I hope against hope that this might be an update to iOS 9. I miss the days where WWDC had hardware and apps available "today" as Steve used to say. These days it feels more like WWDC is all about "you'll have this in the fall". I'd like a little treat thrown in for today as well as the anticipation of waiting for the fall for the rest.

Airplane Mode definitely turns off GPS. It's been that way since GPS chips have been in iPhones and iPads. It doesn't make sense because a GPS radio is receive-only and perfectly functional without cellular assistance.
Nope, it doesn't. Just used it while hiking last weekend. I had put the phone into airplane mode because the battery was running low but several mapping applications had no problems keeping locating me on the map as I moved around.

Basically the jailbreak dev's ideas and innovations with the apple charm. That's bs. It doesn't take that long. It's just the "think different " marketing strategy.

Of all the things I miss most about a jailbroken phone that haven't already been appropriated by iOS it's probably Eclipse 2.

Dark mode is being saved for iOS 11 can't release too many new things at once and we would have seen betas testing already. It's a nice thought but Apples not ready yet.
I cannot remember when we saw any iOS betas before the official unveiling of a new major version. Can you point me to an example?

Apple sticking with their famous "let's give them a few features we could have given them a few years ago but didn't" routine.
That's what I'm saying. Geez. It's like they have to jailbreak and collect ideas/hacks and modify them so they invented it... Perhaps that's why they release little by little.

It's just getting kind of sad to me. For a company that went after Samsung so hard for copying the things they did from iOS they are doing the same thing from the jailbreaking community and Samsung now.

I would be satisfied if iOS X is literally dark mode, an overhaul of Siri, and iPad Pro productivity enhancements. For me, those are three hugely needed feature upgrades.

Dark mode would need to be system-wide with an API, and hopefully come to MacOS which has a quarter-baked dark mode implementation. An overhaul of Siri would make her smarter at understanding things in context, as well as an API for third-party developers to hook her up to some better data sources. iPad Pro productivity enhancements means making keyboard shortcuts more consistent with ones on MacOS across the system, better project management support with some type of file system API (even if simplified), the ability to pin favorite multitasking apps to an area in the switcher (maybe some way to save "spaces" on the iPad of different side-by-side multitasking apps that can be easily flipped through or some other way of redesigning the way it works), and enhanced Apple Pencil support to do pressure-sensitive actions similar to 3D Touch across the entire system. They might need to also open up the SDK to allow developers to do more advanced things like they can on the Mac, such as installing (at least limited) system-level functionality such cross-app support. Right now I can't even work in Coda for iPad on my current project because it needs a separate app to compile SASS in the background (CodeKit watches the project folder when I'm working in Coda on my Mac). Or enabling drag and drop across the split view so you can work between the two apps quickly and easily.

I would also say that they should make a "Pro" App Store section where developers can apply for approval and showcase some of the most incredible apps for the iPad. Developers could charge a premium price in that area and it wouldn't look out of place. The iPad Pro could one day be as fast as a MacBook Pro, have incredible productivity features similar to a Mac, but could suffer if Apple doesn't help the developers get off the ground due to the low price points that are common on the App Store. Pro software is often specialized, which means they won't sell as many copies. Apple needs to somehow find a way to promote that niche software to the Pros who need it most and have the money to spend on quality software.

So now that I've got the biggest features out of the way, I think the iciing on the cake would be enhanced 3D Touch support system-wide, opening an NFC API which would be useful for home automation like unlocking the front door really fast without needing to open an app, and PiP video for iPhone.

What would take it to the next level and wouldn't be super difficult is more control over settings in iOS. Why are my only options for how long to keep messages 30 days, 1 year or forever? Why can't I just set how long, such as four months, so my phone has more storage? I rarely reference a text older than three or four months, but 1 month seems pretty short, and storing several gigs for one year seems wasteful, especially on smaller iPhones. And while we're talking about messages, why can't I get a simple setting for how long the interval should be between repeated alerts? And why is it when I'm on my iMac, iPhone, or iPad, my other devices are also buzzing me, sometimes a minute later? I'd like a setting to mute my other devices while I'm using something else. I also think there should be a way to customize what shortcuts show up in my Control Center. It would be great to put other toggles and app shortcuts there. And why isn't there an API for developers to make animated wallpapers so that my only options aren't a handful of moving Apple wallpapers or Live Photos? And why can't I pin a few pieces of data like a temperature widget to my lock screen? Or set do not disturb schedules for different days of the week? And why can't I set a third party app as the default for handling email, calendars, browser, etc? And why can't I hide default apps? If Apple could give us half these options I'd be extremely happy. Some of these options I've wanted since the iPhone in 2007, haha.

