macbook with AT&T 3G connection (internet).. full functionality of safari.. and can run MS office... internet everywhere...

I lose a couple of IQ points each time I read this.

There are more countries in the world than just the US. You guys actually think that Apple will go world wide to establish contracts with carriers so you can just use 3G on the go :-|.

NO.

New names ARE weird

Man, there are some people with short memories around here.

Most thought "Vista" was a stupid name for an OS. (Well, it is, but we've gotten used to it.)

Most though "Nintendo Wii" was a stupid / silly name for a console. Again, it is, but we've totally gotten used to it.

So if it's called the MacBook Air.. so what? We'll all be used to it within a month or two. It's not a reason NOT to give it that name. Most new names, designs, and so on, are considered weird or silly at first. That's how things progress.

Wow - 17 pages in and people are still ranting about the name?

IMHO - and assuming it is correct, it isn't really THAT bad.

Oh my gosh... that is the funniest thing I have ever read. I have been reading macrumors for about 6 years now, but I rarely post. After reading the old thread from when the iPod was introduced, I had to say something. It is truly amazing that 19 out of 20 posts in this thing are all negative. "No one will buy it, too expensive...It's dumb, steve is making a big mistake, ect... "
I guess that it just goes to show you that no one really knows what they are talking about. No offense. I love you all.
I am sitting here laughing out loud, waking up the dogs. At least Traveler got it right. :)

Actually, it's the official release of the Apple 'AirGuitar'. The 100% green packaged hardware is a revolution in MIDI interfaces, but also gaming, as it can be used with all 'Guitar Hero' versions.

Taking actual played notes from the AirGuitar, your plucking prowess will know no bounds as the AirGuitar connects wirelessly to your Mac and can be used with not only Rock Band, but Garageband, Logic Studio and even Safari!

A bargain at only $299. API due 2012. 3G version due 2025.

(Plus, this explains the Garageband leaked photo.)

As discussed elsewhere, IMHO the "something in the air" banner is much more likely to be associated with some sort of new iTunes feature e.g. movies/slingbox than with the possible subnotebook.

Yes agreed its a great read.... my favorite quote:

"All that hype for an MP3 player? Break-thru digital device? The Reality Distiortion Field™ is starting to warp Steve's mind if he thinks for one second that this thing is gonna take off. "

lol, it's amazing how many of the posts on that thread were echoed in the iPhone threads when that was announced. Let's see if the iPhone haters have got as much egg on their faces in 6 years. :)

I can see Apple redesigning the MacBook Pro and as a result redesigning the MacBook to fit in but another notebook seems silly to me. Everyone squeals how there's no need for a "mid range" desktop because there wouldn't be a market for it - which sounds the same for a sub notebook.

The Intel move consolidated their notebook range from 12" iBook, 14" iBook, 12" PowerBook, 15" PowerBook and 17" PowerBook into a very nice three models that seems to have made sense. It's only a pity that the MacBook has integrated graphics...

please don't derail the thread after all it's common knowledge that midi towers are a small niche compared to sub-notebooks,tablets, streaming clients and whatnot ...
;)

true i would agree that the current macbook at the current price needs a better graphics chip

actually anoher reason why things like "airbook" are less likely is i guess that apple want to keep that macbook moniker for all their laptops to make it easier in terms of brand recognition

I also quite fondly remember when the leaked screenshots of Tiger's dashboard made their way to MacRumors. Comments ranged from total disbelief ("Those are the fakest fake screenshots I've ever seen.") to explanations that Apple would NEVER come up with anything that ugly. (Must admit, I didn't believe it either back then...). Anyway, it's a fun read:

The Macbook light is supposed to be THE thing in this year's Macworld. "Something in the air" is referring to the wireless synching/charging abilities of the new Macbook.

I sure hope not, that name is HORRIBLE

Jobs is laughing his ass off right now.

This "Macbook Air" name is way too big of a stretch. Just because Apple posted a banner that had the word Air in it, the new product is automatically going to be called Air? lol.

bunch of hot air if you ask me

What a horrible horrible name. Wow...absolutely ridiculous! MacBook Air? What does it fly??

I can't believe some people in Apple are getting paid seven figures to come up with names like MacBook Air?

I'm not saying people won't buy it due to the name, it wouldn't deter me, but I can't but feel a little embarrassed about that name...

