It is a threat and a rather extreme case because the data can be used against a population in the future, either as targeted blackmail or wider suppression. The only solution is to buy it and regulate the data, or ban it.

Everything TikTok is "collecting" is the same that Facebook is collecting, actually it has been shown Facebook is collecting more. And the American government would not hesitate to use any data it can get it's hands on against the American people. Maybe Americans should be more worried about their own government than the Chinese government.

Am trying to download all my information from Facebook so I can have a record of everything (some funny, good times, good jokes, etc on there) and then close / cancel and delete the account - and eventually instagram as well. We'll see if it works this time. Last few times the archive was corrupted and wouldn't open. Typical sketchy ass facebook.

And why no one in privacy world watch dogs, government agencies looking into it ?

These companies all suck! I don’t use social media for the most part. And it’s obvious to me that until they quit abusing their tech to take advantage of users, it will never make sense.

For many people, social media is the opioid of internet addiction. They have to constantly feed their eyes and mind with a lot of useless drivel that gives them the dopamine high they crave.
Does that make MacRumors the methadone of the Internet?

Closing your FB account while using Instagram is like putting a band-aid on femoral laceration.
I’m sure the privacy violations are equally horrible on both services. But Facebook has become a toxic cesspool of ignorant political posts and stupid memes. On Instagram, I still enjoy looking at my friend’s pictures. I’m sure that will degrade over time as well.

I respect your choice even though I don’t agree with it for obvious reasons. :)

How does this help someone without an account? Does my using a containerized browser prevent them from pulling data from my friends pictures? Don’t they also pull data from non-Facebook products?
Not using their products unfortunately is not enough. Practically every site you visit nowadays uses facebook tracking.
Just preaching my opinion that killing Facebook would be a good thing, and that there’s only one way to do it.

Guys, China is not a dictatorship, please realize it's geopolitics at play, and China has been demonized for a long time. If Instagram is owned by a Chinese company, the write up of these kinds of stories will be about Chinese government ties, CCP spying on Americans, nevermind the world, and nevermind that Facebook already does that, does the NSA have access?

Not surprising to anybody though is it? Instagram was a lot more fun before fb bought it.

but...but...I thought we were banning TikTok because they are the evil ones from our evil common enemy China

At this point, if you're still using FB services that's on you.

Most people are unaware of what goes in the background, for example they think that a "private" conversation is really private they don't think any one on Instagram/FB can look at it. Even I, a privacy advocate, was horrified to learn the lengths they will go in collecting data...its pure evil. Your computer monitor size, they keys you press, your cursor movement, date stamp on the links you clicked...I heard Google has a database of wifi routers locations around the world, they do it by collecting MAC address or something like that.

The first lawsuit settlement is a joke. They'll earn the difference in a few days. Any fines against Facebook needs to be in the BILLIONS, not millions.

the best fine you can give to FB is preaching people to stop using their services and advocating and supporting the alternatives. I am still waiting for someone to create an Instagram alternative. Like YouTube, its one of its kind. There are many Gmail, Chrome, Whatsapp...etc alternatives but not YouTube or Instagram.

carrying a GPS device with a camera and microphone always pointing at your face with access to all your messages thoughts and ideas might have privacy concerns

Carrying a device that can be tracked at all might create privacy concerns. It's been shown in the past that bounty hunters and others were getting someone's location through nefarious means and telecom companies for relatively little $. Could just be based off your phone pinging off nearby towers to give a approximate location.

But Tiktok is owned by a dictatorial communist regime and government that suppresses the rights and freedoms of individuals. So there-in lies the difference.

And Facebook is primarily operated by a sociopath with an ego the size of the planet. Not sure how much difference there really is, considering Facebook is constantly found doing sketchy and/or illegal things...yet it keeps happening, so clearly nothing is really being done about it. Nothing is stopping them from playing nice with this "dictatorial communist regime and government" you reference either. They already did very little to protect 87 million users data from being harvested (or deleted) by Cambridge Analytica.

God, I wish I could get rid of WhatsApp but 3rd world countries and their crappy MMS implementations made WhatsApp the defacto messaging app here.
