I think it's understandable that Apple didn't want people sending gun emojis to each other.

What is wrong with having a gun emoji so me and my daughter can communicate the way we want?
I would like to get out hunting with her before she turns 18 so hitting the range to shoot is a part of making that dream become true.

Do you want to take my guns away and ban me from shooting?

Is anyone else envious of Google's Emoji designs? I would never switch to an Android device for the sake of Emoji's but I think they're far more simplistic and expressive than Apple's. And considering Apple's legacy in good design, I can't understand why they continue to expand this library. The skeuomorphic style is incredibly aged, and the muddied details of the non-smiley icons reminds me of the compositional mess of clip art. It's a little infuriating...

The world doesn't have a large enough shark population for the amount of jumping them going on in this thread.

Adding emoji is harmless guys. The more the merrier. The Unicode/emoji consortium stuff isn't just Apple coming up with progressive ideas to annoy old-minded conservatives who want everything to stay the same forever. "Optional female emojis?! This is why we gotta vote trump! .. There's no such thing as equality! Trigger warning! Now we need transgender ones!" When did Macrumors become brietbart?

Idiotic.

The gun was invented to cause death. I don't care what make or model of gun it is, for I have no need for that information other than a gun is something I don't want to ever own or even be around. If a friend of mine owned a gun, they would no longer be my friend. Good job I live in the UK and hundreds aren't being shot up every day here.

I'm done with this conversation, it's off topic and I don't really care what you have to say. Nor do you actually care about what I'm saying.

Judicious use of deadly force. Go look it up and learn that tools can be both abused and USED. Our police have guns for this reason. Our homeland defense has guns for this reason. Our military have guns for this reason. All of our politicians have body guards for this reason. Our celebrities have guns and body guards for this reason. Our nation carries guns for this reason and it is enshrined in our constitution.

Are you for taking away the right of women to own guns to protect themselves from rapists?

You argument and feet stamping about turning your back on friends because they pursue their interests in firearms says a lot about the kind of person you are. I have found friends because of shooting and firearms. Why are you so hung up about guns? Care to explain?

You know you don't have feet to stand on in an argument when you 1) make an argument then 2) follow it up with "I'm done with this conversation." Sorry pal, but that is checkmate, and I gladly accept your concession.

I love Google's ones. Full list here: http://emojipedia.org/google/ in most cases I'd say I prefer them. They're extremely cute.

Now messages has extensions will we be able to use all sorts of weird emoji sets?

I'm not trying to antagonize, and should disclose that I am pro gun-control laws, however I've learned to stay away from generalizations like this!

Take dilemma for example: Let's ban cars because cars can be used for killing.

Outrageous statement right? Neither of the following statements are true:

1) All cars are used for killing.
- False, because cars are used for transportation.
2) No cars are used for killing.
- False, because some cars have been used as tools to facilitate killing.

Now for the gun emoji: Let's ban gun emojis because guns are used for killing.

Neither of these statements is true:

1) All guns are used to kill
- False, people use guns for other means such as collectors items, sports, etc. Hunting, while it does imply killing, is different (in my opinion) especially in areas where lack of hunting would cause population control issues for certain animals and impact the ecosystem.
2) Guns are not used to kill
- False, guns are often used to inflict harm.

While this is a long winded post, I hope you see my point.

It's not as outrageous as one may think to use the gun emoji while texting a friend asking if they want to hunting.

Sanity. Thank you.

Willing to bet that 90% of people who complain about this will be straight white guys, who don't see this as an issue because they've always been represented.

As a non-binary black midget climate change refugee, I agree.

I just came here to see big tough unshakable people "triggered" by equality.

Not triggered. Mocking.

I want an air conditioner unit emoji just to irritate John Kerry. The more ac emojis are used, the warmer the planet gets.

I want an emoj of the whitest person in the world drivin
Guns are designed as killing machines. That's what they are. Cars are designed for transportation. Knives are designed for cutting. Etc. I think it's understandable that Apple didn't want people sending gun emojis to each other.

Actually, the only people getting upset in this forum are the people who are against it. Everybody else probably just sees it as common sense progress.

Nobody is upset. We are mocking the utter stupidity of identity politics and political correctness, something that you seem very fond of.

Apart from the odd 'smile' to indicate "joke/irony" and avoid misunderstanding... I find these symbols idiotic.
But I presume from the number of comments here that most of you make use of emoji.
Is this the case?
I have never used them, always thought they were for kids or teenagers.

You respond like this when you have lost the argument.... Sorry you were triggered.

This should have been a political discussion thread

I'm willing to say over 80% of the available Emojis are totally unnecessary and never used. We should have just stuck with like 20 yellow face emotions and left the rest of them out.
You have no idea what emojis are and where they came from do you? Hint: They are not emoticons.

Unicode is a standard and Apple is continuing to extend its support for that standard. Those that are upset about these new emoji should direct their outrage at the Unicode Consortium.

For those who don't like males getting haircuts or female construction workers, simple solution is don't use those emoji. You can solely use the emoticon emoji or none at all, whatever you feel most comfortable with.

For those who don't understand how to make use of so many emoji, I expect most people using more than just the simple emoticon varieties have a process similar to mine - we have a smallish palette of emoji that we use on a regular basis and they end up (mostly) in the recently used area of the emoji keyboard right up front. Occasionally we have to go digging for something else.

"Nobody is upset" lol

All Apple did was include women emojis. The amount of butthurt in response to the inclusion of new emojis goes beyond "upset" and into insanity territory.
