I’m sure it beats the security badges we used at the military bases I was on in the 1980s. Yup, a badge where your security classification was determined by the number of ink dots placed in it using an ink pad and the end of a pencil eraser. The fewer the dots, the higher the clearance. Ah, the good ol’ days.

This sucks. How am I ever going to take other people's money now?

Actually this is really invasive.
I can unlock my buddy’s iPhone with Face ID. We’re both Caucasian, in our 30s, with beards, but other than that, we don’t look anything alike. If you’re interested in stealing other people’s money if this becomes a thing, I think this will make it easier as long as you select targets who don’t look entirely different from you.

And how will they verify my face with out having my face data.

fast forward 6 month. Oh sorry we had a breech and everyones face data has been stolen. Sorry that the data for your face (which you can't change) is out there and now these people can break into anything with face protection forever.

Its one thing to have your face data stored on a Secure Enclave in your own device, its another thing to store your face data on someone else's server in which you have no control of.

This is monumental hard pass for me.
Same with passwords, they store a hash of it instead of the actual data. The typical issue with passwords is there's always some trash website that stores the actual password then leaks it, but if everyone were using standardized face ID tech, that'd be a lot less likely to happen. And most likely the face ID wouldn't be the only step to get into something like an ATM, just an additional layer.

I'm still not interested in this, at least not until it's much more mature, I mean like 10 years.

Secure facial authentication for the cost of a HomePod Mini? How many of these are they expecting to sell? Where is the information stored? It may be processed locally, but wouldn’t my facial data be shared with another module at another location? How do multiple modules communicate with each other? How does the module learn as your face changes, and how is stored and updated across their network of modules?

And finally, is this a joke?

So many things in that movie have happened or are on the verge. Add this to the list. Great movie by the way.

just finished rewatching it on BBC iPlayer right now (can't find it on commercial streaming) & can't decide if Philip K Dick predicted the future or if we're just copying his ideas.

also; how can these devices *not* be networked / cloud stored if recognition is being used at many many endpoints? - the whole point of an ATM or international airport gate is universal global access & any terminal has to be able to call-up *their* copy of your face ...

This is absolutely STUPID. I will not stop wearing masks even after Covid-19 fades away. I do not want my face continually scanned either. The implementations could be awesome, but it’s the premise.

Intel has been making and selling very good 3D depth camera for many years. In fact I think they are the leader in this market.

I am the guy who just won this eBay action for a used Intel 3D depth camera. It is a well-made little "brick" that is now about 6 or 7 years old.

I bought this to support software development for depth cameras.

Intel's current depth camera is the D455 and you can see it here
https://www.intelrealsense.com/depth-camera-d455/

The above is 720 lines for the depth image and 800 for RGB. The other specs are impressive -- the maximum range for depth sensing is 6 meters and it does 90 frames per second. I suspect their specialize face system will have MUCH lower space all around and also a lower price

Depth cameras not new for them, what is new is packaging this technology for this market
