Because college students only do word processing? Last time i checked, college students A) are on a budget and B) play video games more than any other group of people out there.

I have an iBook and push the graphics card as far as it will go to play games, photoshop, and whatever else. You cannot say it wasn't made for gaming when every version before it had a 32MB card. That is a decent amount for certain types of games especially for a person on a budget. Until someone can prove that the Integrated Graphics are equivalent to the 32MB card before it, IT IS A STEP DOWN. Period. And a bad move.

If you have to play games suitable for a 32MB vga card, for sure the GMA950 is perfectly fine and much better.

Ok, Apple: If I don't get something that can replace the 12" powerbook by end of June, I'm buying a Dell and put a hacked OSX on it.

The built in video is no slouch..
When I had my DTK it had on board video. The exact same video.
I played Call Of Duty and Medal Of Honor on a regular basis with no problem.

Integrated graphics have come a long way. Intel are supposed to be releasing another chipset soon called the G965, which is highly likely to find its way into the next Mini and MacBook (if the MB does have Integrated Graphics). It supports DDR 800 and Shader Model 3.0 (Pixel + Vertex!), so it should perform much better.

The problem with intel graphics is that many of the claimed features are not 100% true. I mean, some of them are implemented in software by the drivers, (e.g.: the T&L features) and one of the Core processors is supposed to do the actual work. This strategy however, works very well in some special cases (e.g.: for poligons throughput; see low-level OpenGL benchmarks for GMA 950).

So even if they claim "whatever shader model"... don't expect miracles!

I agree, while integrated graphiccs arent ideal to play games on, theyre not horrible. The compaq im running now has an old school(4 years old!) nvidia integrated graphics chip and runs Medal of Honor and Call Of Duty on medium/low settings at 20-30 fps no problem. The machine only has 256mb ram in it as well, runs most games from 2 years ago perfectly fine. If you want to play the newest games a laptop, even with dedicated graphics is far from ideal anyway.

IIG isnt a big deal, but I still think at least the highend MB model will have a dedicated chip.

Edit: The chip in my old compaq is a nvidia GeForce 2 integrated GPU using 32mb of my systems 256mb of PC2100 DDR266 ram. On that note, I think Ill go play some COD.

Well, i've just sold my iBook G4 on eBay in anticipation of these MacBook's.

You guys better not be wrong!

Its a 1.2GHz 12" W/512MB and a 60GB HD - Combo. Not to shabby i've got all the original disk's etc and the box. Someone "Buy-It-Now" 'd for £475!

So...I've got now £950 and I can buy before VAT

Looking good so far...:D :D

What do you think is a better value? The best MacBook, with all built to order options maxed out? Or a MacBook Pro with no upgrades. They'd be about the same price right?

i guess we'll have to wait and see what the spec on the macbook will be, but i would say most likely it would be the macbook with all the bto options maxed out. same processor speed, get 100/120 gig hard drive, 1.5/2 gigs of ram and all you're sacrificing is screen size

External Monitors?

I am waiting to replace my two plus year old iBook described in my signature with a new MacBook. My only concern is that the Integrated Graphics won't support a large external monitor (reason I want to replace my current iBook). Anybody have any info as too how large a monitor intel's integrated graphics can support?

The integrated graphics in the Mac mini can support the 23" Cinema Display if that's any clue. However, If you want the 30" Display, you'll be out of luck with Intel's chip.

How do we know it'll have integrated graphics? I thought it wasn't confirmed yet................. *scared look*.

me too.

but i still think it would be ridiculous of apple to put it out that late. i mean, dell already has there consumer notebook with the duo, what the heck is taking apple so long?

and why the **** haven't they acknowledged the g*d d*mn anniversary yet!

Hey, I'm not sure if somepne has already asked this but are typical 13" laptops larger than their 12" counterparts? I mean, I think its a pretty safe bet that the new Macbooks will be thinner than the current 12 inch ibooks? but do u think they will be smaller or larger than either the current 12 ibook or pb? and how about weight? did the MBP shave off any poundage from the 15 PB?

Thanks animefan_1. 23 inch monitor would be plenty for my plans. I'm hoping the new MacBook can run that monitor while closed (unlike my current iBook). I have a wireless KB/mouse for when I want to work at home with the large monitor. I just do standard stuff like word processing, internet, and some PS Elements Work. That is very encouraging info for me:) .

No one knows, it's just speculation for now. I'm hoping for at least ATi's X1300 or X1400.

I would guess that the MacBook will be thinner (like you said), but will also be a bit wider as well. The front to back dimensions will probably be about the same as the current iBook (taking into account the iSight).

BTW: The MBP weighs the same as the 15" PowerBook it replaced.

Apple designs their computers, Dell slaps them together.

If you're this upset about Apple not celebrating their birthday, I'd hate to see you if someone forgot yours. ;) Seriously though, Apple has a ton of work to do and who knows when we'll see something, if at all. Remember: the 20th Anniversary Mac came out about a year after Apple's birthday.

I read somewhere that the MBP wieght exactly the same as the 15" powerbook. It's thinner than the powerbook, but I guess the weight comes from the bigger battery in the Macbook Pro.

I measured a buddy's 12" powerbook and with a 13.3" widescreen, the laptop would be roughly 1 inch wider than the 12" powerbook. I guess the Macbook will be about 1.3" thick since marketing won't allow it to be as thin as the Macbook Pro. Besides, it is probable that a plastic case will be used and this has to be a bit thicker than if it were aluminium. Hopefully this means the high end version will have a "true" superdrive (still, the MBP would look bad in comparison, so don't expect the dual layer drive on the Macbook).

This said I think the Macbook will be about the same size as the cureent 12" iBook. Probably slightly thinner but as wide as the 12" iBook (that had some space on the sides of the keyboard). The display is said to have no mechanical latches but magnets instead. iSight and the remote for front row are also pretty probable. I hope the IR sensor will be nicely hidden by the case as the sleep LED is in current iBooks. The sensor looks kinda odd on the MBP and the Mac Mini. Enough light should pass through the plastic (it's plenty for the sleep LED) so technically, that should work and make the whole thing more elegant. The iBook would look pretty sexy if the hinge was larger and the surface around the keyboard would be glossy and not matte and pick up up dirt so fast.

Lastly I doubt there will be a black version of the Macbook. 2 dofferent colors works for the iPod because it's sold in very large numbers and has no BTO options. However the Macbook would have quite some BTO options and it may be tough having the case to worry about. Custumers would be disappointed in stores of their mashine was available, but not in the color they want. And a black laptop would not stand out very much because most laptops are black with maybe some silver ornaments. There's a reason why there are no black earbuds (iPod headphones), people want to show they word they are cool and have an iPod. BUt maybe I am wrong about this and the Macbook will come in many colors just like the iPod Mini or the flower power iMacs and Clamshell Books. Maybe exchangable covers like old Nokia phones? :p

...for the "MacBook" and remaining MacBook Pro models. This also includes my guess that Apple will also make a 20" MBP.

The day Apple launch a 20" MacBook Pro is the day my credit card takes a trip to my local Apple Store.

I currently own a 17" 1.5ghz PPC PowerBook and would love a bigger laptop because I use my laptop as a desktop, but there are occasions where I require portability.

No i'm seriously gettin pissed because my magic cards are selling tommorow, and I wanna buy a macbook. Which tuesday will it be coming out?
