It IS a problem in developing countries, where Facebook offers “free” access to their platform. Many many people thinks that Facebook IS the internet, thus all these fake accounts and hoaxes easily spread hate and extremism in a society that is not ready in their critical thinking being exposed to Facebook “internet.” And Facebook makes zero effort in curbing these obvious fake accounts since they created the “engagement” that Facebook is looking for (in terms of numbers).

Just developing countries? America has a president that’s told over 5,000 lies (and counting) according to the Washington Post and many of his supporters believe them. FB had nothing to do with that. Just as you can’t control what’s on the internet (unless you live in a country without freedom of speech), it’s hard to blame FB for the lies and misinformation that are spread by bad actors. You don’t need fake accounts to do that.

There are over 2B people on the platform... they’re sharing texts, articles, images and videos every day. And if FB was more aggressive in censoring what people said/saw, you know as well as I that they’d be investigated for violating freedom of speech rights.

Can FB accelerate spread of information? Probably. But that’s not any different than the trend we’ve been seeing with tech for the last century. I think the real problem here is the same one Apple faced a couple of years ago... FB just got too big and popular and now it’s become fashionable to hate on them. But just like with Apple, I think this issue will fade and the media and the public will set their sites on a new target.

They hold the record for the largest one-day stock loss in history, when they lost $118B after a bad earnings call earlier this year. Their popularity is declining with the younger age brackets as well. They aren’t dead, but I would call that declining.

Even though they lost huge amount of money, there isn’t any other company out there that can match the services they provide, and until there is a proper alternative they’ll always be number 1.
