The Compass app might be mostly useless but the fact that it can be used in Google Maps to show which way you're going is very useful and it's something a lot of people used to ask for.

And actually when I was traveling in Europe I used Compass along with a paper map to find my way around since using Maps would be too expensive with the roaming charges. So I'm really glad they added an actual app too instead of just the functionality in Maps.

Not to mention its use with astronomy and AR apps. Its weird when people only equate the compass with that one app and then dismiss it as a niche feature.

Long term the droid will probably become a better iPhone. Google can just throw millions of dollars at it. Apple can't afford to lose money for 10 years trying to compete.

Apple hasn't exactly been loosing money as they develop the platform, and they are working on advanced software and hardware** regardless of what we see in OS 3.0.

** You have to be a fool to think Apple is stagnating.

totally agree. I thought this way at first, but after using some apps that integrate with the compass (especially google maps), I dont think I would ever want a device without a compass.

If you had a brain you would have known that consumers choosing the iphone doesn't mean every consumer likes it. I suggest you go and take a class in introductory statistics before I even waste any more time with you.

Im glad you feel so passionately. I am not sure how to comment on "If you had a brain you would have known that consumers choosing the iphone doesn't mean every consumer likes it." I do know this (and was not aware we were having a discussion about this), and I'm not sure how you inferred that I was not aware of this info when you were reading...I was making a remark on a generalization that YOU made. I have not read any articles on customer satisfaction of the iphone, nor do I plan too. I'm sure there are a ton of people happy with their iphone, just like I was. As far as taking classes, I already graduated from college but thanks. Anyway, have fun with your iphone. I see you are well on your way to becoming a message board legend.

What I don't get is that for current iphone users...nothing on Andriod is going to make you switch. At the end of the day.

  1. iphone does internet - driod does internet
  2. Iphone does email - driod does email
  3. iphone has copy and past - droid has copy and paster
  4. iphone has MMS - driod has mms
  5. iphone has apps to get cool stuff - driod has uh...a number of apps
  6. iphone build is solid - droid is solid
  7. both are smartphones
  8. both play music - expect iphone does it better
  9. driod multi tasks, but really.....is that important when push does enough. i mean really? its more of a petpeeve then a hatred
  10. Itunes, apple integration with apple products is what really makes iphone work

The only thing to move to Droid is because Verizon is much more reliable. As for the phone. You having 3gs and moving to droid....thats like moving from a ferrari 430 to a ferrari california.

People are like OMG DRIOD >>>>> Iphone. How is that much better? at most, its even playing field and I'm not being bias. Its about the OS not the phone. People don't get that. Motorola did nothing much slap on Andriod 2.0 and put some hardware around it.

Which means more people wait....the better the hardware will get around that 2.0. It's that simple Andriod has so much up potential but its too sluggish and developers can't keep up on the hardware side. But at the end of the day, its a computer with a 4.3 inch screen. there is only so much you can do.

I wish people were more realistic.

I dunno, these 5 things would be enough to make me regret my purchase if I had actually gotten the iPhone before I knew about the Droid:

1. Camera w/ dual LED flash
2. Verizon network
3. Google Voice
4. Classic gaming system emulators
5. FREE navigation

Also, can you get Gchat / Gtalk on the iPhone? I use that constantly to talk to friends who have office jobs and are at their desks all day, instead of texting them all...

Some of the widgets are actually pretty awesome too... although I only use one for Wifi (so it's a single click on my home screen to switch it on and off).

Now that I think about it, I would have been really pissed at myself if I'd gotten stuck with an iPhone :p

Edit: Physical keyboard too!! We don't give a **** if you personally don't like it, at least the option is there for those who do.

The thing is, the droid takes awful pictures. Whether it has a "camera with dual flash", the camera is simply terrible.

As for the keyboard, you cant look at it as a positive since its so bad. I dont think its a matter of opinion. You would be hard pressed to find anybody that likes it.

I don't know how anyone can say the keyboard is bad. The keys are spaced out well, slightly rounded and have good travel w/ a noticeable click when pressed.

