This committee-of-celebrities Apple is basically the complete opposite of the Apple that got to where Apple is today.

I give them 7 more years before they are the next Sony/Microsoft. They're about 30% of the way there so far.

In the design world - this is big. You rarely see a world star designer such as Newson join one company. It doesn't get much more famous than him (unless karim rashid or ross lovegrove, or philippe starck - but their design language does not really fit apple.

Luckily there's no salary cap to deal with in business, so why not get the best where ever they are?

there isnt a salary cap in the british premier league either.
the issue is not who's the best right now, it's who's going to continue to be the best in the future.
proven talent have can have lesser potential than new up-and-coming talent, who are often hungrier and potentially have more new ideas.

Oh dear lord. Most people have never heard of this guy and I doubt you had before now either.

But I like how you've bumped the DOOOOMED! prediction timeline to the better part of a decade -- hedge your bet, a little.

This is it. This is the first step in Ive retiring.

He's trying to find an iconic replacement figurehead so Apple still seems to be design driven so he can go back to England and enjoy being unbelievably rich.

2 years or less mark my words!

Well by golly.

"According to the report, Newson will continue to be based in the United Kingdom"

Oh he's from the UK, thank goodness! IF Ive were to retire, I was afraid it meant the end of the British accent intro video at Apple keynotes. The products don't sound as magical without that accent.

I can already hear Marc Newson saying with his accent "In order to create something this remarkable, we had to start from scratch. We built this magical device from the ground up. It is truly the best iPhone yet".

No matter how hungry you are, it's talent that rules at the end of the day. This guy has it. Great choice for a senior hire.

Not surprised that the usuals here are trying to find the gray cloud.

The glamour shot is nice and all, but I can't see this "combo" to ever work out - two rock star designers on the same team spells out ego wars.

Unless Ives is eventually leaving, of course.

Well... there goes the Apple I used to know...

Ive was able to work with Steve... and Steve sure had an ego.

Other than Dre (and let's get real that's probably mostly for show), what other celebrities has Apple hired?

Apple has hired some really smart, high-profile people that are at the top of their individual industries like Angela Ahrendts, Paul Deneve, Lisa Jackson, Kevin Lynch, Jimmy Iovine, Ian Rogers, Anand Shimpi, Michael Gartenberg, etc.

And you know why they hired them? Because they're Apple. Most of those people probably wouldn't have left their cushy other jobs to work anywhere else.

Only Apple could get top CEOs, CTOs, COOs and a former vice president of the United States to come work for it.

The talent pool at Apple has expanded dramatically since the death of Steve Jobs. There was noone else like Steve Jobs. It's going to take a village to replace his insight, creativity, drive and intuition. That's what Cook is doing. Setting Apple up for years to come.
