".....An applause welcomed the regal procession. Everyone wanted to know how stupid or incompetent his or her neighbour was but, as the Emperor passed, a strange murmur rose from the crowd.

Everyone said, loud enough for the others to hear: "Look at the Emperor's new clothes. They're beautiful!" "What a marvellous train!" "And the colours! The colours of that beautiful fabric! I have never seen anything like it in my life!"

They all tried to conceal their disappointment at not being able to see the clothes, and since nobody was willing to admit his own stupidity and incompetence, they all behaved as the two scoundrels had predicted....."

So when do we get a matte screen iMac so I can replace my 5 year old Pentium D Windows XP machine and finally step into Mac?

That is a great question and one that I hope they will answer. 20+ inches of pure gloss is just a pain on the eyes.

how utterly charming and novel..

Just stumbled upon an in-depth comparison of the new models against the prior models. It details all the key specs in an easy-to-read table. Here's what's compared:

Model
Price
Processor Type
Processor Speed Standard
Processor Speed Optional
System Bus
Cache Shared
Hard Drive
Optional SSD
Memory (RAM) standard
Memory (RAM) max

When looking at the 13" MBP's especially if their using C2D's that are not offering much better than the 2.4Ghz 8600 that my uMB_AL of 2008 is using ... then this quote is VERY fitting. I'm extremely happy with my MB and I may just upgrade later in this year ... just to get a little more performance down the road should the next Big Cat of OS gets released depending on more power from the GPU via OpenGL.

how about a 13" anti-glare??

I do feel for those who wanted the 1440x900 matte and waited for the update.

I fail to understand why apple continues to NOT offer the anti-glare option for the 13". I am a pre-unibody matte MBP owner, and I just won't buy one of those glossy glass screens. But I do want to have a smaller, lighter laptop. And I would be willing to pay for it, but Apple doesn't even offer any 13" laptop with an anti-glare/matte option. That is disappointing. And it doesn't make business sense if consumers are willing to add it as an option. What gives, Steve-o?

As SeenJeen pointed out,the large price difference between the 13" and the 15" is Apple's way of communicating that they perceive the 15" as being head and tails above the 13".

I totally support Apple having a reasonably priced 13", but I also think there should be a premium version (for approx $1500 or so) that is clearly as good as the Sony Z, spec wise.

I wish there had been a simultaneous refresh of the Air, as well, because if the base version had had a huge bump in specs, I would probably buy it due to its being so lightweight. I think one reason a lot of ppl (including me) are drawn to the Z is that fact that it weighs 1/3 less than the Z. Regardless, I think I will side with the MBP's battery life.

I'm actually considering that option... and aftermarket drive would be cheaper... however...would that void an applecare warranty? And how easy is installing ur own hard drive? I know its only like 1 cable connection but the concern is the space in the unibody and disassembling the unibody. Is it an easy diy?

This is a source of a lot of debate. I think technically it does void the warranty, but at the same time Apple doesn't really enforce it. I guess it's a risk you take. It is not hard to replace the drive, there are guides on ifixit.com

If you aren't comfortable replacing the drive yourself or are weary of voiding the warranty I'd just pay the extra $150.

You sound like you aren't sure about 5400 vs 7200 and aren't worried as much about capacity. Unless you are doing lots of file transfers or using your hard drive heavily you probably won't notice too much difference. I upgraded to a 7200 rpm drive from my original 5400 and didn't notice a substantial difference. Maybe just a little more snappy.

I'd like to think that I'm a very objective person.

But the fact of the matter is, Apple sticking with the Core 2 Duo is indefensible. It's your money, please waste it as how you like, but not upgrading the processor for the 13" is a slap in the face. It'll probably sell like hotcakes and i don't think anybody cares about the extra power, but it's still a slap in the face. an upgraded graphics card, more RAM? That's just part of technology, they're merely "moving with it" instead of offering you something more. I think Apple fanboys are truly blind and I have never felt so bad for a group of fanboys in my life.

