All these Gmail critics and haters and yet iCloud.com is slow as hell to do anything and Mail(on iCloud.com) doesn't even have threaded conversations (yet it exists for iOS and macOS). Here's another great one for you guys... why doesn't having read mail on iCloud.com sync with my iOS device. The damn badge app icon for Mail on my iPhone will just continue showing 1 new mail when I've already read the message on my iCloud.com(Windows work computer). Gmail had this working literally 10 years ago. It was instant and worked perfectly 100% of the time. But yea, Gmail sucks, right guys?

iCloud looks about 10 years out of date, so I guess good for Google for at least updating their web apps. I don’t understand why Apple just sits on its hands with iCloud.com. iMessage on the web would be amazing.
Exactly! The only update they've done to iCloud.com recently is they changed the colour of the background(not the actual "Home" page wallpaper, just the colour of it) I think. iCloud.com is annoyingly too basic. iMessage is a joke at this point. Telegram for me has been a huge upgrade. Being able to have it open on my Windows work computer, so nice to be slowly breaking free from the walled garden. Switching to Gmail will be next for me most likely.

Design-wise, is iCloud really out of date? It's pretty analogous to the way Mail, Calendar, Notes and Photos all work on iOS and Mac. I will agree that the Gmail interface is generally a lot more flexible and powerful than iCloud Mail. I happen to think iCloud Mail looks slick, but it doesn't do much.

Function-wise, iCloud.com seems like it's doing a pretty good job of letting you get at your iOS and Mac iCloud apps from any browser. Edits to Notes and Calendars show up pretty much instantly from your phone. The Photos functionality is surprisingly good. I don't use the website a whole lot because I'm on my own Mac -- but back when I had a day job sitting in front of a PC, I'd have been psyched to be able to get to that stuff without digging into my phone.

I totally agree with you on iMessage, though. Maybe that will come with the whole "iMessage in the cloud" thing that was supposed to be in iOS 11 and didn't make it in yet. We can dream, anyway.

Stopped using Gmail in my main email more than a year ago. Moved to ProtonMail and a Plus Member for extra features including my own domains. I prefer security.
Thanks for posting this, I am definitely going to look into Proton Mail.

Don’t have this issue with my iOS devices. Has this always happened to you? What happens when you refresh Mail on iOS?

I too use iCloud mail and have been happy with it. No more Gmail for me.

Gmail would be great if it weren't for the invasion of privacy.

I would like to see Apple focus on making Mail an even better email application, and tie any such work in with the iCloud Mail app so they're both improved.
I thought this article describes the sentiment pretty well.

I will use Google services when I can pay for the service and not get exploited.

Looks good I guess... not really that much different. I use gmail all day long

I can never use the macOS or iOS mail apps because IMAP doesn't support the "send mail as" feature within gmail for all my aliases (within that 1 g suite corporate account).

ie: my account is name@company.com but I also can receive and send as sales@company.com or support@company.com and I have the same for companyB.com and companyC.com etc.

I have to use gmail for work and I absolutely hate it. Microsoft is far from perfect but its worlds better to me.

Yay! I LOVE GUI redesigns just for the fun of it (like Skype!) You know where everything is and can work nice and efficiently and then just like Costco, they come and move everything randomly everywhere and it's like day one all over again! How fun! Where's the damn share button? I can't find it! Hey, that's the idea! It's always great when perfectly functional software is made unfunctional again just so it can somewhat resemble some other popular app like snapchat!

Google demonstrates again that they can teach master classes in how not to design a UI, is all I can say.

I'd hope not, since sending mail has zero to do with IMAP. Not to minimize whatever the pain-point is, but that's not what it is.

Old one is just fine, they need to work on google maps. Turn by turn is now less good than Apple Maps Turn by turn. Also, frame rate suck, Apple map can support 120hz rendering on iPad Pro, google is probably 30hz. Use dGPU please.

It makes no sense. Every section and even icons are all the same stark white. It's far more difficult to figure out where things are.

Yet like so many other terrible design elements, it's becoming the popular norm across websites, software, and operating systems.

Does anyone know why the major tech OS and app vendors seem to be so resistant to rolling out full dark modes?

(except maybe for Microsoft)

Agree, that in the era of super bright clear colour corrected screens, having vast fields of glaring white is really starting to hurt my eyes. I have to turn the brightness way down.

I actually really like what they did with Calendar, and these screenshots of Gmail look pretty good to me.

I hope they don’t **** it up like with the calendar redesign.

The new version is awful for anyone that uses a large number of calendars. You can no longer edit calendar entries from the event card either, you have to completely load a new page. It’s so frustrating for a business that relies on heavy calendar usage and edits and moves bookings frequently.

They’re so obsessed with adding white space everywhere and putting stupid images in the background of cards if they think it’s a lunch or gym appointment. Just make the bloody thing function and readable instead of adding all this nonsense and taking away existing features

Less good how?

I love how bland and boring this new "flat" UI trend is. I have a general distaste for all things fun and beautiful, so to me, lots of featureless plain white background really just makes my day. /sarcasm

Other than that, good job. Heh heh.

Yes, who's the IDIOT that thinks White-on-White is a good design, that idiot should be FIRED.

Lane tracking accurecy and early lane change and exit warning. Google always think I am on the road below me. It also tells me that I need to exit when it's too late to do so.
Strange, it's pretty much the opposite for me when it comes to those things. Might just depend on the map data that is being used for different areas by the different services.
