Those pins (contact charging) were way more efficient with energy transfer! I wish Apple had gone in that direction, basically like the pins on the back of iPads but with MagSafe, rather than the inefficient, extra heat producing, and I think more space using inductive charging. It's kind of ironic that all of this wireless charging nonsense is essentially just trying to replicate docking functionality we've had forever (minus the pins):

Yeah, likely from a third party. I’ve got a square flat piece of aluminum, slightly bent. Probably part of some new product Apple didn’t release. Please, everyone, like and follow my tweets! This is not a product Apple would release. The iPhone charging spot is too high on the phone. The moment you tilt this up you could only charge the phone in landscape mode. Fake product. I can't imagine this is even a prototype. An Apple product wouldn't get to this stage without someone realizing the function fail here.
these limitations were apparently among the key reasons that Apple canned the product.
You know what: it is actually a wonderful idea! I guess there is enough place for wireless charging as any mouse is much thicker than an average smartphone. Even Apple Watch has it and it is tiny compared to Magic MouseWonder if the Magic Mouse will soon be chargeable this way instead of the Lightning port on the bottom? Not sure if there'd be room for a MagSafe connection in the mouse though.
Thats fine for a charging pad, but this literally won't work if it is tilted.Believe it or not, sometimes people lay their phone down and (gasp) don't look at it for a while.
Gotta think outside the box, can't limit ourselves to what we have/know today. Maybe the 'Magic' part is activating a nightstand mode that we currently don't have. I'd probably want my phone sideways if there was such a thing, like a real clock. So you can't put an iPhone on it in it's normal, vertical orientation.
If you put it horizontal as designed, your iPhone lock screen/clock won't display correctly, let alone the home screen doesn't support horizontal layouts.
Can't believe it was even a prototype with that sort of thinking.
I mean, it's not like Apple hasn't made silly design decisions before. Take a look at the Magic Mouse 2, charging port is at the bottom and can't use it while charging. Or the first gen Apple Pencil that turns your iPad into a large lollipop; and the recently released adapter for it (could have just been a simple female lightning to male USB-C adapter, instead of also having to carry around a cable for it). This is not a product Apple would release. The iPhone charging spot is too high on the phone. The moment you tilt this up you could only charge the phone in landscape mode. Fake product. I can't imagine this is even a prototype. What is so "magic" about this charger?
Heck what is so "magic" about the "magic mouse", "magic keyboard" & "magic trackpad" anyway?
Did someone whisper marketing gimmicks?
Introducing the first folding iDevice...Introducing the Magic Toilet Seat.
Only $399
If you look at it and the first thing you think is "toilet seat", that says more about you than about the charger. The real reason this was cancelled? It looks too much like a toilet seat.
Yup. Never occurred to me to have the phone propped up like that. I just lie it flat and ignore it most of the time. An advantage to a smaller mag safe foot print is how easy it is to have it charging while still using it lying down in bed. I can easily pivot the wire in any direction so it's out of the way (unlike when charging by lightning cable).Believe it or not, sometimes people lay their phone down and (gasp) don't look at it for a while.
This was my first thought as well. The design seems to be somewhat limited for the iPhone since it cannot be pushed upright in portrait orientation on the charger, proving useful for watching content in landscape mode only
