Wow, erm yeah, give me a reason to upgrade this 1st generation and I might get it, of course, at a good price.

Statements such as these really make me want to laugh. As if there weren't ANY reasons to upgrade to EACH new iPhone version. People such as these undoubtedly think they are so smart compared to the rest of us idiots.

I plan to by a new phone each year they come out. And, if I have to will pay full retail like I did with the GS, thanks to AT & T.

3.2 vs 4.0

Oh noes.

If the new iPhone/iPod touch is in the 3.2 SDK, then does this mean 3.2 is not iPad only, and the new models may ship with 3.2?

Look like 4.0 is a long way away.

May be the iPad will be released with 3.2 at the end of March and when the new iPhone is released in June-July, both iPad and iPhone will have 4.0

I said before the holidays that Apple would do a quick refresh to add the lost camera to the iPod Touch after the new year! They wouldn't do it too soon because all the people that bought them for Christmas would be PISSED! But they also, won't wait an entire year just to pop a camera in it when it was intended last time anyway.

Now can they please get the camera that we all know is already worked in on the iPad before its release as well!

Also Apple, you need to start updating the iPhone on a 6-9 month cycle now or else you are going to be getting behind the competition! One year isn't going to cut it anymore!

I agree....Update every 6 months sounds more practical..

Larger screen

I wonder if the iPhone and iPod Touch are headed for larger screens--the Dell Mini 5 is (supposedly) coming out soon with a pretty nice sized screen. An iPod Touch with that size screen as an option might be enough to convince me to get one.

They need to update with 4" screens for iPod touch and iPhone in June-July....It would be great...I saw a larger iPhone screen several months ago in one of the forums ...which was fake...I am sure

No way Mac . . behind the comp? Never. I am still mad about that tablet though.

Sarcasm? I LOVE my iPhone, but it is 2010 and even the 3Gs still only has a 480x320 display! There is WAY too much competition now to only update once a year. The other phone makers are cranking out model after model and after model all year long and Apple's hardware specs are starting to look dated in comparison!

I know the iPhone still has lots of good hardware and will be great this summer, but the iPhone will need to be on a cycle more like the Macs. Even if they do a 9-month cycle it would help a lot! You have to balance being up to date and not fragmenting the product line and OS. Apple has done a pretty good job of that so far, they just need to crank it up a notch now. Especially with the iPad out and having the App Store now. The App Store is becoming more fragmented and Apple needs to really refine that and keep things smooth for the end-user! It is NOWHERE NEAR the Android MESS, but we want to keep it that way is the point!

Mmm wait a sec. We were all hoping for multitasking and other new things at the launch of the iPad. But what if Apple wanted to put all those new stuff in the 4.0 update. The X.0 update always comes around june, so he couldn't show those new software features this month.

I think 4.0 will run on all devices (iPod touch, iPhone and iPad) and will have lots of features we had hoped to see this month. Plus the iPod touch and iPhone will have a new chip, like the one of the iPad. That's what Jobs meant with big updates.

I think that an A4 in the next iPhone is a given. Apple have invested the engineering effort in designing the A4 so why give away margin to Samsug (or Qualcomm or whoever) when they can contract directly with a fabricator. Also, they can not only avoid the Samsung design premium but also reduce the cost further by binning the current iPad A4 production (binning in the semiconductor industry is the process of testing a part to see of it performs at the desired frequency and/or power requirement and, if it fails to hit the target spec, then re-classify it as a lower speed part.

For me it's battery life that is key. I'm 99% certain that the A4 in the next iPhone will be downclocked (hence my comment above which makes binning an option). Apple can do this because the iPhone is pushing far fewer pixels than the iPad so can maintain percieved performance at a lower clock speed. That is why I'm really on the fence as far as waiting until June/July is concerned before buying my first iPhone.

From the way Steve-o talked at the town hall meeting, Apple will be updating so often that the competitors will lose control of their bladders.

I wouldn't be surprised if they slam out a software upgrade each time the competition opens their mouth to speak. Hardware upgrades less frequently due to the longer cycle of carrier contracts...unless AT&T begins to also embrace pay-as-you-go for users.

As for the discussions regarding new phones with different size (five inch, or seven inch) screens, keep in mind the aspect ratio needed to keep the software from fracturing like crazy. It would be interesting to see a slightly larger screen with a lot denser pixils, so one could get a finer resolution display.

Shocking...:sarcasm:

Come on, guys. We already know this. Lol. We all know 4.0 is coming soon, along with a new iPhone.

likely the codename of the next iPhone (previous versions were called the M68, N82, and N88).

Sounds like a "Get Smart" episode...

"Agent 86? Yes, Agent 99... Did you steal the new Apple iPad?"

Agent 86: "Missed it by that much!" :D

No Flash?

I don't understand Jobs position re: flash. The Iphone does not have it and neither does the Ipad . I know there is no 'love' between Apple and Adobe, but flash is the standard. He is limiting us re: not embracing flash. It is one thing to be stubborn re: company vs. another company, but Jobs is shooting the Apple mobile platforms in the foot by not having flash.

Verizon sold 1 million Motorola Droids in just 6 weeks in 2009 and it had the 'promise' of flash in the 1st quarter of 2010. Google is embracing flash. 'Pride' has led to the downfall of some great companies in IT that were thought to be impervious, among them Compaq (horrible management decisions) and they are more of less a footnote inside HP.

I just really hope that the new model will have a slightly larger screen. It's just a tad too small, the current model could hold a larger screen with a thinner bezel, and I wouldn't even mind if they made the whole phone 20% wider and higher yet thinner. If they made it bigger AND with a smaller bezel that would allow the screen size to be increased by quite a bit. Front facing camera seems unlikely since it would completely invalidate the iPad since it doesn't have one.

Based on Apple's recent financial performance, they are not shooting themselves by leaving Flash out of their mobile devices. You know that the iPhone and iPod touch sell well, yes?

The primary argument from Apple is that Flash is so resource intensive that it decreases performance and battery life.

Interestingly, the Mozilla Foundation dropped Flash support from Firefox Mobile just before it shipped for the Maemo platform for similar reasons.

While I recognize the pros and cons of Flash, I can also understand Apple's (and Mozilla's) argument that the cons outweigh the pros on mobile platforms.

With a $20+ upgrade tax? they did it before and that's why I tell people to at least wait until the Ipad ships with the 4.0 os.

Likely scenario:
WiFi-only iPad: $20 "tax"
WiFi and 3G iPad: Free

They don't need to charge for updates anymore. Sarbannes-Oxley was modified last year to remove the need for subscription accounting of the variety that Apple was doing. Does that mean they won't charge for OS 4.0? Who knows. But it certainly means they don't have to charge like they have been doing.

Here's a good read: Inside Apple's iPhone Subscription Accounting Changes

There used to be times when an Apple user was proud of the fact that an upgrade wasn't needed as often as in the normal PC world ;)

Anyways 1 year is more than reasonable. People seem to forget that something has to be innovated, planned and produced. 1 year is a hell of a short period in my opinion.

Not when you are a global, fortune 500 company with the best and brightest engineers in the world. Apple is working on the 5G iphone now so it's not really just 1 year