...and the rest of you like these people.

If this MacBook Air name comes to light on Tuesday, I'm gonna read through this whole damn thread for everyone who made a post like this and then dedicate one to these oh-so insightful people.

It'll be the "MacRumor Reader Round-Up: Who NOT to listen to!" thread.

This should have been done for all the "MacBook/MacBook Pro/Mac Pro" nay-sayers. Then maybe we wouldn't have to be reading this junk all over again.

If true, prepare to be publicly blogged and flogged.

Not to mention all of this talk of Rentals and Digital Distribution...Plus the iPhone is likely to get an update in software so everything featured seems to be about portability and wireless in nature...That could be it, however both Arn from Macrumors and 9to5 believe it might be called the Macbook Air...it is possible.

ultra lite with external everything

I see an ultra light laptop with flash memory only and option of an "air" (wireless) external hard drive - which is also a media server for all the other apple products in your arsenal.

it would also obviously have to include a wireless connection to the external optical drive and other accessories. I wouldn;t get my hopes up for much more, though this is pretty cool if you think about it - essentially wireless everything and instant home network servers.

It could be a "pro" machine as long as you did';t need the screen real estate and were willing to lug all the accessories along. It'll be interesting to see the specs....

MacBook Air it is

The name MacBook was and still IS ghastly, and yet people have grown used to it. I guarantee that if the name isn't MacBook Air then it will be something else suitably awful. But the fact is that most on these threads will have one soon enough regardless. In the meantime, please stop boring everyone to death with your pathetic whining. It's the product after all that we're interested in. One question I want answered is will it have barbed wire edges like the MacBook that made me sell mine and revert to a Powerbook? Slitting my wrists wasn't supposed to be part of the deal.

If anyone thinks Apple will call this thing Air, you're probably wrong. If that was indeed the name of the product, Air would be capitalized. It's not, so it wont be called that, you can take that to the bank.

I was thinking about doing that myself, just to get back at all the people that post stuff like that. Oh well, nice to know I don't have to do the work. :p

Edit: Hey look, there's another one for the list - Intarweb.

Wow, didn't realise you worked at Apple and have the inside scoop. Shouldn't you be under NDA though? We'll see come Tuesday, anyhow. :)

Well Macbook Water = Macbook 02

So Macbook Air = (whatever the forumla is?)

Or H2O, but who's counting... ;)

As for Air, or not to Air, forget what it's called.

If there is a sub or mini/thin whatever, the specs should be more important, as has been mentioned a scant few times in any of these threads.

Who cares what's called? Seriously? Are we so vain now that if the name "sucks", then we won't touch a product?

Not to mention I can see all the threads bashing it, no matter what it has in it, because it won't be exactly what those people wanted.

Well, if there is something like this (help us if there isn't because the whining will be high) it's going to be targeted towards a certain groups of users. It won't be a portable graphic development dream, portable gaming through bootcamp or OS X dream, or a bottom line email on the go machine either. It would seem that to make the most sense it would be targeted towards the middle somewhere, so that you could Photoshop a few things, or do some light video work (although it would be noticeably slower than a MBP), and then be really good for general office type work.

Then again, AppleInsider also doesn't believe it's going to be a tablet, although they still count a "sub-notebook" as on tap.

Either way, the name is far less important than what it does.

While I won't disagree that naming can help or hinder a product to some degree, there has to be a solid product there first.

Do you 'see' dead people too? Maybe you can 'see' which technology all these wireless external devices are going to be based on? Bluetooth? Don't make me laugh. Bluetooth is too slow to access mass storage devices, unless you would enjoying burning a DVD (or watching a movie) over USB1.1 speeds.

I'm not going to out and say that it's impossible. Because it isn't. There are technologies in development that *could* support what you are talking about. But none of them are ready for market. Unless Apple develops their own in secret *and* brings it to market. The likelihood of any the things you predict happening are very very very low. Nowhere near the "it will obviously happen because Apple uses a magic wand to design their computers"-attitude that you have taken.

I wouldn;t get my hopes up for much more

I had to laugh at this though. Your hopes are already so much higher than what the evidence dictates.

Edit: Missed this part

essentially wireless everything and instant home network servers.

You don't ask for much, do you?
