My camera's 720p footage appears in the "Events" pane in the iPad photo app. I figure iMovie would probably work for that footage (despite not having cameras on my iPad 1).

Unfortunately, Windows 7 64 tells me that I already have the iPod Config Utility installed, even though I don't. I can't install iMovie from my Wndows machine.

Luckily, I'm buying an iMac when they refresh, so it appears that this procedure will work for me then.

Is there an ETA on that?

Also, the built-in cameras on the iPad 2 are totally crap according to the reviews. So you'd probably prefer to record them on something else if possible. That would also prevent looking like a total tool recording video with your tablet :)

Edit: Serious, video recording with a 10" tablet??? Reminds me of this (Picture courtesy of Wired):

Hey, I had one of those! (I got it specifically because it was the cheapest phone I could find that could sync with OS X via Bluetooth.) Replaced it with my iPhone.

As others have said, it's not about recording video on it, it's about editing video. Between my camera, my iPad, and the camera connection kit, I can edit and publish my video from anywhere, in less weight and space than even a MacBook Air.

Awesome

I bought a helmet camera for skiing a few weeks ago and was pleased to find out the footage would play on my iPad so I didn't need to take my laptop away with me to checkout my recordings before I get home

So when Apple announced iMovie for the iPad I was really pleased, shame they decided to try and block it from the original iPad

<edit>That said, it seems the clips don't show in iMovie. Ah well

Perhaps...

What would be the point of installing iMovie on the iPad with no camera?

I don't know maybe to use the files they can put on the iPad1 from their PC or Mac and work on projects while on the go. If you have a phone, you have means to capture the movies, pics and therefore need to have a camera on the ipad is fluff. You don't really need it, but if you have it great.

I just used the tip to install iMovie on my iPad 1 w/ iOS 4.3. I have an iPhone 3G and I can't upgrade it to 4.3 so I'm at 4.2. I tried the same trick for that and it did not work so is it impossible to install it on a iPhone 3G?

Thanks for the tip! I'm not sure why Apple is imposing this artificial limitation (greed?). iPod Touch 4G runs iMovie and it only has 256mb ram like the iPad.

I'll be installing this later this evening. A nice addition alongside GarageBand for iPad! Talk about an amazing iOS app. By far Apple's best! I can't stop playing with it.

I understand their decision completely! Its used for editing shot video, so why would you put it on a device that can't do that? Even though the hardware is clearly capable, its just not useful. That said, options are nice.

Exactly, and actually while we are on the subject, it is a constant source of frustration for me that the iPhone doesnt work with the camera connection kit as that would be an ideal device for backing up pictures/videos and also doing some minor video editing on the go, but apple(in their wisdom) blocked this so its not possible.....

I have iMovie on my iPhone 4. I really like the app and was really disappointed they didn't have an iPad optimized version before iPad 2 was announced. I bought the cck and prior to upgrading 4.2.1 with the ridiculous downgrade on power to the port, transferred files to iPad via memory card from my Nikon d90 video capable dslr very easily. Of course that has been shot to crap thanks to apple, and now this latest blow to loyal users.

I don't really understand why so many people on this thread are so confused about this...the idea of transferring video TO the iPad.

How can something so cool be so frustrating???

My question is what if we do t upgrade to 4.3? Or even off of 4.2.1????

Any hope for us?

Thanks for any feedback!

I used these instructions to install iMovie on my original iPad 1. It worked perfectly but the problem occurs when I later sync to iTunes. I don't have to sync with iTunes often but I like to do it from time to time since it backs up my iPad.
When I connect to iTunes I get a message that says:

This computer is no longer authorized for apps that are installed on the iPad "*****". Would you like to authorize this computer for items purchased from the iTunes store?
If you do not authorize this computer the app 'iMovie" and its data will be deleted from this iPad.

I have the option to cancel don't authorize or authorize. If I don't authorize iMovie is removed but if I select authorize it gives me the iTunes login screen with my Apple ID filled in and I just have to enter my Password which I do. When I do that I get the message:

This computer is already authorized.
Including this one, you have authorized 2 computers out of your available 5. I select ok.

Then it becomes a loop. I go back to the screen that says my computer is no longer authorized for apps installed on the iPad, etc.

I have iTunes on two mac computers but both are under my one AppleID and both my iPhone 3G and iPad use this same AppleID so I don't think it's an issue with two accounts. I do my purchases through my iPad but in this case did it through the iTunes store but in both cases as far as I know it's the same AppleID.

I finally at a later date simply selected to not authorize and sure enough as it stated it removed iMovie from my iPad and also my iTunes. I was able to download it again for free from the iTunes store though.

I finally simply selected Cancel and it appears that worked. I have tried syncing it a 2nd time also and it still backs up the iPad as soon as I plug it in. From time to time though I sync music or iTunes U files. It appears once I select cancel it basically cancels the sync at the app part before it gets to files such as music, video, photos, and iTunes U. It appears as long as I want to only do a backup of the iPad this way is fine but if I want to change/sync any files such as music, iTunes U, photos, podcasts, movies, etc. I can't do this and have no choice by to authorize, lose iMovie, then redownload imovie to iTunes for free, and then use the iPhone Configuration Utility to add it again.

I just want to find out if what I'm experiencing is normal and if there is a way to add iMovie to the original iPad and not experience this problem everytime I sync to iTunes. I know the easy answer is to buy that new 32GB iPad 2 :) I'm holding off for the iPad 3 though. With just 3.8GB free on a 16GB iPad though I hope the space lasts for another year.

