Hey all,

Does the iPad 3G REQUIRE a 3G signal, or can it work from 2G and Cell signals? Like the iPhone?

I live in a part of England where there is no 3G coverage for several miles, and it's not often I need to go to the City....

Obviously I have my Wireless at home, but when I go out, or ride in the car etc, I'd like to be connected..

It should work on GPRS, EDGE and 3G like the iPhone.

iPad pricing in Japan. 3G model SIM locked!

Here is the pricing for Japan in English:

http://mobileinjapan.com/2010/05/08/softbank-reveals-ipad-and-3g-data-pricing-for-japan/

It's a bit more complex than elsewhere (but prices are quite competitive when compared in USD).

However, the 3G model will be SIM locked, contrary to Steve Jobs promise:

http://mobileinjapan.com/2010/05/10/apple-and-softbank-keep-ipad-sim-locked-in-japan/

Basically, the operator gets a sweet deal. Japan users won't be able to switch to another carrier (DoCoMo just bailed on its plan to release microSIMs) and Softbank won't sell plans for imported iPads. With the tiny subsidy, that's good for revenue.

But a lot of people are complaining. Just check the chatter online...

hi O2..

I have an iPhone I'm paying 7.50 for per month for UNLIMITED data. Please try and replicate something similar in a stand alone package

Thanks

(these prices are pushing me away from getting an iPad :()

I'll probably get a WiFi iPad and get MyWi for my recently jailbroken iPhone and not feel bad about it because Fido offers free tethering, but you can't tether an iPhone and an iPad for whatever reason.

I was hoping this is a one time fee.

This is retarded. You pay for a service that provides DATA, it should be independent on the numebr of devices you chose to have it on. If i want a 3G enabled netbook, a different tablet and another second phone, why the hell do I have to pay for separate plans. My plan should not be tied to my device it should be separate and allowed to move from one device to the next.

I am writing the Canadian Government on this issue immediately since it is retarded. We are getting ripped off. They gave me 6Gb a month let me use it how I wish rather than stickin it to me twice. BS, thats what this is

How long have you lived in Canada? What did you think was going to happen? i thought it would be worse than this actually.....

It's no more retarded than owning more than one car and having to pay insurance for each of them. In other words, it's not retarded.

I wish they could just give it for free for a year to all 6GB users :) I think I have a year left. If they give me a hard time, Ill run the contract out and move on.

While I can see your point, carriers have been charging 15 bucks per month to allow you to share existing buckets of voice minutes with another phone without providing any extra minutes in Canada so 20 isn't unreasonable, but, i would like to pay the 20 bucks without having to keep it activated. As for most of the places I go, they have free Wi-Fi. I will probably buy the 3G just for the convenience of the location based functionality that you don't get with the Wi-Fi model.

Cheers,

A

Well just because we expect it doesn't mean we don't have the right to be pissed off and complain! Besides, its a prerequisite for this forum to be a complainer ;)
Anyways, if its an extra $20 a month onto my existing $30 for 6 GB iPhone data plan, I will NOT be buying one. When will I be using my iPhone's 3G simultaneously with my iPad's? NEVER. Duh!

Screw Rogers. If I ever got an iPad I'd be tethering. I already have a data plan for my phone, so I don't need another.

Canada is not as terrible as it could have been. As long as it stays contract free, they might have me...

Likewise. Has anyone confirmed that Canada is contract free?

It doesn't state a contract is required but it doesn't state its contract free either.

I want to confirm before I make my decision because I'm used to the carriers here giving us the short end of the stick.

Is it SIM locked?

Rogers has pulled 'Add An iPad Option'

Apple and Softbank Keep iPad SIM Locked in Japan

This bad news apply not only to Apple customers in Japan but to all iPad owners who plan in coming to this country, because you will not be able to get an iPad compatible micro-SIM from Softbank if you do not purchase an iPad from them.

It's disappointing to read about the plans available for international customers.

I don't understand why they are so much more expensive than AT&T. I would think that since these carriers have a smaller footprint of land to cover, that their prices would be LESS than ours in the USA...

Are the voice plans cheaper over there so it balances out or something?

All these plans are terrible.

UNLIMITED TIME: What I'd really like to see is a service that charges a reasonable price for a certain number of Bytes. The Bytes should not expire at all (well, maybe after a year or two). When you use up those Bytes, then you re-up (or not). Moreover, the service should offer global coverage (this requires the service to contract with local providers) at no extra cost.

UNLIMITED DATA: An alternative would be a service that charges a reasonable price for a certain number of minutes. There would be no limit to the amount of data and the minutes should not expire at all (again, perhaps after a year or two). When you use up those minutes, then you re-up (or not). As above, the service should offer global coverage at no extra cost. [Its not clear this alternative is feasible, as I'm not sure how minutes would be counted.]

UNLIMITED TIME/DATA: The ultimate service just gives you a periodic (daily/weekly/monthly) charge without any limits on usage for a reasonable price. As above, the service should offer global coverage at no extra cost.

Finally, I'd like to have an App from an independent 3rd party that counts my usage for me... so I can go back to the service and contest their claims regarding my usage.

BTW: How do they count Bytes? Do they charge for all the back-and-forth acknowledgement packets? Do they charge for packet headers? It seems to me that providers can easily get involved with "creative accounting" here and rip you off without you even being aware of it. I hope there are watchdog groups out there trying to keep the providers honest!

AT&T is a saint compared to some of these prices. isn't Europe's cell service supposed to be faster and cheaper than the USA?

Yeah they are and that's what we are paying for. I'd rather have the high prices then put up with the US carriers, they sound horrendous.
