The glamour shot is nice and all, but I can't see this "combo" to ever work out - two rock star designers on the same team spells out ego wars.

Unless Ives is eventually leaving, of course.

I don't think so. Marc and Jony have, in the past, done some incredible things together - they're also both good friends. I think they'll compliment each other well. Will be fascinating to see this partnership come to fruition

Geez. Apple is going all Manchester United lately.
less faith in internally grown talent, big cash on outside, already peaking talent.

Man Utd still has far more homegrown talent than any of the other top English clubs.

And Apple shouldn't keep around any Tom Cleverleys or Danny Welbecks in their ID group, either. The game is far too competitive to keep average talent for sentimental reasons.

"According to the report, Newson will continue to be based in the United Kingdom"

Oh he's from the UK, thank goodness! IF Ive were to retire, I was afraid it meant the end of the British accent intro video at Apple keynotes. The products don't sound as magical without that accent.

I can already hear Marc Newson saying with his accent "In order to create something this remarkable, we had to start from scratch. We built this magical device from the ground up. It is truly the best iPhone yet".

You'll have to recalibrate your imagination because he's Australian. :)

Isn't it about time to drop the too cool for the room hipster poses of Ive (and now with his new "partner"? It's gotten quite old.

Fresh blood to the design mix at Apple will be nice, I think. We could use more products like gold Earpods and a bright red Mac Pro.

This guy's a genius. Pentax hired him to design their camera and he came up with this brick...

I like it.

I love Marc Newson and this is the best news this year, but Apple needs to hire better and more UI and UX designers. I never really saw a problem with their industrial design.

Ghastly, glitzy rubbish. The very sort of empty surface-oriented fashionable crap that would appeal to Vanity Fair or Bono.

Since the iOS disaster, Jony looks increasingly lost without Jobs to tell him when he sucks. He needs his worst instincts curbed and his best instincts honed. Clearly, the Howdy-Doody Tim Cook isn't the person to do it.

You mad bro? :D

No he's Australian but lives in the UK as he's married to a British fashion designer who works for Fendi.

This is it. This is the first step in Ive retiring.

He's trying to find an iconic replacement figurehead so Apple still seems to be design driven so he can go back to England and enjoy being unbelievably rich.

2 years or less mark my words!

It has me a bit concerned. The Pentax K-1 (designed by Marc Newson) used a downright horrible design, and was laughed at in many photography circles. If you're right, it is incredibly important that he truly understands the Apple design language. It's worrying since great designers want to set their mark. They don't want to follow. And I'm unsure if I like his mark. He's made some great designs, that's for sure, but does it suit Apple's design language and philosophy? Now that is the question. At least as important as being a great designer, is being a suitable designer.

What if he helped design the iWatch since he made watches before? And they didn't want to announce his position to not spoil the iWatch rumors?

I am not so sure. Marc Newson has designed a lot of watches and Apple could just have him focus on designing wearable products. Apple might want to come out with a whole line of watches rather than just one. I mean, tens of millions of people all wearing the same watch might not go over very well.

This could just be a sign that Apple recognizes that their one model a year approach to phones isn't going to cut it in the wearables world. Having someone focus on wearables will free Ive up to work on the other Apple products.

Um, that's not the only thing he ever designed you know. Plus it's not like Apple (even under Steve) didn't have design clunkers once in a while. Fat Nano anyone?

He has of course designed other gear, but what stands out to me is that they do not follow a minimalist aesthetic. They rather seem to focus on robustness, not shying away from even looking a bit fat. How that idea will be merged with the ultra slim designs Apple stand for, I have no idea. I of course hope that this won't be a turn for the worse!

Edit: I can see one plane Ive and Newson meet at: Both seem to be excellent industrial designers. Both styles seems to show confidence. But I strongly think they are not the same styles. Not even close.

The 'iOS disaster'?... oh please... get over yourself.

Yeah, I don't get it either. I was skeptical at first but I've grown to love ios7. It's modern, refreshing, bright and airy. There's a reason why Google copied it. Whenever I see an app that still uses the pre iOS 7 keyboard, I'm like ugh, that thing looks really dated.

Apple has been doing a terrific job with hiring lately.

Based on what? They have spent a lot of money but only time will tell if that money was wisely spent.

$3 billion on the new campus, many millions on hiring the new retail head (so she can do what?).

It is easy to spend the dollars - lets see what all these new hires deliver before praising the hiring.

Yyyyyeah, no. It's for "internet" from the first iMac. Could be wrong, but pretty sure it wasn't Bono.

You're not wrong. When we all saw the Bondy Blue, before the world release, Steve coined the phrase iMac for Interconnected Mac and specifically associated with the Internet.
