you are ok with your paid content dissapearing? thats like saying you paid for and oil change, and it all leaked out but its "ok"
That's a pretty stupid analogy. You can't press a button and get your oil back.

yeah because slower cpus and ram in mac hardware is obviously superior
In your Dell mini 9 hackintosh, yes, you have a crappy CPU and slow RAM.

iMac cannot see iTV since update.

I did the download successfully. However, my iMac does not see the iTV. The green light on the iTV is blank. The network settings are right on and the Network test was successful. So whats up? I have tried everything but AppleCare. Tomorrow unless I figure this out. Yes, I rebooted Airport.

i have the same problem, itunes on my macpro does not see appleTV, and yet its on the same network

3.01 seemed to solve many of the issues I was noticing with 3.0. However, I do notice one very tangible difference. In prior (to 3.0) versions, if you clicked on the drop down arrow next to the :apple:TV icon in itunes, it would show essentially a copy of all of your music, movies, tv shows, etc folders in iTunes. You could click them and it would show ghosted-out (faded) lists of all of the same music, movies, tv shows, etc in the main area. You couldn't select them or anything, but it was a way to compare- say- your movies list to the movies list accepted by :apple:TV and notice if some movies in iTunes would not play on :apple:TV.

Now it appears 3.0+ uses the :apple:TV dupes of your music, movies, tv shows, etc. folders to show ONLY what is actually on the :apple:TV (synched there). So, for example, now I might have 100 TV shows in my iTunes TV shows library. But if I've only synched some of them to :apple:TV, only those synched show in the :apple:TV's version of TV shows- not all 100. All 100 show up in the :apple:TV My TV Shows menu, but just not in iTunes :apple:TV TV Shows list.

I stream all of my movies, so NOW :apple:TV's Movies folder shows nothing (empty), where prior to 3.0 it showed the same list of movies in my iTunes movie folder. Again, :apple:TV 3.01 sees all of the movies- and plays them- but this is a change in how iTunes shows information relative to :apple:TV.

When I upgraded to 3.0, this change made me believe the problem might be in iTunes, given how things were before vs. now. If :apple:TV 3.0 couldn't actually play a movie (which was the case in my situation), was it because there was not ghosted movie list in apple:TV's movie list? Now with 3.01, there is still an empty movies list, but it sees the movies and plays them just like before.

Do people get disciplined/sacked for things like this? These seemingly endless updates that then proceed to cause issues are massively damaging Apple's reputation in many people's eyes.

Somone must sign-off software prior to release - someone must be responsible for taking some software that didn't delete data and rewriting it to include a problem that does delete data.

I can't believe people at Apple just roll their eyes, put down their coffee and start writing the update to put right what they put wrong (and then seemingly make it wrong again - see above with 3.0.1 stopping ATV being recognised).

Personally, I've lost all faith in Apple's software updates. Thankfully I didn't go to 3.0 and I won't go to 3.0.1 for several weeks.

Wow

5 Pages and nobody has blamed Google, Adobe, Microsoft or Steve Balllmer for this issues. That's new

Although even when it comes to Apple TV's buggy update, there are people who still find the reason to declare Micorosft dead. Makes you wonder....

I must say on a mac land, everything just works. I'm happy that Apple is trying to free up HDD space on their users' harddrive without a single input from the user itself. Saves you from buying more HDDs

Am I the only one here who was using the ATV standalone?

I just lost over $200 worth of content. Do I have any recourse?

You damn well better have recourse. The official policy of the iTunes store is that you can only download a purchased item once and then it's up to you to make backups. That's in line with most other non-subscription services and it's a reasonable policy in that 1) Apple is not providing you with a free remote backup service, 2) you don't get free replacements of physical products if you lose them and 3) it's probably a concession to record labels and movie studios, without which Apple couldn't offer the content to begin with.

