If anyone thinks Apple will call this thing Air, you're probably wrong. If that was indeed the name of the product, Air would be capitalized. It's not, so it wont be called that, you can take that to the bank.

"There's something in the Air" ? So what is this "something" that's going to be inside of the MacBook Air? You're thinking a little too hard there. Take a break.

Personally though, I think that "there's something in the air" probably refers to an update to the iPhone that will be announced. I've seen it elsewhere that Apple is going to be rolling out the iPhone on some carrier in Australia that only has 3G, so it seems to me like this would make more sense, a 3G iPhone. We all know it's coming, maybe I'm wrong and not at MacWorld, but it will come.

Don't Roast

...and the rest of you like these people.

If this MacBook Air name comes to light on Tuesday, I'm gonna read through this whole damn thread for everyone who made a post like this and then dedicate one to these oh-so insightful people.

It'll be the "MacRumor Reader Round-Up: Who NOT to listen to!" thread.

This should have been done for all the "MacBook/MacBook Pro/Mac Pro" nay-sayers. Then maybe we wouldn't have to be reading this junk all over again.

If true, prepare to be publicly blogged and flogged.

Don't roast people just because they have a different opinion. Roast the people that aren't polite and act like their opinion is fact.

I personally don't think that "something in the air" refers to the sub-notebook, but I'm prone to being wrong.

How do you know these things ? Any more updates you can give us ? This is a big call...... please please tell us more....

I can see Apple redesigning the MacBook Pro and as a result redesigning the MacBook to fit in but another notebook seems silly to me. Everyone squeals how there's no need for a "mid range" desktop because there wouldn't be a market for it - which sounds the same for a sub notebook.

The Intel move consolidated their notebook range from 12" iBook, 14" iBook, 12" PowerBook, 15" PowerBook and 17" PowerBook into a very nice three models that seems to have made sense. It's only a pity that the MacBook has integrated graphics...

Powerbook 12" owners were a very rabid bunch on how much they liked their notebook and one of the reasons was size and weight. The 12" Powerbooks were around 3lbs, but the MacBooks are in the same weight range as the MacBook Pro (~5lbs).

I'm personally looking at this with interest because I want my next notebook to be something really light. So far it's been between the ThinkPad X61 or the MacBook. ThinkPad downside is no OS X, but it *is* ~3lbs and with the 8-cell battery (on the X61s model) can go for ~6 hours with wireless active (according to one reviewer). The upside of the MacBook is that I could run all three OSes on it (Windows XP, Mac OS X, Linux), but it is ~5lbs.

Maybe I overstated a bit with the "it will come out," but all evidence points to 3G. That whole Austrailia bit might not even have any relevance to the matter, but the next step for Apple in their hardware revisions of the iPhone would be to add 3G. There is no other currently viable technology that will allow cellular network internet that is faster than Edge. (I don't know how 'area-dependent' 3G speeds are, but people complain a lot about Edge speeds depending on how fast their area's Edge is)

There have been mentions of Intel WiMax people being at Apple. This may be true, but *where* is their WiMax out there for the iPhone to use? Prove me wrong. Find a WiMax ISP/Cell Carrier out there with a currently available (or at least operable within the next 6 months) WiMax network. I would *love* to be proved wrong, but all evidence points to no. (not only that, last I heard WiMax was only 1Mbps up/down.)

As to the Intel WiMax people at Apple: It seems more likely to me that Apple wants to develop WiMax solutions for the future, but they won't end up in products until we are closer to a rollout of a WiMax network somewhere. Apple may add WiMax to their products before there is a network, but without a network it will hardly be a big selling point to market as a major feature of a product. Maybe they could market it as having "all wireless technologies" in it (802.11a/b/g/pre-n,WiMax,Bluetooth,CDMA & GSM 3G cards) but I would be sceptical at least of having the 3G cards for both networks.

As to the name MacBookAir - I would suggest that although "Air" might be a great name for light shoes, that for computer products, using the homophone "Error" may prove to be just a little too tempting for pundits and critics...

(Oops, think I posted this in the wrong thread earlier.)

MacBook Air? This is a terrible name. I loved the MacBook and MacBook Pro names, but MacBook Air? The something in the air immediately made me think AirPort, or Apple TV. iPhone is a possibility too. But I doubt that the Air has anything to do with the sub-notebook.

If it does...well, I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Only Apple fans could go on for page upon page complaining about a name that might or might not even be real for a product that might not even be real. :D :apple: :D

It's a constant source of entertainment for me to read about how "Apple would never do this" or "Apple will always do that". It cracks me up.

Someone wake me when a new product is actually announced.

Something's in the air

Do you think that this might be used in regards to sending movies wirelessly to Apple TV and not the name of a laptop (which i agree is horrible)?

Mackbook Air makes me think of Nike too much... Hence, I can't help but think of shoes.

Air Mac! They can even get Michael Jordon as the spokesman and use the "Air Jordon" logo, but with a laptop in his hand (or an Apple logo).

Holy cow. I read way more forum posts than I should, but 444 is too many even more me, so excuse me if this is a repeat, but I'll take a shot.

Slim laptop with no DVD means no way to do OS installs (among other things) without hooking up to a DVD drive. What if Airport could be used in a -bootable- way. Yes, that would take some serious low-level tricks (which is likely why it hasn't been done yet), but would be really cool. Wouldn't be particularly fast, but 802.11n might make it doable.

Or combine that with a new Apple TV and you get a wireless DVR with Blu-Ray DVD drive that can provide remote boot/install and buy and watch your videos -- all wirelessly, "in the air".

Okay, enough wild speculation...

Does Apple have something like Window's RIS (Remote Installation Service) technology that would allow you to install the OS via the network?

At this point, it seems that the 'Air' theme just might transcend from downloads and WiFi, to the subcompact notebook which integrates with it.