As for the camera, I can get excellent pictures but sometimes it takes more than one try. Obviously it shouldn't take more than one, but they already announced an update coming on Dec. 11th. This is good in two ways: They're fixing the problem and it shows that they're really on top of things, because the OTA update that's coming is already about 3 pages long.

The keys are tiny and they are not on the standard qwerty grid either. Also, it is very uncomfortable having to stretch over the dpad.

Tiny? I have pretty average sized hands and don't even need to use the tips of my thumbs to press them  My old phone's keys were much smaller... if my nails weren't neatly trimmed it was a problem pressing the right keys :p

Regardless, you still have the portrait and landscape virtual keyboards. I only use the physical one for games...

Again, the portait virtual keyboard is useless. The Droid is narrow. The landscape one isn't very good either.

your friend obviously is a fanboy therefore that article (rant) is biased an lacks objectivity.

Definition of fanboy:
1) Someone that disagrees with you.
2) An insult you can give to someone when you don't feel like arguing your point or you know your arguments are weak.

Yes, you can use gchat on the iPhone. It's built in to beejive IM and a number of other IM clients.

What's important to one person may not matter to another. Personally, I think google nav is fine, but it's funny how everyone ripped on nav that requires a cell signal until google did it, and now it's some killer feature. I mean, I'd take it if it were free, but if I really cared about using my phone as a tbt nav system i'd get an app that has the maps downloaded.

To me, overall ease of use trumps any particular feature. And I tell ya, nothing is easier than an iPhone and a mac together (and if you have mobile me it's just that much better). But it's good there are starting to be better options for people who really need verizon/google voice/whatever the iPhone doesn't have.

This is a VERY interesting read. Thanks OP.

But, I do have to admit, that the Droid is growing on me. My husband got one, and I was playing with his today.. some apps on it run smoother, and I specifically LOVE the NES Emulator with 600 ROM's (which I have on my Jailbroken iphone) but his runs smoother, without a glitch, where on my iPhone I have to silence the volume because the games glitch so bad, the music glitches too.

But, I have a 2g, so that might explain the lag. But I am happy to say that I will have a 3gs in 3 months. But will I be able to Jailbreak?!? Rumor is, that I can not- and my husbands Droid needs no jailbreaking because everything is THERE already. So The Droid being tied into Google is nice, and the camera is really good and Verizons 3g Network is awesome and I do get better service with Verizon Hands down but the real keyboard, I am not a fan of, and cases that fit the phone make the slide out keyboard hard, it felt like it was gonna break the phone, so hubby is taking the case back.. notice you never have THAT kind of a problem on the iPhone :). IDK, I am kinda on the fence about this one. Though I could never sell my iPhone for a Droid, I am considering on getting one soon for my Verizon line.

Great post none the less. :)

How many units have they replaced because the ribbons that transfer infromation from the keyboard to the screen have worn our under heavy usage

fix the typo

multitasking would be nice. for example being able to listen to pandora running in the background while texting or using iFitness at the gym. besides that one issue tho i have not had any need for multitasking. but i believe any music apps should be able to run in the background.

aside from those 2 issues, nice article. not much to complain about on the iphone. it's by far the best smartphone on the market.

I beg to differ about the Droid camera. It is really bad. Perhaps I will post some comparative shots between the droid and 3GS. I might try loading some of these emulators today on my Droid. I still would much rather play game like Command and Conquer, Doom Ressurection, and Madden on my iPhone.

I think the Droid is an ok device. I like the promise the platform holds. Its just not anyway close to being on the same level now as the iPhone.

Well the camera is good in some aspects, and much better than my 2g camera, but you have to be VERY still to take pics, that is the main thing that bothers me. I found a link to get 630+ ROMS for the NES Emulator. They play PERFECT on the Droid, I love it! I am hoping that when I get my 3gs it can be Jailbroken and I can get the Emulator on it too. if you want the link to the ROMS lemme know :)