However, Apple wants happy customers. In my experience you will get reasonable recourse from Apple simply by not taking "no" for an answer (and in most cases simply by asking). You suffered financial loss due to a bug acknowledged by Apple. They have a record of your purchases and undoubtedly have the ability to allow you to download them again. If their refusal to do that would make you less likely to buy an Apple product in the future, they will "make an exception" to keep you happy.

By way of example, my brother's old G4 eMac recently started freaking out with what was obviously a hardware issue (corrupted graphics, etc.). It turns out Apple had issued a recall for this problem some years ago (bad capacitors that leaked with age) but the recall expired about 6 months ago. Apple customer service at first said they couldn't do anything, the recall had expired, blah blah. My brother said "no, I need this computer for school and I can't afford to fix it." Then they offered to cover the cost of a new logic board but he would have to pay for labor. Again he refused, pointing out that it was an acknowledged defect and that he couldn't afford the labor. They finally agreed to cover 100% of the cost and today he has a perfectly functioning G4 eMac without paying a dime out of pocket. The rationale he used didn't really matter. The key was that he made it clear that there was only one solution that would make him happy: a full repair covered by Apple. That incident cost Apple a little bit of money in the short term, but guess what my brother's next computer will be? A new iMac, of course. Because, ultimately, Apple took care of his problem even though they were not (legally or otherwise) obligated to do so.

In your case I would hope that simply asking would be enough. But if that doesn't work, make the case that either they replace your purchased content or they risk losing you as a customer. You're not asking for a favor, you're telling them that their bug deleted your content and it's their responsibility to replace it.

HTH

I applied the update last night. After the updates all content was still there. This morning I look and all synced content is gone. I'm re-syncing right now. Funny thing is that my other apple TV did not loose it's content, and they are both synced identically.

They are working on it, there have been no less than 5 developer seeds of 10.6.2 all fixing 150+ bugs. Obviously they are doing very thorough testing before releasing because with a bug like that you have to ensure it is fixed before letting it lose on the public.

As opposed to doing no beta testing, and letting the bug loose in the first place?

You Apple fans have a pretty perverted sense of quality.

Thank you for pointing that out. Although I understand how you used that feature, I'm actually happy they changed it because before I had so much content that I couldn't tell what was actually synced to the HD of my :apple:TV. Now that they made that change, like an ipod or any other device hooked up to itunes, I can tell what content is actually on the device. Goes to show what some people consider a bug, others might consider an enhancement.

Lost all of my content.

I lost all of my movies, TV shows, etc., not music or photos. Took 7 hours to download the update. Syncing now. Apple TV is a wonderful device, but has always had flakey software.

Damn, i had to factory reset my airport express base station, and setup a new network, then all my shows magically showed up again.
Re-syncing with new content now...
PITA

Content still there but just not visible

Dear all,

In my case, the content only appeared to have gone. However, using my iPod Touch with Remote (connected through WLAN), I could browse through the entire library and play all content (that my iMac and aTV wouldn't show).

Weird, but maybe some hope for the stand-alone user....

Now, I applied the update and it is syncing (which will take ages -> 95GB wireless....).

Regards, V

I've used the v3.0 upgrade on my Apple TV for dozens of hours over the last week and haven't had any serious problems.
So you are therefore the exact OPPOSITE of what Apple's article describes and what some of us experienced - if Apple TV 3.0 was NOT used for a length of time the thing suddenly lost everything.

I think it is buggy largely because of the outdated hardware. I don't think it can handle all the tasks the Apple TV has to perform.
Last I knew my Apple TV simply syncs, streams, and plays video? Oh and it has an (inconsistent) menu system. The hardware in the Apple TV is yawning, I assure you.

Yep, that's right: mine, my family's and my friends' Macs have always "just worked". That's true for the vast majority of Mac users the vast majority of the time. I'm sorry if it bothers you.

Interestingly, Windows also works for the majority of users, most of the time. So why the hate?

Use Front Row on any mac, and then tell me that the hardware isn't the cause of the slow menu system and choppy performance. Also it is the cause for the pathetic cap on video resolution and bit rate which is 720p (max of 24/25 fps) and 5000kbps.
