i think this thing looks fantastic. Limited, for sure, but def aesthetically pleasing enough to want one. Of course it would probably retail for $100+....

It's kind of ironic that all of this wireless charging nonsense is essentially just trying to replicate docking functionality we've had forever (minus the pins):

Those pins (contact charging) were way more efficient with energy transfer! I wish Apple had gone in that direction, basically like the pins on the back of iPads but with MagSafe, rather than the inefficient, extra heat producing, and I think more space using inductive charging.

This is not a product Apple would release. The iPhone charging spot is too high on the phone. The moment you tilt this up you could only charge the phone in landscape mode. Fake product. I can't imagine this is even a prototype. An Apple product wouldn't get to this stage without someone realizing the function fail here.
Yeah, likely from a third party. I’ve got a square flat piece of aluminum, slightly bent. Probably part of some new product Apple didn’t release. Please, everyone, like and follow my tweets!

Talk about beating a dead horse. "Magic This", "Magic That," "Magic Keyboard" (c'mon, it's a keyboard, for pete's sake!), "Magic Mouse," magic morsels for you to eat to encourage you buy the latest and most expensive Apple product....

What's so magic, so special, so different about these devices? Oh, maybe they only work with the latest macOS and Mac hardware. And, of course, "Magic Dollars" for Apple!

these limitations were apparently among the key reasons that Apple canned the product.

The project, from what I heard from close industrial source, is NOT dead. Apple did go back to drawing board and came up with design that stands up for portrait orientation charging. (Which has still not entered testing production, prototypes locked up in Cupertino)

Apple decided to hold back on final release till iPhone 15, where MagSafe will support higher wattage for faster charging. It won’t be cheap though when it is released, maybe around $40-60 range.

Wonder if the Magic Mouse will soon be chargeable this way instead of the Lightning port on the bottom? Not sure if there'd be room for a MagSafe connection in the mouse though.
You know what: it is actually a wonderful idea! I guess there is enough place for wireless charging as any mouse is much thicker than an average smartphone. Even Apple Watch has it and it is tiny compared to Magic Mouse

So you can't put an iPhone on it in it's normal, vertical orientation.
If you put it horizontal as designed, your iPhone lock screen/clock won't display correctly, let alone the home screen doesn't support horizontal layouts.

Can't believe it was even a prototype with that sort of thinking.
Gotta think outside the box, can't limit ourselves to what we have/know today. Maybe the 'Magic' part is activating a nightstand mode that we currently don't have. I'd probably want my phone sideways if there was such a thing, like a real clock.

I mean, it's not like Apple hasn't made silly design decisions before. Take a look at the Magic Mouse 2, charging port is at the bottom and can't use it while charging. Or the first gen Apple Pencil that turns your iPad into a large lollipop; and the recently released adapter for it (could have just been a simple female lightning to male USB-C adapter, instead of also having to carry around a cable for it).

Here is what I use for my Apple Watch. Its a Spigen mini stand that accepts the standard charging puck. I have it attached with double side tape to my iMac stand. The watch rests on a little shelf so it lines up perfectly. When its charged I just pull it off the charger

Looks really interesting, if it was a bigger pad, you can just put all your electronics on it to charge, that would be great.

Believe it or not, sometimes people lay their phone down and (gasp) don't look at it for a while.
Yup. Never occurred to me to have the phone propped up like that. I just lie it flat and ignore it most of the time. An advantage to a smaller mag safe foot print is how easy it is to have it charging while still using it lying down in bed. I can easily pivot the wire in any direction so it's out of the way (unlike when charging by lightning cable).

Sure, there are advantages and disadvantages to either design. For me, I prefer the one with the smaller footprint that's lighter.

Must be to compensate the ridiculously thicc camera bumps on the 14Pros?

Magsafe Duo was a great charging dock until it doesn’t fit because of the bump.

I love Apple products and am "all in" on the ecosystem, but this silliness of calling everything "magic", "magical", "pro", "ultra", and the reality distortion-field-esque reveals of the products do a disservice to the products themselves IMO.

Apple is wildly successful, so of course, their marketing seems to be working, I'm not debating or questioning that, but expressing that it's a weird world when a *charger* that moves positions and uses magnets and technology known to humanity for many decades (or more) is somehow "magical".

The only thing "magical" is that there are people who can look themselves in the mirror and not vomit immediately when they come up with these names and/or approve them for market. That definitely takes some magic.