Oh also, It's sad that there's no resolution bump, but I realize that is probably very very farfetchd so that's fine. this is why anybody who gives a **** about computers don't buy mac. not because of how expensive it is. i'd spend the money if i felt like apple cared enough to not slap me around whenever there's a refresh.

that said, 15" seems to be the good buy. My only guess is that the i3 is backordered so maybe if we wait a couple of months, it'd be upgraded.

Your comment is wrong in so many ways.

Not that I don’t agree with you, but can’t you use an external drive to rip a Bluray disc into a standard movie file? There are for sure Windows utilities that do it, but I feel like I’ve seen some Mac software being developed to do this as well.

I could do that, but mostly I just want to be able to pop a blu-ray in my computer and watch a movie if I wanted to. Most of my movies are blurays now. Bluray files are massive and I'm not interested in archiving them so ripping them isn't really what I want. We use blurays as one form of backup (out of many) at my workplace as well so it would be nice to be able to access those while on the go. No big deal, but it would just be more handy if a bluray drive was an option. That would get me to upgrade, but I'll just hold onto my 3 yr old macbook pro for a while longer.

I get that. I guess if I did have BluRay movies I’d probably be pining for a drive. But so far I’ve gotten my HD fix from alternative sources…

It's not just you. Every sane person is missing (will be missing shortly) not only USB3 but also
- esata (which can be combined with a USB slot, hence no extra slot is needed)
- express card slot with 13" and 15" inch models (put an express card SD reader in it, if you wish to use that. If you don't wish that, put in something else you need - a hard drive, 3G modem, ...)
- bluray
- how about upgrading FW800 to FW3200 (the standard exists from 12/2006) (by the way, there is an FW version that uses rj45 (i.e. ethernet) connectors, thus could be used as a combined ethernet/FW port e.g. for MBAir)
- well, I guess that would be enough for the start :)

i have a question, if a have 2gb of ddr2RAM from my old macbook pro, can i add them to one of the new macbook pros?

you're right. I was concerned about getting locked out of brand new tech, but your're right, there are many techs already on the market that should be implemented on the "pro" line

You just do not get this whole Apple thing. You are supposed to miss only what Steve told you to miss. Watch for his e-mail replies widely reported on this forum and act accordingly. Watch his presentations (live) and learn what you shoudl and should not miss. At this moment you are not supposed to miss USB 3, SD XC slots, HDMI ports, BluRay, RGB LED backlit screens, quad core CPUs and a lot of other stuff (but you get the idea).

In-store availability

Hey everyone!

Does anyone have any historical info on how long it takes for the new models to show up in the physical Apple stores? I called right when they opened today but they had no clue, sounded like they just found out about them at the same time we did.

I know they're available online right away, but I live 4 blocks from an Apple store and feel silly having it shipped when I'm so close!

Thanks!
-Sean

posting this reply from my new 13" mbp...just got it tonight with the new updates. Somehow my local store had them...doesnt appear that the other stores have them. Hopefully my first Mac is a good experience

Oh everything SUCKS! The C2D in the 13 inch SUCKS! Nevermind the ten hour battery life IT JUST SUCKS ANYWAY! What's up with the graphics card? SUCKS SUCKS SUCKS!!!!!!

I mean the C2D processors are WORTHLESS! Apple should bring back the processor that was in the Apple II whatever that was BECAUSE IT'S BETTER THAN THE C2Ds!

Are you having a bad day people or what?

What did you expect the 13 inch to have anyway? Ten i7 processors that would break the 10GHz mark? 500TB hard drive and 50GB of RAM?

Get a grip people! Can't you have two inches more of screen and spend $600 more to get a nice i5 15 inch? Since you're SO FREAKED OUT about the lack of power in the new 13 inch has.

BTW, I really want to know what are you doing on your computer that the new 13 inch can't handle?

As a first time buyer, I'm going to place an order next week, but have been shopping around at MacMall and MacConnection to see if they have rebates. I noticed though there was no option to configure the MacBook at these stores. Are you only able to configure a MacBook at the Apple Store then?
