When I see people chime in like this, saying that they've been enjoying there Mac Pro for months now, etc.. (within context) The only thing that comes to mind is that they are slightly nervous of seeing the updated model roll out and being slightly jealous.

Anyways I just needed to vent a little. Thanks for your time.

Or they want to feel that they have made the right decision. In fact they don't need to do that at all, if they are enjoying their machine then fine, but many of us didn't have the cash to get a Mac Pro at the time, or did but it was far past it's update term and we felt that our money wasn't getting spent properly. It's all about perspective. I don't think they were wrong for buying their Mac Pros at all, and no one is wrong for waiting 2 months to put their $3000 to good use.

If a refurbished Quad 3 GHz becomes available as a refurb, I am sure many users will be getting them as well, while many will grab a 1600 MHz FSB Penryn running at 3.2 GHz. Then in a years time, those that bought in January will be enjoying their machines just like the current owners are enjoying theirs now.

Yes, exactly.

Here is a 100% reliable source for Apple update information:

Several people here have said 'F Apple, I'm getting a Dell 7400!', but it's a hollow threat. I'd like to see one person who was truly waiting for the new MP post that they bought a Dell instead.

We like to huff and puff and speculate on all the plausible permutations of imaginary release schedules, but 99.99999999999998999% of us will wait indefinitely because we really don't want to work on a Windows machine.

That said, I am going to wait. Period. And I love to speculate as much as the next Apple fan. The deal with the Pro line is that Apple knows how loyal their base is and aren't worrying about losing too many of us to Windows and PCs -- especially considering that Pros constitute a small portion of their revenue. Regardless of the fact that industry pros gave Apple their reputation as the "artist's choice", their marketing focus has shifted dramatically to mass i-consumers.

Hi guys,
Anyone here knows or have the slightest idea of 2008 Mac Pro specs and price?
Planning to get one myself, but not sure about the specs and pricing.
Thanks in advance

That's the main focus of this thread and many just like it. All speculation about the "new and upcoming" Mac Pro. Search and yea shall find aplenty.

Let's check out the pricing on this thing. 2x Quad cores @ 3.2GHz will run $5238, and that's with 1GB RAM, 80GB disk (yes, that's right, 80GB).

Here's some sample prices (all 2x quad, for 8 cores):

3.2GHz, 1600MHz bus: $5238
3.0GHz, 1600MHz bus: $4858

3.16GHz, 1333MHz bus: $4758
3.0GHz, 1333MHz bus: $4158
2.83GHz, 1333MHz bus: $3898
2.66GHz, 1333MHz bus: $3218
2.33GHz, 1333MHz bus: $2358
2.0GHz, 1333MHz bus: $1898

Is this list absolute?

Any chance of apple getting something exclusive (3.4ghz chip)? Similar to the way they surprised everyone with the 3.0ghz chip last time around? Then it's really worth being the last to the table with an updated rig.

Unlikely at this point. Those speeds will come though.

By the looks of the shipping dates, if Apple release 1600MHz FSB systems at Macworld they will be launching around the same time (within 1-2 weeks) of other vendors.

Expect the base spec to increase and lose the current Dual 2.0 configs.. and a cheaper 8 core option

Perhaps 2GB ram to become standard

I'm unimpressed with those Dell machines. They seem outrageously expensive, and well over what I've seen rumors of the expected apple prices. Sure they start lower but any octo core configuration is way out there. I'm really hoping the rumors are true and apple can deliver an 8 core machine for approximately the current base price (either at 3ghz or 2.8ghz).

For all the "Apple's overpriced" talk I hear, their high end seems to be QUITE reasonable (which is actually the opposite of Dell, which has decent deals on low end machines, but looks like it rapes you on the high end).

Also.. is Sesshi admittedly a Dell employee? He said "we" a few times in his little spiel, so either he's a SUPER Dell fanboy, or an employee. Either way, why harass Mac forums? Not that I'm opposed to people of other views than me, but it seems odd to go into a mac forum, and try to convince people to buy over priced machines simply because apple isn't competing yet.

...BTO Machines

They'll soon be here:

If I may paraphrase from the film 'Tommy Boy'...

Rustus: "Here's the way I see it, Sesshi. Guy puts a fancy guarantee on a box 'cause he wants you to feel all warm and toasty inside."

Sesshi: "Yeah, it makes a man feel good."

Rustus: "Of course it does. Why shouldn't it? You figure you put that little box under your pillow at night, the guarantee fairy might come by and leave a quarter, am I right, Sesshi?"

Sesshi: "What's your point?"

Rustus: "The point is, how do you know the fairy isn't a crazy glue sniffer? 'Building model airplanes', say's the little fairy. Well, we're not buying it. He sneaks into your house once, that's all it takes. Next thing you know, there's money missing off the dresser and your daughter's knocked up. I've seen it a hundred times."

Sesshi: "But why do they put a guarantee on the box, then?"

Rustus: " 'Cause they know all they sold you was a guaranteed piece of s**t. That's all it is isn't it? Hey, if you want me to take a dump in a box and mark it guaranteed, I will. I got spare time. But for now, for your own sake, for your daughter's sake, you might want to think about buying a quality product from Apple."

This would be a pithy comeback, if the better-warranted Dells and HP's weren't more reliable than the Pros.

Oh dear.

See, you buy quality professional kit, there is a certain expectation of service to be offered. The reason perhaps why Dell and HP offers solid support services included in the cost of their premium Apple-comparable machines is possibly because it may never / rarely be used.

On the other hand Apple charges extra (and more than uplifting Dell's consumer support for example) for a poorer service perhaps because they know they can make money from a captive, Jobsitized clientele who learns that their stuff actually does need support.

Which one is the mug? :p
