Intel Provides early 'Montevina'-Like Technology to iMac

I did read the whole thread but thanks for the attitude.

Perhaps you should look at the various different references related to the subject and then not answer my post if you find it irritating.

I asked a simple question, which you have no obligation to reply to.

But i do appreciate it being your last time!

I'm sorry about my attitude, but this has been talked about 3 times in the last 3 pages of this thread. I just try to read the last five pages of a thread if I want to ask something about the issue of the thread. It's not hard.

It is a good upgrade as I just ordered the 3.06Ghz model with 4 gigs of RAM. Guess what, my dual 2.0Ghz G5 died last night. A perfect timing?

do not buy the 4 gig of ram get the two gig and buy the 4 gig from kingston for a hundred dollars

Or it could be no worse than the previous models.

Instead of jumping to conclusions, why not just ask one of the people who bought one?

So for those who bought one, particularly the two top speeds, how is the noise and the heat?

very warm on top to the touch. very quiet. no noise. played 3d games for about 2 hours. no sounds of fans.

3.06 24" imac. bought on monday.

I hear you. I planned to get 3rd party RAM from OWC or transintl.com, but lately found out I opt-in for the RAM upgrade from Apple. I could end up saving $70 or something for not getting from Apple. Oh well.... ;)

I hope not! I saw a powerbook g3 pismo at a convention a few months ago (when apple's still looked ugly :O). I thought it was a pc but then i saw os x on the dim screen and the upside down logo on the back. that thing is at least 7 years old and it looked like the earlier models too!
Slightly ot:
I still use my g3 lombard (looks just like the prismo except no FireWire and 333mhz instead of 400 and you have to use a PCMCIA wireless card no airport) on a daily basis to browse the Internet. Firefox is suprisingly snappy - flash even works decently.

Slightly back on topic:
anyone know how well that 8800 will drive a second display in fcp?

What exactly does that mean?

I remember that there were some issues with the 24" iMac Lcd's in that they weren't as good as the 20's or was it the other way around?

I have to decided tween the two. :)

Of course there is also the overclocked CPU's and heat issues, the posts seem to be going back and forth, on it.

It means the 20" is crap, so your choice should be easy.
Heat issues? What heat issues? It's just speculation.

I just got a new 20" iMac (2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, Radeon 2600HD Pro) delivered on Monday - UPS delivered it about 2pm, and the updated iMacs were announced around the same sort of time. Oh well!

I spoke to someone at Apple who said I could return it and exchange it but to be honest I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of getting it collected and a new one sent out - i'd waited long enough and I just wanted to USE it :) The graphics (which were the only sticking point for me with the iMac) were not upgraded on the model I could afford and I was sure that it would still be a superb machine anyway so I decided to open it up and just use it... and boy is it an improvement over my old Mac Mini (1.66GHz Core Duo). I don't regret not sending it back at all - it's superb.

I just coughed up the $20 to bring the RAM up to 2GB and i'm happy with my purchase. The extra FSB would have been nice and the extra 260MHz per core, but looking at how good resale values are of the iMacs anyway I might just keep it for a year and save like hell, and then spring for a 24" top of the line model next year some time..?

So just to be clear - If I get an iMac w/ the standard 2 GB of RAM today, and in 2 yrs I want to upgrade to 4 GB... will the apple store ppl install any RAM I choose to buy for it??

If so, how much does that cost?

Installing RAM on the iMac is really easy, so I wouldn't bother with having them do it if you buy it somewhere else. There is one panel on the whole machine that opens. Get a screwdriver, open the panel, stick the RAM in, close it up and you're done.

went to Best Buy today and picked up the 24" 2.8 GHZ model
Totally excited about typing on this MASSIVE screen :)

Thats how I feel when I type on this:

What's that giant cheese grater doing on top of your desk? :p

I don't understand why people put towers on top of the desk instead of under or beside the desk. I want to free up the space, and move the fan/disk noise a little further away from my ears.

If I had a Mac Pro, I'd put it in front of the monitor.

LMFAO!
I'm too scared to put it under my desk! Its going to be on the rug and I'm also afraid of not having enough airflow

I like the novel wheel mouse at the bottom right.... Must be touch screen too - no keyboard.

lol@wheel mouse - thats a tape dispenser.
The wireless keyboard is sort of odd too!

My GF said you have this HUGE Tower with HUGE Monitor and a tiny ittybitty keyboard and white mouse - kinda doesnt match!

I punched her in the face after that..:p

Any reason for concern?

OK, so I've been reading this thread after waiting for the new iMacs to appear so I can replace my iMac G5 that has been limping along for some time...
and now I'm worried.

I don't want to buy a refurbished model though the price does seem attractive. The newly "obsolete" iMacs don't show enough of a price drop to tempt me. But what's with this hybrid Montevina model? I see words like "overclocked," "run hotter," "fan noise" being bandied about and I think, "The only fan noise I want to hear is the applause of friends and family when they see (not hear) my shiny new iMac!"

Is there any reason to be concerned that this speed bump iMac is going to be a big f**king pothole in the smooth path of previous upgrades? Is there much likelihood that this stopgap pairing of parts will result in creating a real lemon? I need to upgrade but I don't want to end up wishing that I spent my money on proven technology.
