There appears to be an ongoing outage with international roaming across multiple cellular networks, with Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile customers abroad complaining about the issue on social networks and cellular community forums.

Customers traveling internationally have been without service since late Wednesday for hours at a time, with many losing cellular, text, and data. That has left many users unable to call their cellular provider hotline or access online chat help without a Wi-Fi network.

Based on feedback from customers that have managed to contact support, the providers are aware of the issue with international roaming and are actively working on resolving it, although there have been reports that this could take several hours. We'll update this article as soon as we learn more.

Update 1: There are reports that AT&T and T-Mobile customers abroad are also being affected by the outage, suggesting it could be the result of a wider network problem. We have updated the story headline to reflect the development.

Update 2: Bloomberg reports that a Verizon customer service representative who was contacted from the UK on Thursday said that it's an ongoing issue that engineers are working to address.

Update 3: The multi-network outage is related to issues at international connection partner Syniverse, according to a person familiar with the situation. The company says the estimated time of restoration is 12 hours up to 24 hours.

One of the terrible things about this is that the telecomms are never forthcoming about the nature and cause of these issues. Whether it is a software update gone bad, or whether it is something more nefarious such as a cyberattack

When there are major network disruptions like this, customers, shareholders, and stakeholders are owed an explanation about what is causing these disruptions

This screwed me so bad yesterday in Mexico City. Carrier left us out to dry. I’m leaving Verizon over this. What I went through yesterday when this randomly happened in a random neighborhood of CDMX I will never forgive this company for.
It sounds extreme but we got also screwed today also and got super lost with no ability to It basically ruined half of our day. I hope it’s fixed tomorrow.

Which is the problem? I buy a 20 usd/eur/... SIM card as an emeegency and the problem is fixed...

... ah what? You have the eSIM... sorry, cross your fingers the outage will be fixed shortly...

Blah, this news is disappointing because since it's affecting all the carriers - I can't make easy armchair comments like "See X carrier sucks!"
How true, how true, If you listen to comments on tech blogs there is no such thing as a competent company, only ones that suck. The internet is toxic.

This happened to me for a few hours last night in Mexico City. I rebooted my phone 5 times before I was convinced the cellular modem had broken and that I'd have to pick up another phone the next day. Suddenly, it came back to life just before going to bed.

such a humbling experience to land in Columbia on Wednesday with no service. Couldn’t call an Uber. It’s now Friday and still no service. I called Verizon and they are refunding me a portion of my plan because I have the travel pass built in.

We are traveling in rural Turkey family of three, all on T-mobile. Suddenly our daughter (iPhone 12) and myself (iPhone 13 Pro) saw our roaming go down completely. Interestingly, my wife still has cellular roaming working just fine on the iPhone 12 mini. We are all on the same family plan.

I’m in Germany using T-Mobile with no issues. In fact it seems that T-Mobile is giving me high speed data beyonf my plan. I used an UBER to get to FRA this am.

Yeah this is exactly what happened to me, and according to most of the rest of the people here I’m supposed to bootlick Verizon for the privilege of paying them $175/month for two lines plus $5/day for the Travel Pass when the garbage didn’t work and technical support lied to me and made the problem worse.

I had no service when I landed in Chicago because of that liar rep and the steps they took to “resolve” my problem.

Apparently most people here just don’t get basic things and if you disparage their favorite companies they come out of the woodwork to bootlick.

Funny too how these Verizon top fans can totally dismiss the fact that the liar rep managed to make sure I had no service when I landed in Chicago either, and I had to go to a store to fix the eSIM problem that their rep caused while abroad during this issue.

How the heck can people stand here and excuse this type of abuse out of a company?

Huge problem for me over seas! Ruined my whole day in Budapest because I couldn’t call a taxi or use my maps. Spent all day trying to get to a phone store for a mobile hotspot and SIM card. I learned my lesson. No more paying Verizon $100 a month for international service. Good thing I wasn’t out late at night by myself (I travel solo) and not be able to call a cab etc. I feel bad for those really caught off guard.

As someone who travels regularly, unless you absolutely need to use your phone number to make calls, always either get a local SIM or use Airalo for an eSIM (if it's cheap enough vs. local) and use VOIP for voice/text.

I've been a Verizon customer for over 15 years. I never, ever use their service abroad unless in Mexico where it's free. Just a super duper over the top ripoff when data is usually cheaper abroad than locally in the US.

I agree that an eSIM for data is usually the way to go vs a USA provider’s roaming. I usually use GigSky and haven’t had any issues thus far.

I have heard that some with this issue have had mixed results with selecting a carrier manually, as it seems that while Syniverse is working to fix the issue, some carriers have been fixed before others. So if you go to Settings > Cellular > (your roaming line) > Network Selection and turn off automatic selection, you may be able to find a carrier that is working.

For example I heard that Telcel in Mexico is working for some roaming customers while Movistar is not.

But hopefully they fix this entire issue soon!

I've had no issues roaming in Mexico City since an almost 3 hour outage on Wednesday night. But during that time I did try turning off auto selection and nothing came up at all, twice about an hour apart. I had the impression my phone's cellular modem might have simply died.

Well you could have gone to a cafe and used the internet
