (DVT) versions of the device and are sharing images of it online.

TheBlueMister has set about disassembling the accessory to restore it to working order, showing some of this process on Twitter. Connection to a Mac reveals that the unreleased accessory is called the "Apple Magic Charger."

The accessory features a rubberized white MagSafe charger inside an anodized aluminum rounded square that can be pushed out into a vertical position. It seemingly has a Space Gray finish and includes a white rubberized base to keep it in place on a surface, as well as a built-in braided USB-C charging cable. It also appears to bear a resemblance to the iPhone Lightning Dock. The Twitter user known as "DuanRui" today shared additional images of the unreleased Apple Magic Charger.

The accessory's design is similar to the hinged Apple Watch charger on the MagSafe Duo and the now-discontinued Apple Watch Magnetic Charging Dock, and is the first time a MagSafe charger has been seen in a hinged implementation on an official Apple accessory.

The design seems to be somewhat limited for the iPhone since it cannot be pushed upright in portrait orientation on the charger, proving useful for watching content in landscape mode only. The MagSafe puck could, of course, still charge an iPhone when flat, as well as AirPods that have a MagSafe Charging Case.

TheBlueMister says that an early version of the Apple Magic Charger's design was limited to keeping an iPhone in the upright, horizontal position only, and these limitations were apparently among the key reasons that Apple canned the product.

Nice. I've never understood the appeal of wanting to pick up your phone and have the charging puck come with it. If I wanted to do that I'd just plug it in to a Lightning cord. When there were first rumors of a magnetic charging puck (MagSafe) I assumed the idea was to address the way Qi chargers can be kind of finicky with alignment, but then it turned out to be something Apple expected you to either leave on, or manually pry off with your fingers when you pick it up. I guess this weighted thing would address that.

Interesting that it’s USB-C…
Personally hoping for a new MagSafe Duo.
I have one, and even though it’s really really nice, it’s also just very flawed.
Things it should have:
Aluminum or plastic shell for the two halves.
Stronger less flimsy feeling bending mechanism.
A notched system, so when you pick it up when it’s unfolded, it stays unfolded instead of flopping around.
Slightly raised magnetic circle, so it doesn’t interfere with the camera on newer iPhones.
Stronger magnets.
Fast charging support for Apple Watch series 7 and newer.
USB-C.
As it is right now, it’s not worth $129.

Yep, exactly. The older Belkin QI charger I've got lets you just sit a phone on it and pick it up without it trying to stick magnetically to the back of the phone. But it's ridiculously picky about the alignment. I often wake up to find my phone didn't charge at all on it, because it wasn't placed just right on it.

I got tired of that and bought a newer magnetic puck charger made for iOS devices. Solves the alignment issue since you can feel when the phone is aligned properly with the magnets on it -- but you have to pry it off the phone each time, which is just annoying and makes it feel cheap.

Hard to believe Apple didn't address this long ago with a better product.

My Ultra has rendered most of my charging docks useless due to the bigger back. Excited to see some new products.

So what would be nice, is if this was a central or main charger with MagSafe for iPhone. Then the part that’s “magic” is that you can connect adapters/other charging pieces/docks to charge (up to) two additional Apple product you own, such as Apple Watch or AirPods. Kind of like customizing your own charger and giving a nod to the canned AirPower charging device.

Magic:
  • Wireless mouse with multi-touch
  • Wireless trackpad with multi-touch
  • Wireless Mac keyboard with Touch ID
  • Wireless Mac keyboard with… just a keyboard
  • Magnetic iPad keyboard that makes the iPad “float”
  • Overpriced slow wireless charger that stands upright.
I hope it’s not a trend that they use “Magic” and “Smart” for things that are indisputably standard.

I got one of those poster double stick wall attachers and taped my mag safe charger to the counter.

The fact that it can connect to a computer and be recognized, maybe means that’s gonna be able to transfer data as well? And that will definitely mean portless iPhone 15….:(

sick. This is what a real leak is

Is this a smart catapult?
Haha thank you, this is one of the most genuinely funny comments I’ve seen in a while. It didn’t even occur to me at first, looking at the photos.

I’m curious how the angling will work if the iPhone isn’t in landscape orientation. Interesting accessory, nonetheless, I hope it gets released.

I think it has something to do with whether it has a keyboard or not? ;)

Pretty sweet. The braided cable makes me think this is unreleased upcoming product (or recent prototype) versus an older scrapped project - but that could just be wishful thinking on my part!
My thoughts too. Much more likely than a prototype that's been canned.
