no first hand experience with the z, but sony's build quality is supposed to be superior to apple's

And then you woke up...:D
Hm, I'm really considering buying a Sony Vaio Z if apple doesn't come up with something quick..Does anyone have experience with these machines? How is the build quality compared with a MBP?

I went to both the Apple store and the Sony Style store yesterday to help me make up my mind about the same thing. What I found was that the Sony Z was nice and thin and light, but because of this its definately not as sturdy and solid as the macs. I noticed the top cover even flexes a little when you open it because its so thin. The overall design is nice on the Sony and I got used to the spaced out chicklet keyboard with a few strokes.

However, unfortunately, the look, the feel, the touch just doesn't quite make me want to choose it over a macbook pro with presumed updates, especially for the price, which is pretty close to a mac when you build a vaio Z to its top specs. I'm still waiting, especially since macs can run Windows and OSX. At least I will wait until August. That's all the time I have. Otherwise I will get another white macbook and build it to my liking.

I'm sorry I'm just a sucker for mac no matter how hard I try.:apple:

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_2 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7D11 Safari/528.16)

I've been waiting years to be able to buy a MBP, finally the time has come. But Now I'm waiting for an update that's taking forever. I've almost resorted to buying the current models. Hurry apple, I'm beyond anxious. I want an i7 MBP PLEASE

May be apple is waiting for next stepping that optimizes power consumption. Anandtech did mention in arrandale review that there is a scope for optimizing 32nm process. That should make I7-620( and may be even I7-640) lot more attractive to apple.

but how could apple possibly release it if the chips r out of stock?
unless.... apple's at fault for it!;)

Macbook Pro tommorrow?

Their is a new update for mac, this more likely infers that the new macbooks will be released as a earlier forum stated that it will be released on Tuesday the 23rd

And for those of you that "can't believe" Apple is focusing more on the iPad and the iPhone these days... seriously? You're faulting a company for investing in the technology that is making them profitable? Without the iPhone, iPod and iPad, our favorite company likely wouldn't exist anymore. They certainly wouldn't be nearly as well capitalized. More capital = more money to invest in research = better products in the future. So, stop whining about how you wish they'd stop focusing so much on the things that are their core business and move on. Waiting an extra 3 months for something really isn't that bad.

it is if you only have 4 months to live. you would only have 1 month to play with the dam thing. what could you do in 1 month. i make music so maybe produce a couple of songs but it would be better to have it for longer to play longer games like x terren conflict. i really wish they would hurry up anyway, who cares about the future

It's finally here!!! (Almost)

when is it coming out

The new MacPro's are set for release on the 30th. I have an uncle who works for Wired mag & they just had a writers meeting regarding the upcoming release of the new MBP's.

They're getting an advanced demo over the weekend to play with in order to have a online review ready for the 30th!!!

Yessss.

You think Apple would release new MBPs four days before the iPad release? I doubt it.

are you just fooling us all around. please don't do that if you are. if you are telling the truth this is very good news as i am getting sick of waiting. cheers

I bet: YES!!!

they just had a writers meeting

and your uncle has nothing better to do than to tell you that right away...
I think thats just a fake!!!

Don't get me wrong... but apple always kept their update-secrets too good, as that this could be true...

As long as there is no confirmation from other 'reviewers', I don't believe it...

EDIT: But - regarding the 'sellout' in all refurb-sections - that does not mean that an update next Tuesday is not possible ;)

HP is shipping it's new XEON 5600 products on the 29th. who in their right mind would pay $3000 or more for a workstation with last year's tech?

Wait, he was talking about Mac Pros, wasn't he? How did that get into a discussion about notebook chips?

GEEZUS! MBP and MP commentors are always wrestling each other, acting like MBP users have no right to comment in 'desktop' forums and MP users have no right to comment in 'notebook' forums... We're all playing the same game, especially now because both machines are extremely overdue for an update. Apple has updated MBP's and MB's at the same event before, haven't they? They could do it again in 2010 - in fact they need to, and QUICK.

Given that information, his point is valid. We've always discussed how every OEM has been putting i5's and i7's into their mobile machines... now competitors are placing XEON 5600 (the likely chip for the MacPro, I don't know how likely that Intel Extreme 980 or whatever is...) making updates across the board even more pressing.

Hold on, I'm not saying that MPs and MBPs can't be discussed together, and yes it seems that everything is part of Apple's delaying tactics now. I'm just saying that the subject of this thread is speculation that the MBP delay is due to a shortage of notebook cpus, and that should not affect the MP release.

Unless Apple had some specific reason to release the two together, in the same event. One could hold back the other. In the same respect, one could also push the other toward release faster, theoretically. I just don't think his comment, or others that people have made, are off base cosidering how overdue both machines are.

Good point. I accept that. As far as the release goes, anything is possible at this stage.

I'm more concerned about battery life actually...

Same here. I was looking at a Lenovo Y550P on Newegg.com (well comon, I've been waiting since November) and noticed the battery life was something like an hour and a half with the i7 chip, crazy. Not sure if it was mainly because of the processor, but I would guess Apple is taking their time to sort out battery life issues - especially after their "recent" 7 hour battery life update.

Uncle at Wired

Are you sure he was not referring to the IPAD? It was in the news that prominent reviewers (i.e., Wired, etc) would be receiving the iPad by this weekend to have reviews prepared by the release next week.

Can you confirm with your uncle?

Thanks!

~Lu