This obstacle has already been discussed on a few places (earlier on this thread, I think), and it seems like the cause is iTunes getting confused that the iPad has an app on it that wasn't loaded via iTunes or the App Store. Right now, nobody has a fix for that...

I have it installed on my iPhone4 and iPad1.
I see why Apple would not allow it on the ipad1.
The user exsperence is not as good as the iPhone4 it's buggy on iPad1 . It crashed a few times and it hangs and on iphone4 i did ot see this.

I have found that most reasons apple does not allow it on old hardware is user experience that is what makes Apple a top notch company .

Finally, a voice of reason!

What would be the point of installing iMovie on the iPad with no camera?

Recording isn't the issue. I want it so I can edit videos captured with my iPhone 4 from my iPad without needing to kill my fingers/eyes/neck in the process.

I thought that was obvious.

It can't load video from SD cards?

Well, that stinks. Even though I don't have the iPad 2 yet, I wouldn't even buy iMovie on one when I get it, if it can't work with video on SD card via the camera connection kit! I just assumed that was an option, especially with cameras like the Rebel T2i saving HD video to SD cards now.

IMO, it's not only artificial, this limitation. What are people supposed to do with iMovie on a device that doesn't record video?

The biggest problem isn't lack of RAM or storage on the original iPad, but the lack of a video camera. I'm sure there would be folks who would like to edit their video on the iPad, given the excellent multi-touch controls, and especially if they don't have a Mac and iMovie that comes with it. But think of the hassle it'll take to get the video material on the iPad. Apple doesn't usually do hassle. So by ruling out the original iPad, they don't get confused people asking how to load their DV etc. files onto iMovie.

Sure they could've added support for loading videos off of video cameras' SD cards with the Camera Connectivity Kit, but would've been more programming.

Pretty simple why you would want iMovie on an ipad even though it has no cameras. I am always uploading video's thru the SD reader onto my ipad which are better quality than my iphone. Editing on the road for fun video's will be great and much easier to do on my existing ipad than on my iphone. Sorry I'm getting older and Bigger screen is way better :D

I've installed it and have had no troubles editing video's taken with my canon G11 & SX30, just fun video's to play with while I'm traveling I will still work on my high res. videos from my 5d on my imac.

still don't get the idea of walking around with a big book and taking pics & video ?? Ok, facetime is cool but hey there are faces I don't want to see that big

still loving my 64gb 3gs ipad 1, yes I can see an upgrade in my future but thank you apple for not raising the bar so high that I had to jump just yet.

Yeah, I truly understand the need. I guess the point is that it's a $5 app, so either they never bring SD card video import support, or then it's with an update, or something like Final Cut for iPad. Just a thought. The biggest job is ensuring compatibility with different video cameras and their different video codecs and sizes... Not something that can not be overcome, though.

any ideas?

thank you all for your time,, here is my setup & situation,
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit edition, iOS 4.3, iTunes 10.1.2.17 ,

I was able to download iMovie via iTunes, Windows 7 iTunes Default Location is at C:\Users\'Your User Folder'\Music\'iTunes'\iTunes Media\Mobile Applications , the iMovie file was iMovie 120.ipa , I copied the iMovie file onto my desktop, with iTunes still running, I ran the iPhone Configuration Utility ...
I selected my profile, was able to "Add to Library" the iMovie 120.ipa file on my desktop, it added the file, when I select My Device, Applications, and Click on Install for iMovie, I get this error message, "Could not install application on device. Error: kAMDReceiveMessageError"

How may I remedy this situation?

... on a side note, I noticed some individuals had mentioned that iMovie on an iPad1 was useless without a camera:p .. Though I can see how others may think that, all of my videos (a huge library) are in a Picasa (picasaweb.google.com) location, and I use a simple App called "Web Albums for iPad - A Picasa Photo Viewer, Uploader, and Manager" <currently 2.99 in the App Store> this Application allows me to download anything I want from Picasa into my iPad, all my thousands of photos/movies download right from the APP into my media library.... And, Personally, (IMHO):apple: since the iPad 2's Back Camera is less a less than 1.2 Megapixel HD(ish) 720P , I would't use the Ipad2 rear camera to capture special moments, I'll stick with my Sony HDR-TG5V for capturing video....

<(oO)>

I guess for me, who is really shooting videos longer than 5 minutes (regardless if you’re shooting it via the iPad 2/iPhone/iPod Touch)? The iPad in general is just for editing short video clips (3-6 minutes in length…not feature length films…maybe on the iPad 2020). But I keep reading iMovie on the 1st gen is not capable and it will crash, but I think it would crash on the iPad 2 even with its processing and memory power (read one person’s opinion review here). Again…it’s for editing short videos.

So I decided to do my own test. I recently shot a 30 minite video on my iPhone 4 and uploaded it to my iPad 1 and I can say the first generation is capable of handling iMovie. I was able to export a 30 minute video (though I don’t recommend it…iMovie will become laggy). It took 29 minutes to export. Yeah that’s long but that’s video people.

So I think if the 4th gen iPod Touch can run iMovie (and it has the same processor and memory specs as the 1st gen iPad), then so I don’t see why it can’t run on the 1st gen. I just wish Apple would let first generation users authorize it so we don’t have to keep using this workaround.
