What would be the point of installing iMovie on the iPad with no camera?

You could transfer videos to the iPad from the iPad camera connection kit. It's kind of like how people use their camera to record and then transfering the video to their computer to edit...so yeah...

What are people supposed to do with iMovie on a device that doesn't record video?

Agreed! I believe this is a valid point.

Here is my point:
The original iMovie for iOS (1.0 & 1.1) did not support the iPad 1, then why would anyone expect an update (1.2) to have "BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY"? It's not like Apple took support away. It's the same as it always been.

In any case, I like the new iMovie for iOS version 1.2, can't wait to try it on the iPad 2 tomorrow.

I don't think anyone is looking for "backwards compatibility" so to speak. The iPad 1 and 2 have lot in common, and the original iMovie was formatted for the iPhone/iPod touch screen, so this being the first version with an iPad-native interface, it would make sense to try to port it.

Most people who use the desktop versions of iMovie don't record with just their Mac's built-in camera (do we not let "desktop" iMovie run on Mac Pros or Mac minis?), so if the iPad 1 can handle it, why not run it? I gave it a shot and it did a fine job of editing footage shot on my iPhone 4. Things worked flawlessly until iTunes recognized an "unsupported" app.

That being said, can this thread please stay more about working out the kinks to run it unofficially on the iPad 1, rather than the merits of using an iPad with a camera or not?

In that regard, has anyone thought of maybe modifying the softwareSupportedDeviceIds attribute in the iTunesMetaData.plist file?

They're not doing it because of greed... How useful can iMovie be if you dont have cameras? That's the reason.

just tried and succeeded to get it running on my 3G S. It works great.

thx...just tried it on my 3GS...and it works like a charm

i had tried the earlier hack of the ipa file to remove the device restriction, but apple got smart and disabled this method.

i understand why they didnt release it for iPad1 (no video camera)...but i never really understood why the 3GS was excluded

Dude, seriously, how can you not get this? Camera Connection Kit. iTunes import. Or one of the apps like Photo Transfer or Photo Sync that allows you to send photos and video from iPhone to iPad (or computer to either, in the case of Photo Sync) via wifi or bluetooth. It is PLENTY useful. Apple IS doing this out of greed, hoping to get those desperate enough for video editing to upgrade. Plenty will use it as an excuse. I almost did. Now I may wait and jailbreak for the first time if it allows me to use iMovie on iPad 1.

Agreed - can we put the "it has no cameras" argument to bed? To be honest, even if I had an iPad 2 with iMovie, I'd rather shoot video on something more "pocketable", or not be restricted to only bringing in video shot on that particular device. I don't think Apple is doing this out of greed necessarily, but more because people won't grasp the concept that if you install iMovie on an iPad 1, you're going to have to get your videos somewhere else.

That being said, it runs really nicely and I think a jailbreak modifying some plist things in the app should make it work fine...

Alright, people have said that they got it working.

For those people, how did you get video on? I ask again, does the Camera Connection Kit allow you to transfer video from a camera or SD card directly onto the iPad? If so, what format(s) work? (I don't own the Camera Connection Kit or iMovie, but if this works, I'll go buy both.)

If the only way to do it is to upload it through iTunes, then it's pointless to me - if I already have the video on my computer, I'll just edit it there.

I see mention of utilities to move iPhone-recorded video over, but I don't really care about iPhone-recorded video (I have an iPhone 3G which doesn't do video,) I care about videos I have recorded on my digital still camera in AVCHD or M-JPEG format.

Are people aware of the app reeldirector?

http://www.nexvio.com/product/ReelDirector.aspx

It's a video editing app that I've been running on my iPhone and I've been testing on my iPad 1 this week, and it "just works" (no hacks, no authentication difficulties), not sure why people dont just get that as it's also cheaper than imove

Also adding videos is quite easy, as long as you have an iPad camera connector kit and a supported camera, so far I've found the iPhone works (duh :) ) and also my sanyo cg20 recording at 720p, which is a great budget hd camcorder

http://sanyo.com/xacti/english/products/vpc_cg20/index.html

So you plug the sd card into the camera kit, plug that into your iPad, the photos app automatically launches, you pick the file you want to copy over and viola, it's in your photos app ready to pick up in reeldirector

