I predict this is true. They'll make battery power wireless then it will become cloud-based and then you'll have to subscribe if you "need" longer than the 10 minutes of local battery. Gotta love the subscription model...

Eventually the charging mechanism may be wireless, or a platform instead of a plug-in, but the batteries will remain. Overall, the battery technology will improve giving more power in a lighter battery, and the consumption by the processor+GPU will be less, with greater performance overall, as we see here. You will get like a week of use out of your laptop without having to charge it once, and standby will last 3 months.

I can't wait to upgrade my 2010 MBP to a late 2015 rMBP with Skylake. BRING IT!!!!

Me too! Same exact situation. The '10 was a huge improvement over the previous model and has held up really well. Definitely was a great time to buy. Same goes for the next model -- it's good to have waited....

OpenGL isn't the problem, OS X does support it fine or games and tools won't work period. It's the crappy graphic drivers Apple work on that slows down OpenGL. Apple won't let GPU vendors release their own drivers.

However, Metal should improve this a lot by removing a lot of the complexity of the graphic drivers and pushes it on the content providers, rather than the vendors.

This does mean Apple will never fix the OpenGL drivers and everyone will have to move to Metal instead.

GPU vendors write their own OS X drivers

Cool. 2016 is probably my upgrade year for my iMac. Metal and the high end video card should allow for some decent native gaming. But mainly I'm looking forward to reading on the Retina screen.

time for a redesign. i'm guessing apple released the force touch touchpad on the rmbp models as a testing period for a re-design. the added functionality isn't that impressive yet and the +5% battery is like meh. gimme redesign or gimme death!

PLEASE SHIP, AND APPLE PLEASE GET NEW MACHINES OUT ASAP! AND PLEASE INCORPORATE THUNDERBOLT 3 ACROSS THE BOARD!

Sorry for the caps, it's just that this is subject I feel very strongly about, and I'll spend money once this happens.

I'm so bored of the argument "they aren't gaming Laptops", why not? Why wouldn't Mac users be able to play games? Why are you paying more for less? That argument annoys me as it's ********, I can pay half as much on Windows and get a more capable machine. So what if it isn't made of metal... whocares, I'd rather have functionality thanx.

I wouldn't go that far. There's really nothing special about Skylake, it's just the next iteration of ever-improving processors.

Contextually, we have been waiting for any update for quite a while for certain machines, and between the Broadwell delay, and the fact that an even better setup (that may also offer Thunderbolt 3/USB-C/3.1 convergence, which is pretty sick if you ask me) seems to be just a little further out... I think it's fair to say Skylake is a bigger deal than maybe the average bump.

The biggest thing about those skylake chips will be the 80% lower silicon power on the quad core H chips.
That means they basically come down to U series SoC power. For Windows quad core notebooks that means they will make huge jumps in battery life. For the MBP it should still helps some with real battery life.
Otherwise it is like 10% extra performance that is barely more than the mid haswell stepping change from 2.3 to 2.5Ghz delivered. Graphics should be more power efficient but I don't think in pure speed it will change much except on the fastest GT4e version.

Ooh! The nerd in me is aroused!

I can't wait to see generation 2 of the Retina MacBook!

THUNDERBOLT 3 BABY!!! Up to 40Gbit Thunderbolt, plus USB 3.1, plus DisplayPort 1.2, all through one USB Type-C port. The cable to end all cables! heheheh

I have a gen 1 12" rMB but figured the next rev would have a much better-utilized port setup. When I saw the TB3/USB3.1 announcement, I figured that the single port on the rMB will get a lot more useful once it becomes one of those suckers. I'll replace the gen 1 with one of those if it emerges, even if that's soon. Probably next year though. :(

Personally, I'm bored of people discussing gaming on computers like it's the main purpose of a computer. I never gamed on a PC ever, because I'm simply not interested in that kind of stuff at all. I know you can't imagine that, but I just don't care.

My point was your use of Lulz is the kind of thing that makes you come off like a 14 year old girl. If you want people to take you serious, use proper English!

You could stand to learn how to use an adverb yourself. "Take you seriously" would be the proper way of saying it.

Just bought my 2015 rMBP. Nerts. :(
Wouldn't worry unless you got an integrated graphics only Mac. The advances by Nvidia on power savings really pushes In Intel in a corner and these performance gains are nowhere near what was promised. Even though all the rMBP have gotten cheaper, you are still looking at minimum $2300 purchase for A/V work on mobile compute platform.

Just put a 1TB Samsung Evo 850 SSD into my mid 2012 MBP and 16GB of ram in it. It's blazing fast now, so I think I'm good for another 4 years :)

The main use case is to code. Code for a game. Then play the game. Chat about the game. View video trailers of the game based movie. Browser Amazon to buy the game. Search for cheat codes or tips.

And the most important use case: log in to macrumors forums and post to thread mainly about games to complain about games.

nobody cares about this but it would be cool with skylake if we could get the dark gray and gold color laptops on the retina macbook pro line.

good for you? want a shiny medal?

there are hundreds of uses of computers. Not all just yours. So basically your entire post reads

"I dont like gaming so stop talking about gaming on a site that I read"

how about no. you don't have to read it. COmputers are also used for gaming. So talking about CPU performance, directly relates to game performance, and therefore, ipso facto, ergo dergo, timey wimey? we have every right to talk about gaming when talking about computer performance.

I don't judge you for not gaming. HOw dare you judge us for gaming.
