Music videos in Apple Music? I'm actually kind of excited about this. Though perhaps it should be called Apple Multimedia at that point.

Also, I don't understand what the hoopla is about iMessages in the Cloud? They're synced across all devices anyway (except for my SE without a SIM in it for some reason).

They usually come in to most of your devices (although clearly not always), but when you delete the thread on one they don’t all get deleted. iMessage in iCloud is supposed to sync everything and also allow you to restore iMessages without doing a full restore (a la Contacts, Health, Mail, etc.).

I don’t understand how iMessages in the Cloud can be so difficult to release.

As it stands right now my messages sync with my Mac and whenever you backup your phone all of the messages are backed up too.

I don’t see the big deal with the messages actively syncing with the cloud AND your devices.

Not sure either but I remember it being extremely buggy in the few betas it was included in.

I think an extension of the health app is very good.

It might be helpful if you could opt out (preferences) aspects that don't interest you.

Otherwise, the overview becomes rather confusing (similar to the proliferating "diversity" of emoticons).

was this really worth having a PR statement over before releasing?

a few new animojis and AR kit that people still won't tap into much, makes that much of a difference?

Looks like they're having another swing at Message in iCloud. From the release notes: -

Messages in iCloud

iOS 11.3 beta 1 includes Messages in iCloud for testing and evaluation purposes. Messages will prompt users to turn on Messages in iCloud on first launch after upgrading to beta 1. Please note that Messages in iCloud is automatically enabled for users who have two-factor authentication and iCloud Backup enabled.

Here's why we want iMessages in the Cloud: When you format your mac or even turn it off while on Vacation, those messages don't go to it. So when you format, you have no messages to start. And when you turned off your computer or deactivated imessages while you're away, then you are missing all those messages as well. So everything is then out of sync.
Also when restoring iPhone as a new device all iMessages will be gone. Correct?

Feels odd that a feature like Animoji needs to be enabled via a software patch. Apple should really look at decoupling these kind of stuff from the core OS and maybe look into App Store updates or even cloud updates for such minor stuff?

Right. They've mostly done it the same on macOS — there's apps that ship with the OS (such as Safari), and apps that are available as third-party (such as Final Cut Pro), but very little overlap between the two (iTunes is perhaps the most notable exception).

They could make it so that an app both ships with the OS and is available as a third-party update, but the end-user benefit, while there, is relatively small, and deployment complexity would increase significantly.

(If you take Messages like in your example: if you do decouple it from OS updates, that means it works with multiple OS versions. Does that mean Messages 11 also works in 10? Because otherwise, there's not much point to it, right? But if so, do you backport some iOS 11 features to iOS 10 specifically for Messages? Or do you instead resist using iOS 11-specific new framework features in Messages?)

Heh. Sync is hard, man. Real hard.

Apple can be criticized here because they promised and didn't deliver. But it's no trivial feat.

(Notably, most end-to-end-encrypted messengers don't offer anything like this at all. For example, you cannot, at all, use WhatsApp on multiple computers. Your client is always on the phone.)

HEY MESSAGES IN iCLOUD HAVE BEEN ADDED!!!!

Boy, I've been waiting on Animoji. Who cares about fixing bugs and improving the UI.
Tru dat. Who needs an improved UI when we can have a skull Animoji to play with? I don’t think they would do it but wouldn’t it be cool to have a Steve Jobs Animoji? Some of us could pretend we were Steve scolding Tim.

I disagree with this. There's no way Apple would advertise such a huge feature and then pull back on it because "a small start up will have to first demonstrate" that it works. Absolutely not. Why even advertise the feature then?

They did it before in the example I gave. iCloud’s file storage and sharing feature (then known as iDisk) performed so badly that Steve Jobs reportedly scolded the feature’s custodians. If I recall correctly, the feature was temporarily discontinued, or whittled down, until Apple could solve the issues. In an effort to replace their failure with a viable solution sooner, Jobs met with Dropbox’s founder and tried to persuade him to sell.

Clearly we need Apple Team Animoji to fix iTunes* and build the mMac Pro. They seem to be the only ones doing anything.

*This is a metaphor for everything wrong with Apple software.

A free, minor update ships with several new features, such as major ARKit improvements and Health Records.

And then…

"The Animoji seem to be the only ones doing anything."

…what?

iMessages in the cloud!!! Where is it??

Messages is the only thing that prevents ‘Set as new phone’ to be always used by me. I don’t like to restore backups and I have to because of Messages.

They could at least give an option to only restore messages when restoring an iCloud backup.

Apple trolled us! It’s back on iOS 11.3. I hope it stays!

All I want is an update that finally modifies the giant volume icon so it doesn’t block 1/3 of the screen. Wasn’t that going to be in 11?

... and iMessage for ALL!
... and multiple accounts on Homepod.
... and ... sorry got sad.

Neither of those were ever promised?
Not sure what you mean??

WhatsApp for example I can view on my iPhone and my MacBook Pro. If I delete the message on my MacBook Pro it deletes on my phone and vice versa.

WhatsApp messages exist exclusively on your phone. Your MacBook Pro cannot actually connect to WhatsApp's servers; instead, it can connect to your phone, which is the 'real' WhatsApp client.

This is because WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption only ever has one key per person. There are no multiple devices.

iMessage, instead, allows multiple keys and therefore multiple devices, by encrypting each message and received with all of those keys.

Control center is not supposed to be the most frequently used apps. The dock is supposed to be the most frequently used apps. Control center is intended to be quicker access to things that used to be buried in the settings app, but which still are not accessed all that often.

But Control Center does have shortcuts to some apps, such as Flashlight (yes, I know it doesn't exist as its own reachable app), Calculator, and Camera.

I very frequently flick up Control Center for the flashlight, and if I had a X, I would presumably be annoyed by how much harder that is to pull off now. On the 8, I can easily do it with my thumb.
