Wow, great deal at MacMall.

For $1849, you can get a 24-inch white iMac with a 2.33 GHz processor, and at the Apple store you get a 24-inch Al iMac with a 2.8 GHz processor, twice the RAM, and a bigger HD for $1799. Ooh, wait...you get a crappy printer and Parallels at MacMall too.

I suppose I feel bad for retailers stuck with old inventory, but I feel worse for the ignorant schmucks they sucker into these "deals."

Hey Now. I just bought my new 2.4ghz 2gb, 250gb HD Macbook from MacMall 2 weeks ago. I could not be happier. It was cheaper to buy the pre-config Parallels and Xp then to buy it separately and do it myself. Plus they shipped it same day, and it was here in no time.

the price difference is really the parallels and the XP. they only really charge you for the parallels.

i miss power PC
all theses Intel code names confuse the hell out of me:confused:
is this version faster that the older one?
yes ?
that's all i really need to know

I've been waiting for this update for a while now, and I'm thinking of getting the low end model. Because of the exchange rate or something it's only €999 in the Netherlands. It's actually cheaper than the previous model!
Now the downside: All the update does for the low end model is cpu, fsb and L2. No HD,memory or graphics updates! I'm hoping they did fix the 20" screen though(see wikipedia)

Hi,

This is my 1st post ...
I'm planning to get a 20" @ 2,66 but I would like to know if the difference between the LCD's (TN?!) from 20" to 24" is relevant and visible for an average user like me (switcher)?
I'll be using mainly for web, email, webdesign, image editing, personal photos and movies.

What are the recommended work distance for a 24" model? I usually work at 0,6mt.

Thanks

i want a new iMac!!!!! Although my 20" iMac G5 2.0 ghz (ambient light sensor) is still chugging along fine.... but still... my machine is almost 3 years old!

i want vm fusion!

Wow, this is a much better update than I was expecting! Certainly a step in the right direction by Apple to differentiate themselves from the PC market.

I was waiting on a new mini but the prices for the previous gen iMacs appear to be quite the sweet deal. I realize ordering from the refurb section doesn't guarantee a "new" machine but its worth it at those prices. A 2.8 Extreme 24" for $1600? Yes, please :D

the Apple returb Aluminum 24" iMac for $1399 and the 24" Extreme for $1599 are good deals.

Just pulled the trigger on the 2.8 24" Extreme. I've been eying it for about a month now. The combination of my tax return arriving in my account and the price dropping a couple hundred was just too much for me to pass up. :D

With this special revision of SR, Apple could go all the way until Nehalem comes to light.

The quad-core mobile Penryn is due this September so there is no reason to think the iMac will not get it, and Montevina, in its next update. This will allow the iMac to jump to the Nehalem processor on the Calpella platform Q2 2009.

How would using Cantiga allow Apple to move to Capella?

I picked up a 2.8Ghz 24" last night, and it seems sweet. I haven't had a chance to do much yet, but it doesn't seem to be noisy or hot.

why on a Monday?

I think it is a great upgrade, I just wonder why it didn't come on a Tuesday and it came on a Monday. But if I didn't need portability then I would defiantly get one.

i bought my 3.06 yesterday. Good machine. Gets very warm but stays very quiet. In any event, these processors are overclocked peryns.

Peryns were marketed as low heat, battery saving processors that give you the same performance as meroms.

Well, low heat and battery savings don't mean much to imacs, so...intel just overclocked them since they had room by increasing wattage and clock mutipliers/bus speeds.

You can always sell it on e-bay and someone would have bought your 2GB kit.

125 USD for RAM, 50-60USD back from ebay sale, gives you 75 bucks for a 4GB kit. You have spent $200... I do not see an environmentally good thing here.

On the other hand he did whatever he wanted with his money and shared the experience with us and YOU are being judgemental about it.

Keep in mind by Apple lowering the margins on memory VERY SUBSTANTIALLY, many more folks like him are simply buying RAM from Apple at the time of the purchase. It lowers the lag time to RAM upgrade from your proposed actions, saves all the transportation, buy and sell activity and associated shipping activity you propose, and most importantly of all, is less stressful of an experience on a variety of levels. It is LESS WORK.

Let him enjoy his $100 extra expense in exchange for LESS WORK. Do not make it your personal mission to "wreck his tude". Live and let live.

Be in harmony with the world around. Oops, now I am starting to sound like Steve Jobs! :)

MacMall rebates? Don't bet on it

The original article cited Mac Mall rebates as some reason to buy from them. Don't count on getting them, though.

I bought my first MacBook last summer from them and there were four rebates in force for the things that I bought. *They* emailed me the coupons while I was on the phone with them placing the order. I followed their instructions *to the letter* and furnished copies of everything that was request. TWO of the rebates were answered with a letter from them stating that they did not recognize the rebate program. After that, I surfed the web to find that MacMall is about 50% on actually honoring rebates.

Buy your Mac on technical justification wherever you buy it from. Buy it from MacMall if it's a good deal on its own. But *don't* count on actually getting a rebate from *them.* Me, I'm never buying squat from them again. Once bitten, twice shy..

How would using Cantiga allow Apple to move to Capella?
I do not understand your question. Cantiga is the code-name for the Intel Mobile 45 Express chipset that is part of Montevina, which is the code-name for the 5th generation Centrino platform. Calpella is the code-name for the 6th generation Centrino platform and it will start off with Nehalem processors.

Oh blasphemy! Macs last forever - they never die. I keep hearing that PCs are disposable, and Macs are extremely high quality and never stop. ;)

Did you check that the power cord is connected? Surely Macs aren't becoming disposable items too....

haha... I will go back and examine it after I received my iMac. However, I do find older Macs more reliable. My PowerMac 6100/60 and Classic still work.

Sounds like you got a 'special update' from the mothership :)apple:).

I love that. In fact, I really need to upgrade my Mac. The 3.06Ghz iMac is perfect.

Good to hear that. I can't wait to receive mine.

Interesting you post that. I never send in rebate forms. Am I losing money, yeah probably but of all the rebate forms I ever sent in, I only got one check from HP a number of years ago and that was on a Win98 Mini tower. Coincidently, when I bought I my second HP machine 3 years ago, I never did see that rebate check. I shop around on the best price for what I can get, and never count of rebate checks. that is why I never did send in the rebate form that Macmall sent with my new Macbook. They had the lowest price for what I needed, preconfigured, and that was enough. I got my applecare warrenty, and so far have been pretty happy with my machine.

But you said Cantiga would allow Apple to transition to Nehalem. I was asking how that was the case. Bolding below is mine. That part is what I was questioning.

Hi

Could you please inform us on the CPU of your 2.8Ghz iMac? There are rumors that only the 3.06Ghz version is still Santa Rosa, the rest of the line being Montevina.

Could you install Windows with CPU-Z and GPU-z screenshots?
