Competition is good for us as customers.

The price for the M1 Macbook Pro and let's say a dell XPS 13" 11th gen i7 is nearly the same (well the XPS is 10% less with 16gb memory more) - so it is legit to compare the performance.

Btw. the Dell has Thunderbolt 4 and a Micro SD slot.
The M1 MacBook Air is cheaper than the XPS and nearly as fast as the Pro. All TB4 means is that the Dell can connect to 2 external monitors or an 8K. Not that I trust integrated graphics on an 8K monitor (if you can even find one).

This is bad strategy. Instead of doing this, which invites backlash and reeks of desperation, Intel should say something like they are excited by the competition and promise people that they have great things coming up and that fans won't be disappointed. Something like that.

I think it’s time Apple pushes for false advertising (like what Dell, HP and the competition complained about when Apple launched the G5 as The worlds most powerful computer - like 6mths after it‘s launch).

I didn't say or suggest that, Intel has lost Apple as a CPU customer, they get beaten and lost marketshare to AMD ... the OEMs are just that, OEMs, they are not in the game to make their own Arms (or CPUs, look how long it took Apple to get where they are now) and MSFT is not making a move, yet ... Intel is like wounded wild animal right now which is part of why we seeing this "comparison", they do not yet have anything better to show, they need to sell what they got.

I guess, then, you’ve heard it here first: Microsoft is, indeed, working on an M1 competitor.

I know right?! Different sku’s used after 3 months for Intel to come up with “a PowerPoint presentation as a PDF file is up to 2.3x faster” LMAO! Seriously?

Intel is looking a LOT like a knuckle dragger

10 years is an eternity. Right now you can bet that lots of OEMs are working on plans to introduce their own Arm processors, as is Microsoft, and Qualcomm is working on targeting the desktop market with something more competitive with apple.

Intel is right to worry.
Agreed. The target for this campaign isn’t so much Apple (who has no incentive to switch back to Intel or delay its transition) but more PC OEMs and Microsoft. Intel needs to convince them that they have turned the corner and that things will improve once they get to 7nm and beyond.

Tiger Lake does seem like a major improvement. With the 10th Gen customers had to choose between improved GPU and energy performance (Ice Lake) and improved CPU performance (Comet Lake). Tiger Lake offers both.

Let's remember here that this is specifically about APPLE SILICON; not ARM. ARM is just an ISA and Apple uses a modded version of it with everything else being 100% Apple in house designs. You can't just throw any Cortex based SoC in a laptop and get M1 level performance. Also, remember macOS Big Sur is specifically written to Apple Silicon (well the version on the AS Macs is) so the level of hardware software compatibility is extremely high.

As to Apple when they went to Intel, they caught lightning in a bottle as they did it right when Intel turned the entire industry on its ear with the Core Duo (two Pentium-M cores a.k.a Dothan) and at that time yes Intel was the thoroughbred as the Core Duo and especially the Core2Duo (Conroe) were incredible chips.

The recent Intel "benchmarks" display was puerile and dumb. A much better approach would be to show they can play in the same PPW arena and do it with real world use cases.

I'm an x86 fan. But come on Intel, not like this. It's okay to lose. Just make sure Alder Lake rocks... Tiger lake is cool, but m1 has you beat in terms of performance and certainly in terms of efficiency. Although I will say that Tiger Lake is currently only 4 cores... when 8-core Tiger Lake drops, it will likely outperform M1.

Intel does win on better connectivity options with its thunderbolt4 tech... can connect to two 4k monitors out of the box, unlike the m1. And windows does support EGPUs unlike macos with the m1.

But m1 consumes much less power for the performance. And is seriously impressive. So much so that the MacBook air doesn't even need a fan. Show me a high performance Intel-based mobile machine without a fan machine that competes with the Air in terms of performance...

Just admit defeat and innovate. Don't delude yourself.
Agreed, but I would argue though that M1s aren’t “true” 8-core machines though, more comparable to 5-cores maybe, when tiger lake 8-cores arrive then it should be compared to the corresponding Mx one.

Those other 4 cores are actually pretty fast. Based on the op instruction/retire rate, looks more like they it’s equivalent to 6.5 of the high performance cores.

I agree with your point about target audience with Intel.

Apple has definitely has created a good bit of distance from Intel with the M1. Hopefully, the divide will grow into a vast chasm. If Apple can keep their base models in ranch like the Air, they have a good possibility of picking up more market share. And if Windows gets on board with creating a native OS version, that would be another nail in Intel’s coffin, in my opinion.

To me this actually just says they don't have an answer. What's even sadder is the M1 is Apple's entry level chip.
This story is really about damage control. That is all. It doesn’t matter if its true or not, so long has there is public perception that it is. Intel is leveraging their long established history will smooth over this PR mess that has been created from them being caught in the proverbial wind.

True. That's a smarter marketing. But imo the ego in tech companies is extremely high that the management are prone to things like this just to prove their ego.

You all know the minute after Apple had their event for the M1 chip, Intel was on the horn calling for an immediate exec committee meeting. Just like when Apple released the iPhone and all the mobile manufacturers were tearing into their product design teams on how they could be so inept. Intel needs to first start with AMD before they can even compete with Apple moving forward.

i'm sorry... I don't remember you calling Apple's most vague language during M1 macbook announcement as "carefully crafted"... Intel is being stupid, but let's not be hypocrits here..
This is reaaallly damn specific though:
For example, Intel said that exporting a PowerPoint presentation as a PDF file is up to 2.3x faster on a Windows laptop equipped with an 11th Generation Core i7 processor and 16GB of RAM compared to completing the same task on a 13-inch MacBook Pro with the M1 chip and 16GB of RAM, with Intel noting that PowerPoint ran natively on both systems.

This reeks a bit of desperation from Intel, mismatched hardware, no mention if the software is optimized for ARM or Intel. I guess Intel expects Apple to wait for Intel to catch up before releasing even more powerful and optimized CPUs/Silicone. Also no mention of fan noise and how much power these mismatched Intel CPUs are using.

Yeah, I do hope Intel can innovate again and create some compelling products as it improves the entire tech industry, but after a lost decade by Intel, I wouldn't bet on it.

There should be a new benchmark. Let me suggest:

How long it takes to roast your genitals when you’re running Premiere on your lap.

How many sperm did you kill doing those Blender renders on your lap.

I think Intel will win. Your genitals will be grilled to a crisp and your sperm will be baked to death.

I think the comment “M1 is a low power chip” says all we need to know about what’s in store for the M family of processors. Scary to think the M1 is just the start. Can only imagine how a 16” MBP with M processor will perform.
Even if it was fast M1 can only run a handful of software which Intel makes MacBook’s the best laptop in this planet to run Windows and OSX natively.
