Yes, but you make the case FOR a MacBook Air, and I'm not even sure you realize it. You've got a laptop i.e., MacBook and then IF the rumors are true, built-in wireless connectivity in the form of WiMax i.e., Air. Thus you get MacBook Air.

I dont see how I've made a case for the macbook air. I wasnt out to make a case against it in the first but rather for some sort of home server. The macbook already has pretty decent built in wireless connectivity (802.11n, BT). WiMAX and 3G aren't widely used enough, especially in notebooks. Those who need total wireless solutions will pay for them.

Out of the bazillion different posts weighing in on the "Air" bit, your thoughts seem to be the most coherent, to me at least -- if only because of the point on branding you raised. Marketing would want the "Air" theme to be consistent.

But the larger point is this: I think any user in a multi-mac household, particularly ones with laptops, can relate to the need for such a product. Apple wants us to want more and more media, be it video or audio, and for it to be available for consumption through as many Apple products as possible -- iPod, iPod Touch, iPhone, Apple TV, iMac, Macbook etc. All this content has to be stored somewhere, and for now, that has been on our computers as they hold, for consumers, the largest capacity. Video, particular of the HD variety, complicates that equation in that the file sizes are many times greater than say, your typical AAC song of iTunes. Combine that with the fact that an increasing proportion of Mac sales are MacBook/MacBook Pros where hard drive space is at a relative premium compared to a desktop and you can see where an "Air" server fits in. Perhaps this represents the pumped up Apple TV Businessweek pondered earlier this week. In any event, give it a much larger hard drive with its own master iTunes account and allow it to act as a hub to other computers on the network (probably finite just to please the content providers). Users will be able to navigate the iTunes Store on their television screen, with the ability to purchase movies and songs, or rent movies, HD ones, without having to get up from the couch. MacBook users will no longer have to be mindful of how much media they throw onto their hard drive. Instead of syncing to the Apple TV from the computer, the roles are reversed, and the user will designate only the songs, shows and movies they want on their computer from the Air Server. It allows the stagnant Apple TV to be reborn as a media server, ready to eat up tons of HD content, and allows happy owners to cast themselves into the role of programming director of their own mini-broadcast network. Perhaps something is in the air indeed..

That was what i was trying to describe, but i couldnt be bothered to type it.

You mean something like this?

500GB or 1TB (RAID 1)
WiFi Only
Bonjour Networking
iTunes & iPhoto library storage
Any Apple wifi device can stream from it & sync with it
$399 & $499

If it could be used as a central storage and backup center id get one. A time machine vault, and iTunes/iPhoto media server. Though id want local copies for when out and about. Maybe like a syncing sort of center, where all the macs conected sync their media to it, so everyone in the house can share all their music... The RIAA would love it!

I really don't think you'll want to lug around the MacNAMBLA. So yes, name does matter.

Well, that wouldn't matter if you were really a member of the North American Marlon Brando Look Alikes, now would it?

My vote is MacBook ThinCrust

With sausage, and extra cheese.

Only Apple fans could go on for page upon page complaining about a name that might or might not even be real for a product that might not even be real. :D :apple: :D

And then Arn goes and pokes us with a stick, and yet another "heard more confirmations" post.

You know, I bet it's all fake and Arn is the one having the laugh. How dare ya, Arn, you cruel, sadistic freak. :p lol

Seriously though, like it or hate it, if it's coming then there isn't anything that can stop it at this point.

If it's a MBA, then so be it. Like it or not.

The only way I'd want wireless recharging is if it was truly inductive and not conductive, which is what is out now. I dont see how putting a device down on a charging pad that is plugged in is that much better than plugging in the device itself.

it just adds to the cool factor

Back to the name macbook air: I hope they didn't actually call it that. Unless it can float or some messed up ****, the name would be so inappropriate for a laptop lol.

The name MacBook Air is a little on the silly side.

What we'll see in the business section of your newspaper:

- "Get your MBA at Cornerstone University..."
- "Get your MBA at Apple..."

The name MacBook Air is a little on the silly side.

The name "iPod" for a portable entertainment device was positively hooted off this site that many years ago when it was introduced.

MacRumors doesn't have a great track record of its members having much savvy in the arena of tech marketing.

God, how do people find this stuff..?

Haha, i wish i knew too. That would be cool if i knew the snooping techniques. But anyway, the point is, the name kinda sucks. If that is indeed the name, kinda a weird choice on apple's part, but so be it, a name is a name, and the point is the specs of the beast.

Name is a bit odd. At this point, it could mean anything.

But if it really is a subnote MacBook, then I hope it will be something that's useful, practical and great looking.

ZOMG - New MacBook Air displays in the 5th Ave Store on the eve of MacWorld 2008 ?

 What could it be? A MacBook Air display????

P.S. - I took these photos just this evening ;)

Good, looks like whatever is announced tomorrow may very well be available same day. I don't think I could stand another iPhone of iPod Touch wait again.

The silence is deafening...

Interesting how Apple Legal has not asked MR to stop posting info about this "MacBook Air", considering Apple's previous history of going after rumor sites and MR's posting of multiple stories about the "MacBook Air", each of which has little tidbits that suggest that MR is fairly confident that this product will be released tomorrow. I can think of a few possible reasons for Apple's silence:

1. MR is Apple's unofficial sounding board and has Apple's blessing to post limited information to see what kind of feedback it gets (Arn will deny this, of course).

2. Apple Legal has had its fill of going after rumor sites after having paid off ThinkSecret to stop publishing rumors.

3. Apple is trying to throw the rumor sites off by seeding misleading information. It would only do this if it felt that the actual "Air" product(s)/service(s) to be introduced today would exceed the public's expectations based on the current rumors.

4. Apple is trying to flush out an internal leak.

What does anyone else think is Apple's motivation for not shutting down the wild "MacBook Air" speculation?

Movies, Videos and Music is in the air folks

Yeah.

I'm thinking that this MacBook Air is just a piece of the puzzle, albeit probably the biggest and/or most hyped piece.

I'm really expecting this keynote to be just as much about new media content and new media content delivery as it will be about products to playback that content like the "MacBook Air".

I'm expecting serious AppleTV and Mac mini updates. Maybe the fusion of AppleTV with the Mac mini.

Hopefully Airport Express will finally get 802.11n too.

Of course, Apple will probably show us new ways to interact with one or all these devices and the content as well using multi-touch input.

We'll know in 6 hours. ;)

My expectations are about the same. New media/video content and new ways to view it.

5. There's no actual information in the "air" rumor so Apple could care less.

Not sure if it's been said yet, but I wanted to get it on the internet before the keynote.

I think the MacBook Air will be a satellite computer. It will have the basic info to run the OS installed on flash memory, but will stream from the base station anywhere in the world.

The idea behind it is "I don't need my superdrive and HDD on the couch with me while I surf." So why have them in the mobile unit at all?

That "Something in the Air" is your data. BOOM!

Well, the store is down, so I'm expecting an AppleTV media hub that can stream HD content wirelessly to a revamped Apple Cinema Display and no wires required

;)

I think some are getting a little too touchy about this....

The name is far from perfect but good grief, it isn't as bad as some are making it out to be.

Hell, just as long as the product is actually GOOD :D
