You don't need the Pencil to do those tasks, that's what your finger is for. Plus it saves the Pencil's battery life. What do you do with a pencil? You write with it. It doesn't have any other function. The Apple Pencil is not a stylus.
It is on 9.2...you should use it how you want to use it.

If they didn't want you to use it as such don't roll it out being able to do it. Alot like using it as a stylus.

Why not? I can do it now. It works. It is better than switching back and forth between touch and pencil. So... why couldn't it be a "stylus" to use it to navigate iOS? Just cause Apple doesn't like the term "stylus"? Lol who cares. It is basically a stylus just named Pencil. That's the only difference.

Isn't this Apple purpose.. To be everyone so exited about something, only to shatter their dreams by removing what u can accomplish with it ?

They probably thought, a finger can do all that. pencil is more about being precise. The only half way point would be "selecting" text.... some fingers are too fat though, so a pencil would be perfect for that.. Obviously not on Apple's raider.
What would be the point of a purpose like that?

Well, if they didn't mean it to work like that but it got released like that, it would make it a design "bug" in a sense that they would then "fix".

A $1,000 tablet can't use the stylus to navigate? Even worse is that it obviously can and the feature is being held back. Let's hope they enable it as they ought to.

Agreed. I don't have an iPad Pro but I was hoping the Air 3 would support the pencil. If it does, I would really want this feature on my new iPad.

Unlike most people complaining here, I actually use the Apple Pencil daily. And speaking from a few months experience I welcome this.

Example: when using Notability for writing down notes with the Pencil I almost always just finger flick to scroll down the page, but instead of scrolling I get a line drawn across my sheet. I instead have to use a two-finger swipe. Annoying. I intuitively expect the app to act like an analogue notepad where my pencil writes and my finger moves pages around. Should be that simple. But right now it's not.

On Procreate I changed the settings so that Finger Mode is for gestures only. This makes a HUGE difference in predictable behavior because there's no need for Palm Rejection to mistake occasional hand rests for pencil strokes.

I suppose for the complainers here Apple could make this a system toggle, but I fear that may limit future UI development because the Pencil will still have to double as a finger replacement instead of focusing on on its core purpose.

iPad is NOT a traditional PC Tablet like a Surface or Wacom - its OS is finger-based and not stylus based. So focusing what the Apple Pencil can do makes perfect sense.

You are using your stylus wrong. Hopefully, good guy Tim will show you the right way. And you will love it.

Just wait until tons of people start going to the Apple Store complaining their pencil stopped working in 9.3

This is exactly what will happen. Apple Store people better be ready if 9.3 officially lands without full Pencil support.

One of the reason why I bought the iPad Pro and Apple Pencil was because I could select text and annotate PDFs. I'm in grad school, so I work extensively with PDFs. I am quite miffed over this.

Thank you Apple. I always thought Pencil did lot more than what it is supposed to. Now it looks perfect. If you just limit its feature set to drawing, that would appropriate. After all it's a pencil that's supposed to be used for drawing. You should make stylus to perform all other functions on iPad pro and sell it for $199.
We forgive you for the mistake.

You have been using the pencil in a non Apple approved way. You should praise Apple for putting you on right track instead of complaining. Remember that every decision Apple makes is for your own good, even if you don't know it.

1,000 dollars, no access to the file system, no expandable memory, no usb port, no display port, and now no more navigation with the pencil? Happier every day that I passed up the Pro for a Surface.

That's not Apple's call to make AFTER they've introduced functionality. That would have been/should have been something from the get-go. I don't think this is the reason.

It's a strange deal. They never mentioned this function when it originally came out, I found it just messing around.

Wonder what is up.

Over the course of the iOS 9.3 beta testing period, iPad Pro users running the update have noticed a disturbing feature removal that limits the functionality of the Apple Pencil. In the current version of iOS, iOS 9.2, the Apple Pencil can be used for navigational purposes, just like a finger. It's possible to tap on buttons, select text, scroll, swipe between apps, access menus, and access general editing controls in non-drawing apps.

With iOS 9.3, much of that functionality has been removed. The Apple Pencil is no longer able to be used for selecting and manipulating text or doing things like scrolling -- it's only available for selecting buttons and drawing, sketching, and writing within apps.

Early on, Apple Pencil users thought the feature removal was perhaps a bug, but full Apple Pencil functionality has not been restored in later betas and the release notes that accompany betas have never mentioned the Apple Pencil's inability to be used for navigational purposes as a known issue. In a recent podcast, Relay.fm co-founder Myke Hurley said he's heard that the decision isn't a bug, but an intentional design decision.Earlier today, iMore's Serenity Caldwell wrote an opinion piece outlining the issue and calling on Apple not to remove the Apple Pencil's existing capabilities. In her post, she points out the Apple Pencil can no longer be used for tasks like editing videos in iMovie for iOS.Many iPad Pro users have come to rely on the Apple Pencil as a finger replacement in some situations, and it is not entirely clear why Apple has opted to eliminate that functionality. iOS 9.3 is expected to be released in the spring, perhaps at Apple's March 15 event, which means the end of the beta testing period is fast approaching. As Caldwell points out, Apple still has time to re-add the Apple Pencil features back into the operating system ahead of that date.

[doublepost=1456189923][/doublepost]Well, that seals the deal for me. Not buying an iPad Pro. Apple is making some very odd decisions that are not in line with the customer experience they wish to personify (and have for a long time, but not any longer).