Can't get this to work on my iPad 1 (32GB WiFi), App appears on the Home Screen, but when tapped it'll pop up a black screen, and then crash... Oh well... :(

tried it and it does work but like a few have said, you get an authorization message in itunes. Clicking cancel makes it go away but i dont think it does a full sync. Plus next time you plug it in you get same problem. We really need to moan at apple on this one. I've already submitted a bug report and written a review on the app store stating that although its a cool bit of software, they really need to provide support for iPad 1. The things is barely a year old. Its also not a device like a phone that expires after a year. This is a "Post PC" device! we should be able to get apps for it for years to come! I really think everyone should do the same. It does work sometimes.. look at the rotate/mute switch argument. Maybe apple will see sense if enough people complain.

Heres a video I took of me filming with my Sanyo, then copying the video to the iPad for ediing in reeldirector (should also work with imovie)

You probably sum up the questions that would be raised if iPad1 was supported officially. I haven't tried iMovie for iOS, but I think for many the point is, if you can't edit it on the device you shot it with, then use your computer. If you can, eg. iPhone4/iPad2, then edit on the device. If iMovie for iOS is nicer and easier to use than say iMovie on OS X, then it's a different story.

I have used the camera connection kit to upload both photos and movies into the Photo App. I have done this from a Nikon CoolPix 7900 (quicktime files) and they play fine.

Give this man a prize!!!!!! The only sane voice here..... why would you want iMovie on a non camera device lol defeats the purpose doesn't??

Since when do you need a camera do edit movies? Imagine that: Some people just LOVE to mess around with movies and video clips that they obtained from other sources. And when you take a look at the professional world, you will see that the folks who edit a movie are not the same people who shot it.

Apple is a walled garden company. The vast majority of users are fine with that with minimal complaining and are simply thankful for a smooth, rich experience.

The vast minority of users who want to hack or bypass the walled garden are fine but in effect are a distinctly different group of people.

Perhaps what is needed is a room just for garden breakers.

Hack (outside the garden)
-iPhone 3GS
-iPhone 4
-iPhone 5
-iPad
-iPad 2
-AppleTV 2

That way the whole S/N associated with the religious war receeds and actual useful information can prevail, yes even on non approved uses of the devices we own.

It doesn't really make sense to run iMovie on the 1st gen iPad since it does not have any cameras.

You know that "camera connection kit"? Many/most cameras do video now.
So yes, it does make sense to run iMovie on iPad 1.

Only sane explanation I can think of is lack of video compression hardware. Recompressing video could be brutal on battery life and CPU speed.

At least there's ReelDirector.

Yes.
H.264. (Maybe others, but that's the standard to stick with.)

I edit HD video this way. Seems to prefer 720p.

Insert CCK SD adapter. Insert SD card from H.264 "flash" video camera (I use a Sony Bloggie). Tap "Import Pictures". Wait. Run ReelDirector (or other video editor). Get busy.

$29 for CCK, $1.99 for ReelDirector. Not fast, but works.

Also, the built-in cameras on the iPad 2 are totally crap according to the reviews. So you'd probably prefer to record them on something else if possible. That would also prevent looking like a total tool recording video with your tablet :)

Edit: Serious, video recording with a 10" tablet??? Reminds me of this (Picture courtesy of Wired):

I tried to use a 720P 30fps movie I shot on my gopro HD on my iPad 1 with imovie. the program would crash when I tried to access the film, on the other hand realdirector works, still would prefer the new. I wonder if an iPad 2 will be able to handle 1080p, or if like the iPad 1 it will import from the SD card but cannot edit or playback.

if the iPad 2 will allow me to edit 1080p I will get one.

What would be the point of installing iMovie on the iPad with no camera?

Because we were told we can't? Because we might have some neat, geeky, limited or no practical use idea we want to try? Maybe we have access to an iPad1 and *might* be interested in iMovie + iPad2 but we want to taste it first?

How cares why. It's fun.

That said, it seems pretty obvious why it's only officially supported on iPad2. iPad1 doesn't have a camera. It's memory is to low. (yea, you can get it to run [poorly], yea you can import media[most people wont, if you actual want to it just makes more sense to upgrade], ya it'll run fine on an iPod [did you forget ipad has a lot smaller screen and so it runs a different UI then iPad?])
