I worked with TSMC as a fab supplier for 20 years. They are an amazing company with significant technology, funding and customer support. It is no surprise Apple chose them as a fab partner they are best in class. In my long experience mainland China is less of an issue its earthquakes that cause the biggest threat. I am sure Apple has accounted for this by qualifying multiple fabs as we did back in the day. Sorry but US chip makers would not hold a candle to TSMC.

haha is someone asking why wafers are round not square? it is because layers applied to the silicon use centrifugal force which would not work if the wafers were square.

Amazing, another pack of companies asking for "social help" from the tax payers. If the business is not competitive in the market, bury it. End of story.
I've worked in the industry for 26 years. I don't know of a single fab that hasn't received subsidies or tax breaks. Not one. From the county, city, state or federal government. Without them they'd just build overseas and then we'd have nothing. Certainly not ideal but that's the reality of it.
Fabs are outrageously expensive to build and operate.

We have a ton of Intel fabs (product and research) out here in Oregon. There's certainly some economic impact to the folks sitting in the bunny suits, but you're spot on here. The real impact is the engineers and researchers. There's a whole lot of folks doing real well in Oregon on their Intel paychecks.
Indeed. The fundamental strength of the US economy is our Intellectual Property, not our manual labor.

This isn't 1950's, where people go to jobs at "factories" and earn a "wage".

We are an economy where people sit at home on their computer to come up with ideas, and the more people understand that the better off they will be.

America has the best university system in the world, and that is why our economy is so resilient when all the factory jobs are gone.

If a person in China can make something cheaper, LET THEM.

That's where the illegal people come in - they get paid under the table and don't have to make $15/hour like legal people have to.
That's nothing but thinly veiled racism, and doesn't align with existing hiring practices.

Apple and others don't just protect workers in other countries; they would not allow workers to be taken advantage of like that locally. Even if you have the most cynical view of these companies they simply wouldn't like the bad press of using illegal workers.

In the case of TSMC its not just they can do it cheaper, they can do it better and faster. Customer support, technology, time to market. They are the full nine yards. US fabs? Hmmmm not even close.

No, the idea of America is that it was founded as an open-borders society.

America doesn't exist without open borders.

If you like closed borders, you should move to a different country.
This is absolute nonsense. You’re completely making up gibberish. America has been a sovereign nation with defined borders for over two hundred years. Stop spreading stupidity and read some history books. Americas history of legal immigration does not mean open borders. It would be great if people so uneducated on topics would stop commenting, lest they be confused for foreign trolls deliberately spreading misinformation.

So, in the US all you need to do is let your business fall apart (specifically Intel) through your own ineptitude, and the gov't (we the tax payer) will pay you incentives to "fix" it? I wonder what kind of bonuses the Intel execs have been getting for the last 10 years?

Yup. Welcome to America in 2021 where corporations own the government and media keeps people angry at each other instead of the elites who are destroying our government.

I think we’re kinda saying the same thing...your company hires more entry-level people because they can get away with paying them peanuts, while the engineers require 6-figure salaries.
I agree, but that is the side effect that goes with free market capitalism. It's all about making the maximum ROI for the shareholder. I have worked in the corporate world for the last 35ish years at 2 fortune 100 financial companies. It is all about ROI and did we meet the Wall Street expectations. always get rid of the high priced employees and get lower ones...that does not mean get low skilled ones, just get rid of the ones that have been there for a long time and get new ones with the same or better skills at a lower price.

Unfortunately in the capitalist world it's all about the Benjamins....you can have a company that makes the greatest "widget" in the world, but if the don't produce a good ROI, then they will be called a "sell" by Wall Street and that will kill the company......very sad.

Curious... Is it even possible to pull a square/rectangular boule from a seed crystal?

The writing was on the wall for Intel years ago. TSMC just blew them away. The companies that invented the best widgets in the world chose TSMC not Intel or AMD or anyone else. I was privileged to be involved right at the start with the company that brought CMOS single chip Bluetooth to the market (Eriksen invented it but it was a 3 chip solution costly and inefficient). We chose TSMC as do most innovative companies.

No it wasn't. What are you drinking? The concept of "open borders" didn't even exist when America was founded as a Republic. Stop promulgating communist propaganda. Open borders, indeed. lol.

What is the image? I'm under the impression it's a bunch of manufacturered chips, but I'm confused why it seems to be on a copper circle... the chips themselves are all rectangular, are they not? So why are they made as a circle - aren't all the rounded edges a waste of space? Something I think is probably quite wrong...

Pizza is round, comes in a square box and is cut into wedges....

Sleepy Joe more interested in pandering to the CCP than he is interested in advancing the hopes and dreams of the American citizen. lol Pwease Pwesident Biden, givs us money! lol.
What a painfully anti Biden statement with no meat... no facts to really substantiate your smear... I feel it's facetious to make strong political statements like this without stating your entire position in a nutshell on the matter. Why don't you expand on your thoughts here and we'll see if you're onto something? It sounds like you're angry!

+1 to this numbers and results talk and smear talk walks in this context. Boohoo to U.S. companies begging for subsidies - other companies are dealing with the global economy without pandering to politicians in a public way.

Communist propaganda??? Open or closed borders has nothing to do with communism. A communist country may in fact be more likely to close their borders as they would have a number of health and social benefits that outsiders would want such as free healthcare and education.
