Does the IMP500 from imax power trigger the not compatible with iphone message when connected to the 3g? I understand that the device works regardless, but i only want to purchase items that have been "officially" made compatible with the iphone 3g. thanks.

It doesn't trigger that message. I've used it to charge 3 full cycles so far, no error messages like that. Their package doesn't include that "Made for iPod/iPhone" seal just to let you know, but it works fine.

I asked them, here's their response:
Hi,
This is normal. Since your iphone is on, it will need some minimum current to keep it on. This current will make led on for the charger. Its current is very low and it won't damage iphone.
For the 2nd question, it won't damage your battery also. Thanks

Just an update,
So I had this battery for a week and I must say I'm impressed. It can give your iPhone up to 4.5 times of fully charges battery. The external battery can be fully charged in a span of roughly 1.5hrs. The only flaw that I found with this battery is like what everybody said, there's no automatic turn off feature when the iPhone is fully charged, as well as when you're charging the battery itself. Other than that I'm impressed. I used it to play games on my iPhone so I don't have to be near a wall or computer.

It turn out that this battery pack can powerup G1 phone as well. Just order one mini-uSB from them. It works great so far. I plan to get 4-5 pcs for my friends as Christmas gift.🙂

Some update for imaxpower battery extender
10 days ago I bought this imp500 from this online store

So far this battery pack worked really well with my 3G iphone and G1 phone. After fully recharged powerpack, we can use this battery pack to charge up 3G iphone by 4.7 cycles which is pretty much closed to 500%. I did an experiment, if charge iphone from 0% to 100% battery level, if use this powerpack, it will take less than 1.5 hours, if use iphone original AC wall charger, it will also take less than 1.5 hours. So the charging speed is very comparable.
Regarding the charging LED not off after fully charge, I also contacted them and they give me this reply, a very reasonable explanation. They told me this can be fixed very easily. I don't worry about this too much. Here is their reply regarding the LED issue, FYI...

Therefore the current needed for keeping led light on is very small, which is less than 10mA. This current is so small that it can never never damage your 3G iphone. We have been measured the current 1000 times and it is very stable and safe
In fact, this LED can be automatically turned off if the users prefer it to be off after a fully charging up. Our engineer just need to adjust the LED trigger threshold a little bit to shut LED off after a fully charge up if this user's preference. We will change it next time.

That's a more detailed explanation compared to the one they gave me above. Yup so far I'm happy with this battery pack. If only I can find this a pouch so the cables/ports will be in one solid place.

I bought this product, its got crazy power to spare. Looks nice and they have really good customer service to boot! No I dont work for them but its just nice to find a good product from an internet company. With the correct tips this will power any number of other devices, I use it to power my Nokia N82 phone as well. Buy one you wont be dissapointed.
IMP500 is way good!
I just received my IMAXPOWER IMP500 and am way happy. I previously had an iPWR battery that went on the bottom of my phone and required me to take off the case to charge from it. The IMP500 has 3x the power that had and no more taking off my case! I am way happy with this purchase! Thanks to all the users on here leading me in the right direction. I, like so many of you, was seeking a reasonable and convenient way to extend my iPod usage while traveling and without having to pack all those extras. I currently use my Imaxpower 5000mAh battery pack for traveling with my iPod Touch and my wife's iPod Nano. After a lengthy search for a convenient battery source for our iPods and my iPod Touch we came upon the Imaxpower battery pack IMP500. The web site videos were thorough, complete, and made the operation of charging or using while charging for our iPods very simple. After acquiring one, it is as simple as it appears and after two weeks of charge, play to expend, and recharge, it continues to work brilliantly, both for recharging and using while our iPods charge. On the older 40gb iPod Photo we got four full charges from one charge of the Imaxpower battery pack. While we have no photos only around 2000 songs, my play cycle is about 8 to 10 hours per charge. I am having similar positive results with my new 2nd generation 16gb iPod Touch. With several long distance airline trips in the near future, I can rest assured that we will be listening for many hours because of the Imaxpower IMP500. Does anyone know--can the imp500 be charged with a wall charger. Doesn't seem to show one coming with it, only usb? Does it come with one?

Yes it can be charged with a wall charger (like the one your iPhone came with)

I travel and fly a lot and I was constantly draining my phone before I got off the plane. The iMax is the only battery I've found that really has juice to spare for running and charging the iPhone.
This battery allows me to use the iPhone for many hours and still leave the plane with a charged phone. I also use the battery to charge the phone if I am at a gig or other public place. Rather than plug it into an outlet, out in the open, Ill leave my phone in my case out of sight, charging discreetly. Anytime I find myself stationary for a while, I pull out the external battery and use it, leaving my phone more topped off for when Im on the move.
This battery has worked flawlessly for me so far (about a month of pretty heavy use). The phones automatic charge status works perfectly, (letting me know when the phone has received a full charge, just like it does with the Apple AC charger). The battery has never gotten hot or malfunctioned. For the price, its incredibly convenient. I never have to think about conserving my battery power anymore just to get through the day. I'm liking it lots and just wont travel without it.

Just got my new 3Gs iPhone last week. Not happy with the battery life especially with 3.0 firmware loaded with new phone. Battery drain like crazy. Somethings fishy. Same English as Youtube reviewer and the iPhone must be plugged into wall outlet if at 0%. Additionally, the time doesn't match with a) USB recharge time b) wall rechrge time c) the person who independently uses one below.

my only complaint about the imax is the plug tends to pull out of the unit with little effort. so if it is in your pocket or where it gets bumped it may not be charging. I fixed with some tape on the usb plug. Plus I am using a older locking apple cable a the one that came with the imax would come out of the phone.

If you guys read the first page, you'd notice I purchased mine back in Nov '08. Let me tell you up till now I still constantly use it and it still charges my iPhone 3G upto 3.5 times which is pretty cool for that price. Highly recommended for all those who can't live up to the end of the day with an iPhone.
