I think this is the case. Just because apple.com shows that it's not available for pick up doesn't necessarily mean that they don't have any in stock. They do in fact have stock available for walk-in's and these are hidden from apple.com
I had a feeling they may be doing this. Frustrating beyond belief.

I can confirm that! The Apple Store here in Cupertino told me that they have a special stock for walk-ins.

Does walking in = reserve a shopping session? Because my stores don’t allow “walkins”

At least here it totally depends on the employee that you are asking.
Usually in this store (Visitor Center Cupertino) they reserve the iPhone for you and book a shopping session. But some employees just grab the available iPhone from the back and sell it to you without shopping session. I hate waiting so I am always asking another employee if they want to book a session where I have to wait.
(… also I do not need a session…. Just give me the phone and take my money and I am out of the store :) )

How does that work? The last 2 iPhones I bought "at the Apple Store" I was buying unlocked versions on my Apple Card and they would not let me buy them at the store and put it on the Apple Card. I had to order it online in order to use my Apple Card and then pick it up at the store. They said this was only for the unlocked phones. So if any Apple store has any of this "walk-in stock", I can't get one anyway.
I guess it depends on certain apple stores and how they handle it. Likely due to the pandemic we are still going through.

So this is really interesting as I pre ordered immediately when they opened and it turned out that I couldn’t make the appointment on release day, so I phone my local store the day before to ask what could be done and was told not to worry as they would 100% keep my order for 14 days, so that was good, except when I was able to get along finally to the store, I was told they 100% don’t hold them and it was released back into stock and was gone and that if I still wanted one then I could order one and wait till November, so that’s nice.
Well not sure what they told you but if you were to go to apple.com and saw one that is available for pick up in-store, you’d check out and order it online for pick up. What happens is the store receives your order, the pick up label sticker is printed and they pull the phone and attach the pick up sticker and set it on the pick up cart. So they do hold online orders. They don’t hold walk in reservations.

damn there’s legit been no stock today in the dmv area
I’ve read that historically stores do not receive inventory shipments on sundays or mondays, so any phone that shows up in stock is usually a device that was sold but never picked up and therefore a one off.

Fingers crossed there is better luck today.

Makes sense. Hopefully we start to see some inventory trickle through as I am starting to get nervous with the 10/8 deadline to return my launch day unit fast approaching.

Did you buy your phone outright? IUP?

I guess this only works on sim-free or purchased outright and if purchased through apple.com. You technically have 28 days if it's an online order. Only caveat is you have to initiate the return on Day 14. So on 10/8/21, you go to your online order status and for that order initiate the return. You will get an e-mail with the shipping label and when it needs to be received by. It should say 10/22/2021. As long as Apple receives it by 10/22/2021, you will get a full refund. Hopefully that will give you enough time to search for the one you want.

I bought this one I am planning to return through Apple (AT&T next) but when I find one I am just going to buy it outright I think. That's true as long as you initiate the return by the deadline it buys you some more time. Our return center here in PA only takes one day transit to be received so could almost wait until 10/20 to play it safe to send it.

Since my line is currently active with the AT&T installment plan (wont revert back until actually returned), I guess the "Connect on your own later" option is the one I want for later activating it on AT&T correct?

Yes. That's the one you want to get. You can still choose the carrier model and pay outright and activate later (it's essentially the same as buying sim-free), might as well just buy the sim-free model. All you do is insert your sim-card.

Btw. Those in Chicagoland, Apple Lincoln Park has 256 GB Pro Graphite in stock. gotta make it quick. lol

I'm in the UK and managed to find (sim free) stock at other retailers like John Lewis, Argos and Currys - you just have to check their websites regularly as they seem to get stock deliveries. Picking up mine tomorrow.

As for the US - are Apple themselves the only company selling? From reading the replies on here it seems like everyone just wants to buy from Apple directly, do you not have other retailers selling stock from their stores?

There's Best Buy, Target, Walmart, Carrier Stores. I find it a lot easier and my preference is always to buy apple product at the Apple Store and not somewhere else.

do you know what’s the best time to check? haven’t seen anything today so far

I'd say just continue to check through out the day. It's hard to say when a store will pop up with in-store pick up availability. They come and go pretty quick too. Sometimes they even update late at night.

What color/ configuration are you looking for? I lucked out last Wednesday at 8pm. Carnegie Library and Tysons got a lot then it seemed. I can help you check.
wow thank you 🥺 13 pro sierra blue 128/256 gb. been checking like crazy since friday and i’m ready to just give up and order online 😓

Its definitely something you need to be persistent on when checking for pickup. When they do pop up, they only last a few minutes so if your not on top of it they are gone. Stores get their deliveries at different times, so its pretty much checking constantly throughout the day.

Finding a silver 1TB Pro Max at my 12 nearest Apple stores seems to be impossible. Been looking since last Saturday and I believe I’ve now seen every color and storage configuration except the silver 1TB. Closest Apple store is an hour and 15 minute drive but I do wonder if they have walk in stock as my nearest store has never had online stock since I’ve started checking. And I use automator on Mac to refresh the page for me every few seconds so I pretty much see all the restocks throughout the entire day.

I just hate to make that drive to waste my time. But can’t imagine the store hasn’t gotten a single model at all.

Thanks for the hope.. I'm also checking Carnegie daily every few hours. I never would have thought 8PM would be a restock time. Guess you really do need to check throughout the day.
