QE for Mac: Not worth the time

I've been waiting for months to install and use the lastest Quicken for Mac from Intuit - I finally downloaded it yesterday, played with it for about 1/2 hour, and this morning requested my money back - disappointing, to say the least. As others have been saying, just because I use a Mac doesn't mean I don't want the same functionality that's been in the Windows version(s) for 10 years or more !!

Anyway, I'm moving to iBank - looks good, has the features I need, and there's even a very cool iPhone app for it.

This will be the last money that Intuit will ever see from me, and I better get it back! They said it will take 48 hours, although it took about 5 minutes for them to debit my account.

Honestly, I am very impressed by the new software. It is easy to follow and has a great look to it. I hate keeping track of my expenses, but this product actually makes it fun ...

You joined just to post this? It must be soul-destroying posting astroturf all over the internet, but I suppose in these hard times you have to grab any job you can. I wonder if the IP you posted this from can be tracked back to Intuit?

That would be an interesting story for Arn to report - Intuit caught posting fake astroturf in a MR forum.

LOL, good one! :D If that piece of fluff wasn't written by a marketing shill, I'll eat my shirt!

More seriously, I really wonder what the hell is happening with this software category. I've been using Quicken since the DOS days in the early 90s, and I can remember the days when users and pundits alike eagerly awaited each year's new releases of Quicken and MS Money to assess all the neat new features and to weigh in on which one was "ahead" of the other. Sadly, those days are now long gone; Microsoft has pulled the plug on Money, and Intuit hasn't given us any real innovation in years. Each year's "upgrade" now mainly consists of cosmetic interface tweaks with no new functionality, and Intuit now apparently needs to overcome the lack of a compelling reason to upgrade by forcing it upon their users with their sunsetting policy. I recently moved from Quicken 2007 to 2010, only because I had to. Most irritatingly, the program is still far from stable and still ships with some of the same bugs and annoyances that have been present in the last few versions.

Meanwhile, advances that are long overdue, such as good integration with smartphone apps via the cloud, are nowhere in sight. And yet Intuit acts as though they are a hotbed of innovation; the self-aggrandizing tone in that Intuit blog post that someone pointed to is sickening:

"The idea would be that you could get the same features and functionality – call it the best of three worlds – no matter where you want to manage your finances, or which operating system you choose. Everyone wins. Let the weight of that ambitious plan sink in. It’s a daunting prospect on our part, and we have a team of more than 60 people working on it full time. Can we pull it off? I think you deserve that we do."

What, are they launching a manned mission to Mars? How hard can it be to port the Windows version to the Mac OS? Adobe, not exactly the world's best software company either, nevertheless manages this feat with nearly their entire catalog of considerably more complex applications!

Wells Fargo drops support for QEM 2010

I checked with Wells Fargo after getting a pop up window in QEM that said, Wells Fargo has chosen to no longer support Quicken Essentials for Mac. They said that the problem is with the Quicken software. They will not support it due to limitations in the software as it exists today. They said they do not know if or when they will change their policy but said that if Quicken for Mac improves the current software they will probably support it. They do still support Quicken 2007 for Mac and all Windows versions. What a slap in the face to Quicken. How embarrassing for Quicken. One of the largest American financial institutions will not support it due to it's limitations. Ouch.

Since I am a long time Wells Fargo customer, it would be much more difficult to switch banks than to switch Software. I guess I will be asking for my refund along with all the others who are doing so now. What a shame, I was eagerly awaiting this release and had high hopes since they touted it as all new and improved. Very disappointed.

Q: Will my version of Quicken for Mac 2005, 2006, or 2007 be discontinued?

These products are not being discontinued at this time. Our policy is to support the current product and the two prior versions.

If this is true, BigJohn, why does Quicken keep sending me the following email:

Dear Quicken 2007 Customer,

We are contacting you because according to our records you are currently using the 2007 version of Quicken. We want you to be aware that as of April 30, 2010, online services and live technical support will no longer be available with this version. To continue your services without interruption, you must upgrade to Quicken 2010. Either insert the Upgrade CD we sent you or download today!

In order to make this transition as easy as possible, we are offering FREE bonus software, valued up to $139, when you upgrade today. Plus, new Quicken 2010 features make it easier than ever to organize your money, pay bills on time and find ways to save more.

Ha! I just did a chat with Intuit to try to get the above answered.

They said they could not discuss it because support for my product--Quicken 2007 for Mac--had been discontinued!

You probably registered Quicken for Windows 2007 (or Intuit thinks you did), which is ending support. That email appears to be referencing information about the Windows version.

I purchased this and ended up getting a refund a few days later. It's very limited compared to 2007. You can't even password protect the data file!

The refund process was very easy. You simply request a refund with your order number through their web site.

Too bad. I was looking forward to this software but I guess I will stick with 2007 for a while longer.

Regarding the "ABC's Finances" in the title bar: this is super annoying. But to change it:

Quit QE. Locate your datafile (which normally resides in your Documents folder.) Rename the file to your liking. Double click to launch.

QEM is an ugly dog compared to its Windows counterpart

Having been an user since version 1 in MAC, I have had to change to the Windows Version of Quicken in 2009 given the lack of features and feature removal or trimming down of the MAC version

Hopefully it would be a real feature upgrade not a $$$ charging upgrade :(
