Dark mode? Split screen for iPhone?

Colour me jaded, but what is the point of these? Any developer can use dark mode already in apps. So Apple are introducing it for first party apps; whoop de frigging whoo. And split screen for iPhone is just silly.

If this is the best Apple can do, then truly the time to get excited over a new iOS is gone. Guess Cook's priorities lie with sucking up to empty-headed douchebag D-list celebrities rather than focusing on products. Bloody hell.

You're getting upset by some concept photos done by a website basically guessing and wishing.

I got nightmare on my jailbreak and its a great feature - I have the phone set to automatically go into nightmode at sunset and back to regular at sunrise.

For dark mode, it's all about system wide activation of dark mode (sorta like Night Shift and True Tone), not to mention energy savings from OLED. Currently, individual apps with dark mode all have a dark mode setting and/or gesture to activate the feature. I would much prefer one setting to rule them all.

As for the split screen, I doubt split screen on iPhone will be intend for full time use like on 12.9" iPad Pro. Even on 9.7" iPad, using split mode is less than ideal for extended use. It will instead help with multitasking, dragging data from one app to another or temporarily interacting with second app.

Can we get amen here?

I find white text on a dark background to be very hard on my eyes. Apparently it becomes more common as people get older.

I'm fine with there being a dark mode as it will be better for some, but I just wish the standard mode was better implemented to not be overly bright.
I actually prefer white text on a dark background. That is how I read in iBooks and I don't get eye fatigue as fast.

Same here. I like the concept of dark mode UIs, they look cool, but for me they are just not as usuable in many circumstances, especially, as you indicate, for reading lots of text.

But also like you, I'm fine for there being a dark mode, with the emphasis on mode, for those who want it, and a lot of people seem to want it. I'm almost always ok with options.

Dark mode would be a great option but I sure hope this isn't among the 'marquee' features being introduced for iOS10. There are far more important changes they could make, functionality they could add that I'd hope to see before either dark mode or split screen.

Okay grandpa, enough. Next you'll be telling us how everything was better in 1950. We get it, old times, Steve Jobs turning in his grave, yada yada.

This is where it's at!

Apple just reinvented the dark. Again.

Clearly this is the reason we've all been needing to never switch. Hand on heart, never switch.

This has got me considering a Space Grey model in the future. Looking slick.

Watch all the developers follow with dark versions of their apps.

Good, we needed five separate comments to convey these unique ideas. Over one fifth of the first 23 comments should be single sentences about dark mode and generic OS-switch sentiments. :p

And as such, I doubt the background will be dark gray. It will be pitch black like Apple Watch.

Right. Jony Ive already said in an interview that the iPhone looked so outdated compared to the watch. So he's been pushing for this for a while, strictly from a design perspective.

But I do wonder what they have planned for the White faced models. If the screen covers the entire front of the phone edge to edge, and the bezels are completely eliminated, then there likely won't be a white iPhone anymore, which really will be too bad. I kind of like the white bezel framing the 'light' themed screen.

Dark Mode? Likely.

Split screen for iPhones? Nah...they're too small unless it's restricted to the 6+.

That could be a way to upsell people who would otherwise get the smaller size.

Obviously this feature will be limited to the new iPhones, though. The existing 6+ may or may not be technically capable of split screen, but Apple will use it as a feature to make people upgrade to the newer devices.

I'll pass - I'm happy with keeping my 6+ for now. Maybe in a year. More likely in two.

Quite.

For reading, the best thing is still black text on a lighter background, but Ive had to make iOS garishly white. What we need is a nice olive background as a default for the background, so it doesn't glare. White works for real paper, but not for computer screens.
