What are the chances of Apple releasing either a smaller macbook pro or ibook replacement - this month ?

I desperately need a mac, I am using a compaq to type this while my sister has taken my iBook.

"This month" as in March, or "this month" as in April? :p :D

I'd say April is your better bet. ;)

Sorry I meant April :)

Well I was hoping that apple would come out with a slew of new products to mark their 30th anniversary, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be happening.

Well me too, but there will be 2 models to justify the price range.

Lower $999 will undoubtably use the GMA950, but the $1500 will use either the x1600 or x1400 I suspect...

I'm not too sure. The Mac Mini, has two models and both use GMA 950s. Surely if they put a proper graphics card in the iBook/ MacBook, the Mini users would complain. After all, the Mac Minis were basically headless iBooks.

Have to agree, coupled with the fact that the 950 set was basically designed with OS compositing in mind (rather than games) and the iBook is targetted at "players" from what I see.

Add to that the "headless" iBook statement, which is true as far as I can see, and it seems pretty clear.

I think April is a much better bet, however it could be any point during Q2. With PowerMac (MacPro's) appearing for the dev. conf. in August, completing the "non-server" line up.

Just a guess, but I think Apple may want to string this out just a little....

I think that April is a good bet. I don't foresee a media event, but a silent update to the Apple store.

i think that it will be in May.

but, seeing that the last update is a long time ago in july, and seeing a macbook released, (a notebook) and an intel, (a computer based on the ibook) april is very plausible too, and that the next computer is an ibook.

Not sure if anyone has posted this on this thread before but just to give you an idea of how much each processor costs (Apple obviously gets a discount on this price):

Core Duo
T2600 - 2.16 GHz, 667 MHz FSB - $637
T2500 - 2 GHz, 667 MHz FSB - $423
T2400 - 1.83 GHz, 667 MHz FSB - $294
T2300 - 1.66 GHz, 667 MHz FSB - $241

Low-voltage Core Duo
L2400 - 1.66 GHz, 667 MHz FSB - $316
L2300 - 1.50 GHz, 667 MHz FSB - $284

Core Solo
T1300 - 1.66 GHz 667 MHz FSB - $209
(Yup, Intel do not make a Solo 1.5Ghz, Apple probably underclocked the one above for the Mini)

The thing to note here is that for a little bit more than the cost of a 1.5Ghz low-voltage Core Duo, Apple could use a 1.83Ghz Core Duo, and in the world of marketing, what sounds better? This is why I think ThinkSecret are wrong.

My prediction, and I'm working the pricing on the recent Google snapshot showing a lowered price...

MacBook Solo - $949/£679
1.5Ghz Core Solo
512MB DDR2 SDRAM
60GB 5,400rpm Hard Drive
GMA 950
Combo-Drive (4x Super -> $50/£40)
Front Row
iSight is a possibility but I'm unsure.

MacBook Duo - $1199/£849
1.66Ghz Core Duo
512MB DDR2 SDRAM
80GB 5,400rpm Hard Drive
GMA 950
4x SuperDrive
Front Row
iSight is a possibility but I'm unsure.

To BlizzardBomb and babyjennifer:

The price lists for Intel processors available to the public and the deals Intel has with Apple are very different things.

For all we know Apple may have a deal on the 1.5GHz Core Solo (T1200?) model that gives them a very favourable price on it, and the volume of that deal leaves no such processors available to the public. And even if that in particular is not the case, it certainly is the case that the deals between Apple and Intel can be very different from the deals available to others.

Yes, I know Apple have different prices as I said in the first sentence of my post :), and as far as I'm aware Intel don't make a 1.5Ghz Core Solo. Apple probably underclocked a 1.66Ghz down.
