Tom's Hardware said that AMD and Nvidia are both at least a year behind Intel in the video playback field. probably explains why the Adobe Flash battery tests were so good according to Anand

So, the "Nehalem" Mac Pros could be updated while the "Westmere" Mac Pros could stay the same or get a slight speed/spec bump. Just like what happened last summer with the new 8-core/12-core boxes. ;)

In theory, yes, but IMO that's unlikely. Mac Pro was updated quite recently in August. The period between last two updates has been a year and couple of months so Q4 2011 would fit in Apple's update pattern too, and it would keep the Mac Pro as "pro" level machine by utilizing the high-end chipset and CPUs, rather than mainstream LGA 1155 parts (though performance may be the same with two similarly specced CPUs).

Big thanks for your thoughts Hellhammer & KnightWRX.

So it seems there's a chance, however narrow, that apple could introduce a quad sandy bridge early 2011, but the safe money is on them sticking to their snail-pace update cycle, meaning Q4 2011, or even Q1 2012.

I felt very let down by apple when they switched to intel, making my PPC G5 virtually redundant. If they pull the rug on me again after investing this time round by releasing the Sandy Bridge just afterwards, without due warning, then me and apple desktops will finally be parting ways. A shame since i've stuck with apple while the majority of my industry have chosen Windows.

Anyway, rant over - thanks again. I guess i'll have to chance it and update now, since i can't wait until Q4.

What a shame just a little to late for the Christmas shoppers. Well, as the saying goes good things come to those who wait. This is great news for all future macbook & mac pro buyers

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148a Safari/6533.18.5)

So any guesses on when the MacBook pro line up will be upgraded?

February is the running guess.

But I still want a 13" pro machine.
Me too. I'm not interested in another plastic MacBook. As much as I loved my BlackBook, I'm only interested in the aluminum unibody version going forward.

And, as a musician and photographer, it would be a personal tragedy if the 13" MBP lost it's FireWire connectivity. Which is what I suspect would happen if the 13" versions were all MacBooks (and not MacBook Pros).

I'm there with you guys, though Apple needlessly took it out of the white MacBook and have since identified it as a "Pro" feature as far as their laptops are concerned. But that's probably what's going to happen, sadly; we will be sequestered to the 15" MacBook Pro for features beyond the bare minimum.

My take is that the MacBook Pro's will have the FW and an optical drive.

The next $999 13" MacBook will be Aluminum, the SB Processor, and no more optical drive (like the Air's - get the external if you really need it).

The optical drive is next to go on Apple's list. I remember the uprising when Apple got rid of the Floppy Drive... ;)

no it is reasonable.....

Fast i5 cpu (with intel IGP on CPU)
nVidia GT425 with 1 or 2GB of video ram
5+ hour battery life (some last even longer)
all for under $999

nvidia optimus gives it good battery life and decent for the money gaming performance

http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-Geforce-GT-425M.34152.0.html
The gaming performance of the GT 425M is sufficient for medium detail settings in modern games like Battlefield Bad Company 2. Less demanding games should run in high detail settings.
So I stand by what I said. Plus, IGPs don't come with their own RAM, most of the time anyway. Where do you get your info from?

Why would Apple want to basically sell a cheaper and faster Air with more internal storage capacity?

No. The MB White stays in all its plastic splendor. If anything, the 13" MBP dies leaving a clear choice for 13" users to choose from.

That'd make sense if there was a viable option poised to take its place. Sure, downloadable software is the future, but it's not the present in the way that CD-ROM based software was for Macs in 1998 when the first iMac started the floppy-killing trend. Downloading Final Cut Studio, StarCraft II, and iLife is still a pain in the ass with current ISP speeds.

As for the next MacBook being aluminum akin to the 13" Pro (which is poised to disappear), then sure, though they already did that song and dance and that got us where we are now.

As much as I personally like the 13" MacBook Pro best of all the 13" Mac laptop offerings, I couldn't agree with you more.

Can I get a white MacBook with an SSD drive? No.

Also, the 13" Pro has an SD card slot.

Same logic board (save for the FireWire port), same processor, same memory, same chipset, same IGP. No, it doesn't have the SD slot. Yes, you could install a 2.5" SSD into a white MacBook, but no Apple won't sell you one. So quit being a pansy and install one yourself; it's way cheaper that way anyway.

Hopefully by then, if not sooner :(
Nearly everyone at CES is going to have quad core mobile Sandy Bridge out on 1/9 or just a little later. Both desktop and mobile dual cores are delayed until next month.

I believe that vendors wanted to clear out the stock of Clarksfield based notebooks as soon as possible. Arrandale's later higher clocked versions are still solid. Clock speeds bumped up nicely in the past few months. (Core i3 380M and Core i5 460/560M hover at 2.5 GHz or higher already.)

Which means what for those of us patiently waiting for updated MBPs?

If you're waiting for the 15" as your sig indicates... you'll most likely be pleased with the newer version. At least there's room in the thing for a discrete GPU and I really can't picture Apple staying with IGP's in the 15/17 and much pricier models.

It's us MBP13 holdouts that are screwed I think. Maybe I'll just get me a bushel of Wal-Mart Acers to last me until Ivy Bridge. :(

Does Apple normally have an event or update products after CES?

Nothing, necessarily. Keep waiting, they'll likely be updated in February.

Yeah, most likely. Meh, the 13" MBP was fun while it lasted.

They used to have Macworld, but they're no longer a part of that. Now they update whenever they're ready to, i.e. not on a scheduled timeframe.

It is not 5% either, buddy.

All you are doing is arguing for the sake of arguing. Get over it, you lost the argument, whether some of the games are an exact 5% difference less(which some of them are), or more it still won't be as noticeable as you are so hell bent on proving. You've ran backwards on previous claims and all you are doing is biting your tongue trying to scramble for a reason to even continue on. I'm done checking this thread and enjoy being added to my ignore list, kid. Next time you post an article post one that actually defends your side. Not like it matters since I thankfully won't ever see the garbage that is your posts again. ;)
