Is it better to just wait for Ivy Bridge? :D
The Intel 7 Series appears to be a much more significant change comparatively.

The P67 can be used on LGA1156 given the identical DMI signaling. You do not gain the doubled speed though and are still limited to 2.5 GT/s.

It just seems like there have been several issues with the new platform in general

Although the 6-series chipset finally brought native 6Gbps SATA to Intel platforms it failed to fix issues with 23.976 fps video playback. Intel also failed to deliver a chipset that can support SNB's processor graphics as well as overclocking

I know that Intel doesn't allow 3rd party manufacturers but doesn't Apple use a custom Intel chipset for their hardware?

There is very little if any difference between PC and Mac when it comes to the internal Hardware, sure Apple customs its internals for the design but everything else is basically a PC all the way. Its all about the full package you know OS X that is the real difference. Oh and their monitors are ISP not TN :D

It was something about the graphics support. Maybe it was the previous generation.
There was the Uprated Santa Rosa platform but that can solely be accomplished via overclocking on almost any platform.

You are much more dependent on multiplier control post-Sandy Bridge.

The 6 Series isn't that much different from the 5 Series.

Well, take note Nvidia. That's how you handle this sort of issue: you don't hide such things.

My point was that one cannot assert Apple won't use some non-standard Intel chipset, not that it would be so different as to not have the SATA problem.

Something much more custom would have to be between Intel and Apple but I find it highly unlikely.

Sounds more like someone/some people are getting fired soon...

Why does anybody have to get fired? Intel has been leading the industry in chip development for years without skipping a beat. Nobody deserves to lose their job after one mistake in years.

I agree with you.
But there are mistakes and mistakes and this one is a very public very expensive mistake =X

If you were running Intel wouldn't you like to find a guilty part?

Yes, and then I take the appropriate action to fix the problem so it doesn't happen again. Firing some of the smartest chip engineers in the world isn't the answer.

i've seen articles about how intel develops CPU's and there are too many people to fire

Will be interesting to see if the affected products are still announced by Apple and just given a later release date.

The iMacs likely weren't going to launch soon enough to be affected by this. The MBPs are another story entirely. I'm guessing April.

That is too bad, but I don't think Apple have any plans of adopting to the new Sandybridge anytime soon, so I don't think it really ruined any plans for upcoming iMacs or Macbooks..
