Which are still a huge overkill for the vast majority of people.

'zactly - But I do agree they could do a Mac pro mini version that is about $2K with 1 GPU and 4 core i7 or whatever.

But it's a new form factor and will only be high end.

But hell the current mac mini late 2012 (12674 on geek bench) beats a 2008 mac pro 8 3.0 on CPU (11950)

Most of the time people don't even know what they want this power for!?

the current mac pro would have been 8th most powerful supercomputer in 2003... That is insane... even a iPhone 5s beats the #1 supercomputer of about 1997...

It's a tool to do work - if you don't make money with it then you probably don't need it. If you game and must use a mac you'd be spending a lot on it even if you got a PC.

I agree. I think if you don't earn enough revenue to pay off a Mac Pro in a reasonable amount of time then you don't need what a Mac Pro has to offer. Maybe a good iMac or Mini server would be better for your business.

I can't use a Mac for business. I want one for personal use. Unfortunately the choices are really bad, especially now that some moron at Apple started thinking that an iMac needs to be really thin.

With an option to choose between the cheese grater mac or the pneumatic tube shuttlecock mac I'd choose the cheese grater because of the lower internal peripheral and pcix card costs and the secure containment box. Even if it ment slower performance.

Great news! Just posted about the next upgrade MacPro and someone slammed me saying will have to wait over a year! Well he'll yea, bring it baby ! To be honest , I was posting about Broadwell processors and was looking to purchase when that processor became available! This is NOT Broadwell but might be a good time to jump in!

You make good points and this is all perspective ! There is 100 + core that have been available for years but not for consumer! But will be the norm in the future!
I mean, imagine a 100(even50 core) MacPro? That would be the last comp for the rest of my life? Unless i live another 60yrs then I my need to upgrade to the new K-core comp:eek:weeeeee doggie!!!!,

Its good to be back on track with Mac Pro rumors. Its been a long and anxious road waiting for this new Mac Pro and its good to see rumors about the second gen already.:)

Previous Gen Mac Pro had an core i7 base model, now that intel Released the X99 chipset now its plausible another base MacPro With Haswell-E i7, and desktop Class GPU(s), nVidia? AMD?

Has sense, but i bet no update this Year on Mac Pro, or at least no new Mac Pro at Keynote, maybe just a Silent Apple Store Update some tuesday...

Let me know when you run GeekBench for a living,

I have both of those machines and the Mini would burn to a crisp trying to keep up with the MacPro.

I do every day. I have 4 mac minis as a 3d render farm. Sitting there churning way pretty much 24/7 - they are in a garage so do keep cool. But do agree they are no good at actually running a 3D app. Crappy Graphics really. The CPU can sit there at 100% all day long.

Point is 95% of people won't even outrun a mac mini for most work. I know a pro photographer that uses mini happily day to day. Mainly so he can use a Matt monitor.

Took a look at the chips in the list. Seems that clock speeds are staying the same, or going up or down by 0.1 or 0.2GHz. And prices are going up. There also seems to be no power savings, even though Haswell paved the way for massive power savings in mobile parts.

So prices up, clock speeds the same. Any ideas on how IPC is increased over Ivy Bridge? If we get only a 5-10% increase in IPC then the increased costs and TDP aren't all that compelling. It seems the real tasty bit is the DDR4 and whatever new GPUs we get?

Write to them and ask them to make it thicker then ;)

Why does it NEED to be as thick as before?

Sorry you can't use a Mac for your Business. Would like to know what you do that only Windows can serve your needs! As for the thinness of the iMac ( I'm a MacPro owner) why is this a problem? Thanks!

Apple take cash these days still? Wow. I know they don't for iPhones.

Really? I paid for all my Macs (iBook, iMac, MacBook, 2 MacBook Pros, iPad mini, iPhone) in cash, but then again I have no Apple Store in my town and the Apple resellers in my town sell me Apple hardware 50 to 200 € cheaper than Apple would.

I like cash, since it is more anonymous.

Previous Gen Mac Pro had an core i7 base model

The previous generation Mac Pro from 2012 had Nehalem and Westmere Xeon based CPUs:

Give me a simple tower instead - and no second GPU

Now, if they'd make a model which ditched the altogether unnecessary (and very expensive) second GPU, I *might* think about one of these instead of a Hackintosh once my 2009 8-core needs replacement. (And yes, when I'm using the computer for its main purpose [music], all 16 virtual cores are in use.) Even better would be a simple tower machine with room for internal storage and a card or two without need for exotic breakout boxes or external enclosures; no need for "innovation" in the professional form-factor, thank you very much.

The idea of the Mac Pro getting yearly updates is a bit of an anachronism.

But who knows. Maybe Apple's going retro and brining back some old ways of doing things.

One can hope.

If there are better parts available on the market, why not? It's not like slotting in an updated processor will necessitate a complete redesign of the Mac Pro form factor.

Mini

Isn't that the Mac Mini?

Why can't they make a desktop tower for normal people? ****, solder in the parts and weld the box shut if you have to, but don't make me buy a new friggin 27" display every time I want to get a new computer.

I don't know how excited I'd get just yet. All this "rumor" points to is potential parts becoming available, not any actual leak or info regarding the Mac Pro specifically.

IF they will use Nvidia Maxwell GPU's rather than AMD ones, which seems very likely, They will not have to tune them down a bit.

What on earth makes you think that seems likely? Seems to me Apple hitched their wagon to OpenCL, hence their choice of AMD in the first place.

There was a time when Intel provided Apple with shipments of CPUs in advance of Intel's own announcement, giving Apple a one-up marketing coup.

I'm pretty sure that only happened once, and was more of a stars aligning thing rather than Apple having some special relationship with Intel.

In other words, a dying paradigm that consumers have little interest in.

What computer nerds need to understand (and I'm one of them) is that nerd needs != consumer needs.

This. Geeks wanting an expandable machine to tinker are in the minority. Most people want a powerful machine that will just boot and run, and the current MacBooks and iMacs allow this.

The vast majority are also going towards mobile devices at the same time, the reign of the desktop is over. Although more expensive, The current 15" rMBPs already contain as much performance as a mid level iMac. Most people sadly simply don't need a headless iMac. I suspect the newly redesigned Mac mini will offer a decent spec boost, possibly filling this void in the line.
