i have the same problem, itunes on my macpro does not see appleTV, and yet its on the same network

So here is what I did. Open iTV go to settings/computer/delete old file/add new iTunes --- a 5 digit number pops up to allow you to synch with your computer. Your computer should now be showing the iTV icon with (click here to ??). This will permit pairing between iMac and iTV.

I agree: New Hardware Needed

I think it is buggy largely because of the outdated hardware. I don't think it can handle all the tasks the Apple TV has to perform.

I tend to agree you. Aside from the big features, Apple does keep making subtle improvements to the software and I think it's really starting to mature. That's saying a lot seeing how the software from version 1.0 was already better than all the other media players out there. However, all the things they're trying to do with it do seem to be taking a toll on the current hardware. I love my AppleTV but I would like to see something that supports 1080p HD (which will mean more processing power) and a bigger hard-drive.

Cheers.

Hi all,

there is a switching issue with 1080 in ATV 3.0. When in 1080i, change the TV's input to something for 30 secs and the try and change back to the ATV. It stop responding, only way I found for now to work round is to change to 720.
anyone try this with 3.0.1 before I update? or I can give it a go if you like.

Just to let you all know. 3.0.1 does NOT fix this resolution issue. Please keep your max res as 720p for now..

bad Apple, bad bad Apple.. if apple was a dog I would rub it's nose in my Apple TV.. lol
:p

Installed the update which kicked off a re-sync of content automatically. After it was done syncing it worked fine. (Not including other bugs that have not been resolved)

It kept all of my favorites and wishlists which was good. I bought a TV show and rented a movie afterwords with no problem.

So you are therefore the exact OPPOSITE of what Apple's article describes and what some of us experienced - if Apple TV 3.0 was NOT used for a length of time the thing suddenly lost everything.
Well, how long did you have to wait? I wasn't using it 24-hours per day. It was idle during the time that I slept and for multiple hours during other parts of the day. I think the issue was that it only affected some installations (for whatever reason).

The Notification Looked Suspicious To Me, Too.

I received the e-mail but it looked like a phishing e-mail, didn't come from apple.com, and Mail.app marked it as spam. Apple needs to do better than this at notification.

Still running 3.0. I have not yet updated, also because the e-mail looked suspicious. I went to the Apple TV Support site and didn't find any mention of an update.

Anybody else think the e-mail looked suspicious? Are you all sure it came from Apple? When was the last time you received and individual unsolicited support e-mail from Apple?

The device only downloads from Apple, unless you hack it, so there's no concern about it being suspicious.

further evidence that this device is doomed.

You dont have this issue with physical media:D
Unless your one and only disc becomes damaged or deteriorates with age (although pretty rare, the latter can definitely happen in just a few years, DVDs and CDs have a claimed lifetime of 100+ years but practice is showing that some will last for only a small fraction of that time).
