I havent read all the replies, but I think Apple is going to take some engineers from IBM and use intels facilities to produce new PPCs. In a nutshell, Apple takes over developement, using intels fab facilities. I dont care what happens, as long as its still OS X!!!

Well I sat back and took a breath and realized one positive thing...

My computers should still run on Tuesday as good as they did on Monday no matter what Steve has to say...

I just dread the resale going from over $1,000 to about $100 within a few mins. Life will go on, it is not the first time I have lost big on a purchase.

Being the nice guy I am, I will give you 200$ right now to help alleviate your losses. Its double what you will get tommorrow! I am just nice like that!

PM me with your paypal addy, so we can get this done ;)

I think this is the key statement. I'm sure Apple Marketing thinks most people feel this way. OSX will attract a lot more customers running on an intel chip.

Downloading freeware and shareware plus updates is going to be confusing now...you will really have to read the fine print on what version of OSX it will run and on what processor you need, etc.

Its called fat binaries, and noone will have to know what they are downloading. Download, click, and the software figures it all out for you.

Nothing revealing, just some recent Intel Apple comments

Some recent Intel comments on Apple: http://www.macworld.com/news/2005/06/05/chandrasekher/index.php

IDGNS: The Wall Street Journal recently reported that Intel has been trying to get Apple to use its processors. Has Intel been talking with Apple?

Chandrasekher: We always talk to Apple. Apple is a design win that we’ve coveted for 20 years and we continue to covet them as a design win. We will never give up on Apple.

IDGNS: What would you be willing to do in order to win Apple’s business?

Chandrasekher: Well, nothing unnatural that we wouldn’t do for other design wins. It’s got to make sense from a business standpoint. We would do what makes economic sense. If we can do that and still get the design win, we’d do it.

Exactly - If I could have OSX running on my PC I'd buy it tomorrow. Maybe as a secondary OS or as a general use os, leaving Windows for programming, gaming and other knick knacks.

I have dreamed of OS X on my ThinkPad (love my PB, but always had an affection for the eraser pointer too). Too bad IBM has sold off the TP line.

I hope the use of an Intel chip will constitute more exposure when it comes to the gaming market. I really would like to see more and more cutting edge games be released the same time as the PC version. Of course, other programs would be cool but the only reason I still have a PC and not only macs is for the gaming.

At least with Intel Macs should have better fps rates when comes to games, as well as latest video cards. That is my guess. :)

?

I still don't understand why everyone's panties are in a knot over this.
Like always steve has done his research, evaluated his options, and will likely come to an informed descision. The fact is that Jobs have more info on wether or not this is a good idea than anyone losing sleep over this with whiny posts about the death of apple. Steve would not do this if it didn't provide apple with some advantage. Besides, IBM still dosen't have a feasible option for notebooks and it's just about the 2 year mark of the 3ghz promise. an intel mac is still a mac. So get some sleep.

2. Apple really is going to move to x86 and they have a kick-ass transition plan.

I think this is the one. Whilst I initially had serious doubts about the possible move to x86, I think that there are now enough reliable sources that it's inevitable.

My prediction is that Steve will sell the x86 idea to developers by means of a surprise announcement relating to emulation technology. If he can provide some sort of assurance that software developed and compiled today will still operate with acceptable performance on any Macintosh manufactured in the next few years, then the conference should be able to continue as normal with no significant backlash.

The only aspect of the transition that I'm still uncomfortable with is the short to medium term impact on sales. Whilst I have every confidence that software support for PPC hardware will continue for some time, I still somehow don't feel comfortable about committing myself to PPC for another three years or so. With that in mind, I expect that I will not replace my machine until the first x86 iBooks start rolling off the production line.

Tread? Are we talking about Michelins now?

You really impress me with your comments. Too bad your comments sound like they are coming from a very uneducated person. I have discussed the switch to Intel and now I am tired so I will leave for the night and come back tomorrow to see what happens. Thanks to all of you who stood up for me and we will make it through this. TorbX, I am glad that you were not with me in Iraq watching my back. I am off to surf the net for something that will take my mind off of this.

Okay, I have some statements to make:

1. Whatever - in every sense.

2. I came her to read about Apple + Intel, not 5th grades. I'm one of those reloading the page every 10 sec, so the b*ulls*it posts offended me.

3. I never disrespected you. I was slapping all of you who spun off in a discussion about 5th grades. I just grabbed the last statement, wich was yours, and quoted it - only to make people understand what was pissing me off.

4. You offended me without reason. As far as education goes; law school in Norway is 5 years, + 2 to become a lawer. I'm halfway there.

Can we stop this now?

You really can't talk about his spelling: you made a similar mistake (worse because he forgot an H and you missed one word entirely for another).

ABC News gets on board with this story

Type "Apple Intel" on Google.
This story hit their news search 25 minutes ago. Here it is:

http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory?id=822448

I'd call this a rather official announcement if it's coming from ABC, otherwise it's the biggest hoax hatched by any major company to stop the rumors mills from turning once and for all.

If it's true, I just have to say I am glad I took my original investment in Apple and banked it and am now sitting on profit shares. If it was my own cash that was being played with on this news, I would be first in line to SELL SELL SELL tomorrow morning. This is going to be the death of Apple if this happens. I like my OS X, but I like that it runs on a Power PC chip.
Unless Intel has something else up its sleeve. Who knows, lets speculate a bit. Maybe Intel is committing to support of a newer power PC compatible technology. We will find out tomorrow afternoon.

Mac to Intel simply for movie DRM????

According to this wired writer http://blog.wired.com/cultofmac/ (and several other news sites) , apparently Mac's will start to use Intel chips primarily because they want to use the DRM technology that will be built into the new Pentium D chips.

I don't know if this is smart or not, to completely change the processor architecture of a Mac simply for a secure "iFlicks" store, but sounds like that is one of the big factors.

++Also, a few thoughts 1) I would be nice to have faster, more "cutting edge processors (though an Intel designed "Power" processor sounds much better than a x86 one, and 2) What is going to happen to all (and by all I mean every Mac user) who has a current G3-G4-G5, are we all going to run into a sort of forced obsolescence thing in the next two years (this would be terrible).

Nope, cause you're only halfway there. You sound like very happy guy. There's a degree of patience that is involved in the practice of law. Graduate.

Thanks.. And I'm from Norway, and I rarely use English.

Why will this be the death of Apple? Because some zealots are offended?
