I don't think there will be a smaller version of the PRO. I think the 13-inch MacBook will be the successor of both the 12 inch iBook and Powerbook (it will most likely be much faster than either model). And I think Legacy's specs sound pretty much on the money: The G4 iBook and MacMini have usually fallen under similar processor speeds.
But something has to fall in between the 1.66 Core-Duo MacBook and 1.83 Core-Duo MBP. The difference between $1299 and $1999 is just far too big. I'm guessing on another $1599 13.3" MacBook Pro with a low-voltage 1.66GHz Core-Duo or maybe even a 1.83GHz Core-Duo and a superior GPU. There just has to be something in between that will satisfy the Pros that are looking for something ultra portable.

Apple definitely needs a design change on the iBook...errr MacBook?

I would warmly welcome such a change, although as the day gets closer I lower my personal expectations.

I am a college student, and a Mac fan for a couple years now, even though I have never owned one. I have read many posts and have tried to keep up with the recent Apple systems. I am definetly ready to become a switcher. I am looking at the Macbook very heavily, but I was wondering about a few things. I like to play games, like Call of Duty, Halo and games that take up as much or more of my comp.(although games aren't extremely important, but it's nice to know that you can, and with a 128 gb vcard, you can) I also like to do a little photowork, which I figure mac has to be better than what I have now and do it faster. I know that office 2003 should work well under Rosetta, especially with a core duo. with one gb ram, probably all I need. I was going to get a Macbook when they came out, but honestly I only need it right before school, so I might as well wait until leopard comes out and also hope the price drops a little over a few months. The thing I did not want to wait for was mermon( sry bout my spelling) I have heard mixed predictions about 64 bit, and as speed is not extremely important for me, and as long as programs are written in 32 bit for a few years, I will be happy, basically I want to know that for the things I will use it for will 32 bit and the Mac be good for me

I appreciate any help

I am right about 32 bit being around awhile right?

I'd look for the Nano/iPod's Clear Plastic Over Color

One thing I am surprised has gone unnoticed so far:

The newest iPod and the Nano are both faced in *clear* plastic, over color underneath. This gives them an aggresive, deep profile which appeals to me as a photographer. It also gives you a surface you can polish without ruining the underlying color.

I would look for the new iBook to come in Black and White just like the Nano (the blacks have been very successful sellers), faced in the same kind of clear top. This will also 'square off' their profile considerably unless Apple rounds the corners - square looks industrial and cool as hell and I hope they do it.

Facing the bottom in metal a la the iPod would be a real coup, because that metal is damned touch to damage. I am surprised the MacBook Pros didn't look more like huge iPods and I think this is only a matter of time.

I was chatting with an online rep. from apple site and I asked him when the new macbook will be released, his(or it's) reply was I cannot release information on this unreleased product!

I thought that was kinda funny

Standard Apple faire...

This just in!!! Shard, you must have inside information, because I just got ahold of some imagery that is to be released from the Press when the MacBook is released, and wow is it sexy.

It is black AND white, and has a no-latch lid akin to the no-latch lid ID'd by the rumors of a magnetic lid. This thing is just too sexy... ;)

I actually have that model... 466Mhz G3 with 800x600 SVGA screen. DVD-ROM drive with 10 gig HD. I was the talk of my high school when I was the only kid dragging it around.

I later upgraded to a TiBook in college and gave the old iBook to my 'Rents, which they still use in their vacation home...

They've got to get into a new form factor for the iBook, er MacBook - and for the Mac Pro, IMHO. The iMac, Mac Mini and MacBook Pro are all pretty much the same as they were but with Intel inside. Seems to me that Apple is just rushing to get the Intel transition behind them at the expense of form factor. Sure the existing boxes are good. The iMac, and Mac Mini are state of the art. But I was hoping for more with the MacBook Pro. I will continue to wish for a new and exciting iBook/MacBook. I've already got almost enough in the bank. Bring it on Apple :D

What do you guys think of this for MacBook Predictions. I am pretty sure the iSight will be part of the MacBook simply because I do not see a MacBook Pro 13" being released and I think Apple is pushing the iSight to go idea in Notebooks to accord with their iChat software.

1. 'Solo' model. Given that MacMini retails for $599, an extra $400 used to add 13.3" TFT, Keyb/Trackpad and built-in iSight Camera. Aimed at the modest consumer eg; student who has good general demands and multimedia flexibility (ie iSight, HD playback etc)

$999 MacBook 13.3” Solo

Intel Core Solo 1.5Ghz Processor with 2MB L2 Cache
512MB DDR2 Memory (MAX 2GB)

Slot-loading Combo Drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW)
Built-in Airport Extreme with Bluetooth 2.0
FrontRow with Apple Remote
Built-in iSight camera

2. 'Duo' model. Again, NB MacMini retails for $799, so extra $100 on top of $400 as above provides room for discreet GPU. Aimed at demanding consumer after good overall performance and on-the-go gaming.

If these were the specs why would anyone buy the iBook over the MacBook. If they are the same price, and the MacBook has a nicer enclosure, the iBook would be pointless. If the MacBook was $1599, and had a slightly better graphics card or some other feature, both may sell.

Exactly. and people are being too generous with pricing. It will more than likely be

$999-1099 for a 1.5 solo, 13.3" 40gb HD, 512mb ram, Combo & GMA 950
$1599 for a 1.6 duo, 13.3" 80gb, 512mb ram, Superdrive & X1600 128mb

This covers the bottom end replacing current ibook and 12" powerbook range.

Intel Core Duo: 31W

Low Voltage Duo: 15W
Ultra Low Voltage Duo: 9W
Ultra Low Voltage Solo: 5.5W

I think Ultra Low Voltage processors are not out yet. due in April, I believe.

32bit vs 64bit

Should I be concerned that the intel chips being used in the macs are 32 bit and not 64 bit?

OSX on the G5 was 64bit, so what happens to it on 32bit CPUs?

Presumably, also, intel will move to 64bit versions of all their cores (in the world of PC's, this is becoming an issue for them). Will apple then release iMac's, in say, 12 months time, with 64 bit versions?

It doesnt really worry me for media centre use in a mac mini, or even in my home/play computer (which'll be a 20" iMac) - but my work PC spends its entire life running java apps at full volume - the extra oomph will be useful.

I'm hoping they offer a $1299-$1399 non-Pro MacBook with a Core Duo, GMA 950 graphics, and SuperDrive...

I was wondering the same thing, but the chips may not get released until early '07, and many apps are going to use 32 bit for a long time, I believe that it would be worth buying since the programs will still use 32 bit for some time, but if the speed is just killing you, then by all means wait it out.

Noticed that Dell are selling core duo laptops with the X1400 with shipping 3-4 weeks for that option graphics. Could this be the graphics card in the top line macbook? it would also mean we wont hear about the machines shipping till may... sounds plausible...

I have a sneaking suspicion that the new iBooks will have that integrated graphics chip that the minis now have...

It won't bother me too much if the screen is widescreen and the resolution is upped a notch.

As soon as the thing is annouced in whatever form, I'll be buying one.

It's only right and proper - It took incredible amounts of self-control not to buy a Macbook Pro when I was in New York last week - simply down to the fact I was waiting to see what/if/when the iBooks are released.

Apple better not let me down...

Well me too, but there will be 2 models to justify the price range.

Lower $999 will undoubtably use the GMA950, but the $1500 will use either the x1600 or x1400 I suspect...

Hopefully you'll be spot on there. Although I wouldn''t be suprised for a middle range version as well.

I'm very interested to see what the screens are going to be like though.
