Apple Could have gone to just a pill and home design for the notch but instead they added a function to the pill and hole design
I’ll give Apple credit for that. Now let’s see it in real life for final judgement

As someone who hates the notch and never "gets used to it" like everyone else seems to, I was dreading the pill cutout. Yet when they rolled the tape even I had to smile. Would I rather have an edge to edge screen with slightly bigger bezels? Of course! But to those trying to raise the ghost of Jobs against this thing, I'd argue this is the exact type of elegant solution to an inelegant problem that he made a name for himself on.

You must have some unusual needs. However, your points on phone maturity are something I can agree with.

Real improvements will depend on technological improvements to energy storage, future expansion of satellite capabilities, and other tangible improvements.

You know what is not an improvement by any metric, but is a desperate reach for "improvement"?

Unreliable, crease-ridden folding phones. To semi-quote a popular movie: "They were so excited about what they could do, they didn't think about whether they SHOULD do it".

How ironic in a "phone maturity" rant. I happen to own one of those "unreliable, crease-ridden phones," in fact this will be the 3rd generation of this phone that I've owned. Haven't had any issues with reliability at all, if anything I've not experienced the hiccups, freezing, restarts and other issues my iPhones typically have. But I've grown accustomed to the FUD from users who most likely haven't ever even held one, much less used it as a daily driver for any length of time.

But it is relevant because Samsung did take the phone market to a new level, whether you like the product or not. I can only speak for myself, but it's most definitely an "improvement" over other phones, again just my personal opinion. Hey, and best of all I don't have a notch or an island blocking my screen!

At least from what I saw, its actual purpose escaped all the is-it-a-solid-pill-or-is-it-an-"i"-oh-we-hate-it rumors, so it was nice to see a surprise yesterday. In spite of the goofy name, it seems like a useful and reasonably unique feature.

I think the dynamic island represents Apple at its best....It was a WOW moment at the keynote, totally unexpected, looks very useful and so cool. 🤩
Absolutely. Apart from the fact that Apple managed to keep this secret despite the obviously considerable development and design time this required, it's a design masterstroke -- turning a necessary evil into something exciting and genuinely useful.

It will be neat when they eventually put all the sensors under the screen but still keep the island when needed:p

Sorry to gore your ox. I was issued one for a month in Korea in May for an assignment and found it to be a complete POS. Obviously your experience is different from mine- however, given that I didn't pay for the phone, and you did, perhaps our objectivity levels are not the same.

Nope, doesn't phase me. If you are saying I love my phone because I paid for it then you are dead wrong, but the accusation doesn't surprise me. Nothing wrong with you not liking the phone, you're more than entitled to your opinion, just wanted to set the record straight on the other inane FUD spouting.

"fingerprint magnet"...how are you using a smartphone? Aren't you touching the screen? Doesn't that leave fingerprints? Isn't the "Dynamic Island" part of the screen? What the hell is wrong with you? Think man, think! It's bloody legal for now!

I like the idea, but they went over aesthetic vs true function. All I see is wasted space above the dynamic island time and other info up there. All should have been shifted up. just my 2 cents. Wasted space. View attachment 2053593

Things is... y'all are so focused on 'wasted space' that you really do forget that Apple does and always has cared about aesthetics first and foremost. This looks much more balanced than had you shifted it all the way up. That 'wasted space' really is just significant in your mind, not in an actual functional real work of *using* your phone. We're talking about fractions of fractions of an inch... what exactly are you gonna use that space for that you would gain by moving the island all the way up?

So is your ear when making or taking a phone call. I don't think my ear is probably as greasy as my fingers, but still. And just don't touch the center of the Island … it's where the volcano is. ;)

When I head the name I laughed out loud, but I really like the feature itself
I can’t wait to try it out next year on the iPhone 15 Pro

It's amazing how people are cheering Apple making the notch bigger and moving it into the display area.

The only thing revolutionary about the dynamic island is Apple's talent in selling it. It proves the reality distortion field is still alive and well I suppose.

Indeed. It's going to be fun the moment people start playing a video that is larger than 16:9 (like many YT channels, most movies, etc) and find that the new "notch" is invading the picture even without going totally fullscreen.

Most new phones just have a small hole punch out for the camera

Which somehow has always looked hideous... but I personally prefer to embrace design challenges instead of forcefully trying to hide them.

and for the bigger phones it's a pain to reach this area one-handed...

iPhones have not been made for one-handed use in literal years. Or can you reach control center one-handedly? That argument really is moot as it's been an (ignored) issue for those of us with smaller hands in forever...

Not going to lie, dynamic island and AOD were the primary reasons I'm going with the Pro this time around.

Same. I've not been in the market for Pro iPhones, ever. The additional value over the standard iPhone just wasn't that great for me, as it usually was merely a better camera and some gimmicks.

This year for the very first time I'd legit consider getting a Pro over the standard (if I were in the market to upgrade, which I'm not). I haven't felt this excited over an iPhone in a really long time.

Right. It's not like you'd gain another row of app icons. And who needs that anyway with these quite-large phones?

Regular full screen (at least on my 11Pro) sits quite a ways away from the notch so I don't think the pill will intrude either. Full-full screen crops the original content anyway, so you're already losing content with that viewing choice. I don't see a whole lotta difference between the notch protruding into that frame vs a much shorter but slightly more horizontal protrusion of the pill shape. For me I think the handy functionality of DI will more that make up for any full screen annoyances.

I’m intrigued to see how this works when watching a video or playing a game in landscape mode.
All content creators needs to rework their content to the dark parts of the video use the edge-less blackhole...er...I mean dynamic island.

I would gain a screen without any interruptions from left to right. Like i USED to have.

On the 13 Pro, 2:1 ratio videos already show the notch, even if just slightly. With the new pill version that is positioned much more inside the display, there is no way that it's not going to be visible.
