How did your install go?

How could I do that? I have an up to date time machine, but I can't do anything since I am stuck at the login screen.

Also if this was a clean install, wouldn't I have been prompted to create a new account at some point in the process?

How can I restore a time machine backup without logging in?

I think my account data is still somewhere because it is connected to my wi-fi network and I was not asked for my network key at any point.
There maybe a much easier solution than this. The only thing I know to suggest would be booting from the Lion disk, installing and then choosing the restore from time machine option.

OR, you could try the repair partition that Lion installed. It has a new ability to reset user accounts and passwords. That would be an easier solution, if it works.

I tried upgrading to lion through the app store, it didn't work and asked me to restart. Now all I get it a blinking apple logo, a blinking error logo and a blinking hard drive logo with a question Mark on it. I booted from a CD and I'm currently in disk utility. It recognises the disk but the macintosh HD part is greyed out and it cannot repair it. It shows an error "keys out of order" when repairing.

Nothing was wrong before hand so i have no idea whats happening and really need help fast.

Luckily I've backed up all photos and important documents which I need although i would like to have everything intact.

So I beg of you guys to help me! Thanks in advance.

Restart and hold down Command+R and see if the Lion recovery/utilities shows up. If so, you can try to re-install it through that. Lion creates a small partition just for recovery in instances like this.

"Accessing recovery mode

You can access recovery mode only when your Mac starts up, although there are two ways to do so:

The easier way On newer Macs, you can access recovery mode by simply restarting or starting up the Mac and immediately holding down Command+R. Keep holding these keys until you see the Apple logo on the screen. After a few seconds, you'll see a window with Mac OS X Utilities in large text across the top. If this procedure doesn't work for you, try the second method.

The alternate way On any Mac, you can access recovery mode using OS X's Startup Manager:

1.Restart or start up your Mac and immediately hold down the Option key; keep holding Option until the Startup Manager--a gray screen showing all connected, bootable volumes--appears. One of the volumes will be called Recovery HD.

2. If you'll want to connect to your local network (for example, to access backups on a Time Capsule) or the Internet in recovery mode (see "Using recovery mode," below), you can use the pop-up menu at the bottom of the screen to choose a local Wi-Fi network; provide the network's password when prompted. (If you prefer, you can wait until you're booted into recovery mode to choose a network.)

3. Select Recovery HD and then click the upward-pointing arrow below it to boot from Recovery HD. After a brief delay, you'll see the new Mac OS X Utilities screen."

In a case like this you've got an error with your hard drive. You'll need to repartition and reformat it to correct this. Before you do this, you'd want to make sure your backups are good because once you've repartitioned all the data on your drive will be gone. Forever.

Just boot from the install disk and use Disk Utility to repartition the disk. You should be able to proceed normally then.

Under SL, if I had nothing running I would have about 57 process running. Now under Lion, I have nothing running and there are 80 processes eating up resources. Don't know whats going on here... maybe just caching.
I wouldn't sweat it. There's some extra activity due to the indexing and other processes that run when you first install. Mine is sitting at 102 processes right now but the performance is great.

Generally, one makes backups before one starts a system upgrade. If you haven't not done so yet, your data will be at risk of loss.

I backed up everything important but just wondered if there was anything I could do to back up everything. No big loss if I can't.

I downloaded and installed OS X Lion. Once the App store download ended and I was prompted to restart I went to read a book. When I came back my computer was on the Lion login screen, but the only option I have is a guest account to which I do not have the password. My account is gone from the login screen. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have an appointment at the Genius Bar tomorrow but would rather be able to solve the problem myself.

I have the same problem can you let me know what you find out?

What is this I don't even

stuck... not a com guy, but I'm stuck with "The application could not be downloaded. Check your internet connection and try again." received this message 3 times now when it get's to about 80-90% internet is working great and I've for sure paid for the app. all my com specs show I'm good to go to download it. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Mine had been going fine, download took a while to get going but finished in a reasonable amount of time, then the installer got to the end of the progress bar and got stuck... Now under the bar it says:

Time remaining: About -22 minutes

What is this? Can anyone help?

EDIT: Not sure what the problem was but when I tried pressing exit my iMac froze (beach ball) so I turned it off by holding the power button (I know, but it had been stuck for a while at this point). It took a couple tries pressing the power button to get it to turn on again but when it did it went straight back to Lion install and completed without a problem.

Lesolar,
I just restored my system from a time machine backup. I was able to get into the guest user by resetting the password with an OS10.6 disk utility but I found no way of getting back my account or getting into the admin. I'll just wait until I an updated version of lion comes out and try again.

DustinT, thanks for all the help!

yeah i actually installed ubuntu on another partition... guess i should delete it then
I'm glad to help. I'd recommend you try removing Ubuntu and see how that works. If you still have similar issues I'd recommend you perform a clean installation of Lion to make sure you have your partitions set as Apple indicates. Problems like these have a way of reappearing later when you least expect them, in my experience. Its better to put an end to them now, forever.

Well still a black monitor. Light is on though on my mini. It's been a long time. Any suggestions? What would happen if I turn the power off and back on?
Reports have come in that indicate up to two hours maybe needed on systems with limited resources. If you haven't waited that long you probably should.

I created a usb boot drive so that i could clean install, restarted and my mac couldn't recognise the drive, so just did the upgrade over SL. Once lion was installed i tried again, and now the option key no longer works on startup.

Install Problem With Recovery Partition

It says it can not install it. and sends me to apple.com/support/no-recovery

So, as the webpage you linked to states, you apparently have an unusual setup on your hard drive. Are you going to use Disk Utility to repartition it or just continue without the recovery partition?

So, it looks like about 20% of responders in this thread show some complete failure of the installation process in Lion. I guess the squeaky wheel does hope to get some grease.:)

I had to wipe my drive, clean install, then it crashed, then I wiped again, used SL disk, installed sl, downloaded lion worked like a charm. All without a backup :(