Samsung is miles ahead in innovation. Apple is just catching up.

How so? I just came back from an S7 Edge and while it LOOKS nice....the software is still so far behind. I tried a Nexus 6P and the S7E and I still found myself with a boring iPhone...why? Because everything works....even with the little minor quirks and bugs in each iteration of iOS there are zero issues and extreme ease of use. My fat fingers rubbed on the edges of the Edge which killed my experience, gaming is terrible without having to disable half of their copycat "GameCenter" processes with Package Disabler Pro, the stock keyboard is bloatware, and their emojis are ugly....So besides their phones finally looking different, what is so innovative about Samsung? All those extreme internals and having to disable 80% of the stock processes of Android, the lag and user experience was still worse than a 6S.

It is sad. Not only that I find lack of stability disturbing.

Airplane Mode definitely turns off GPS. It's been that way since GPS chips have been in iPhones and iPads. It doesn't make sense because a GPS radio is receive-only and perfectly functional without cellular assistance.

What I want is a Cellular Data button in Control Center. It was handy when I had jailbroken my cellular iPad and used the free T-Mobile 200MB data plan. Quick and easy to turn on the data exactly when I needed it and turn it off to save each little bit of data. It would also be handy when flying since I want the Bluetooth on for my Apple Watch and wireless headphones and the Wi-Fi on for streaming video web browsing.

Airplane Mode was made for a time before in-flight Wi-Fi and Apple Watches existed. The functionality could be changed to just turn off cellular data and be just as effective for most people while being easier for some people.
It absolutely DOES NOT turn off GPS. GPS is receive only and not turned off in airplane mode. Try it. It doesn't turn it off. It only turns off RF transmission (cellular, wifi, and bluetooth) you can then turn on wifi and bluetooth with their respective buttons. Again, try it. I've been doing this ever since before control center came out. I had an iPad2 with cellular (the only version of the iPad at the time that had gps) when they came out and would put it into airplane mode then turn on wifi so I wouldn't accidentally use my data. It was a little harder back then because you had to go into settings to do it but it worked. I know from experience that it works.

This is the feature that I supposedly can't live without?
The worst thing they have ever done to iOS was the redesign by Ive. This will go a long way to fix the horrible design changes of the OS made in iOS7. Now if they could get rid of the "flat" crap, and give the interface a little depth, that would be great.

iOS 6 was flatter than iOS 7, there definetely was no depth till iOS 7.
Perhaps the shading of the letters?
iOS 6 was lagging behind in time and was long overdue for a esthetic upgrade.

You have that backwards. iOS 7 is when the introduced the "flat" design. They took away drop shadows and shading and made the icons look more flat. Also they removed "buttons" in favor of just text that you would click on. It wasn't an esthetic upgrade, but a downgrade. Sure they could have made some changes to update it, but they made it objectively worse in terms of intuitive usability and clearly conveying information. Take for example the time at the top of the home screen. They took away the shadow bar behind it making it impossible to read clearly if the background was similar to the text color. Also making the icons more "flat" takes away visual cues to make finding the app you want to use. Which makes things slower and more annoying.

Awesome news, if true. I've long wondered at how stupid phone and OS makers are, or if they truly never use their products at night or in the dark. It's just sad that it took this long to realize it.

I would suggest using transparent PNG files instead of JPG's for a start for images and/or logos. Make the text in your signature a nice professional shade of grey that can be easily seen and read using both white and black backgrounds. Anything picked up as regular text should be turned white automatically in a dark mode.

- crazy. No email program will do that. It will just convert back to a white background like mail does on windows Phone when in dark mode. I highly doubt Apple will bring out a dark mode and Android has moved away from this also.
