I'm not sure about this one. Whilst yes, it makes sense to insert this tech everywhere they can.... I also think iPads remain flat for the most part. Holding it up to log you in.... I can't see that being as convenient as it is on a lighter device that you spend most of its use-time holding anyways. I believe TouchID will remain on iPads until they're able to increase the range of viewing angles with FaceID.

Mac computers on the other hand....

So it would have been allright for you if apple made the iphone x with a black bezel on top? You would get less viewing area/smaller screen if they did that. If i had too choose, i would go for the notch.
I'd rather not as the amount of information displayed on either side of the notch is minimal. It also limits fullscreen video.... though so do the curved corners.... and games.

The notch doesn’t bother me. But not sure I’d want Face ID on. I mainly have my iPad Pro laying at a low angle on my desk next to my MacBook Pro, and won’t want to stand up and look down at it every time I want to unlock it.

Yeah if they force this on the iPad Pro line, then I'll have to find an alternative. Mine is used in super low light, landscape mode most of the time. I'm always using a Touch ID to approve my kids' purchases. I definitely much prefer Touch ID and won't have a Face ID device anytime soon.

I suspect that this is where Apple and I part ways, so I'm glad I got 512GB of storage on my last iPad. They have stopped producing computers that I like, and I don't care about the phones that much anymore. The iPad is by far my most used device though, so I hope I'm wrong.

Ok, so you would be happier with a 5.7 inch screen with a black upper bezel.
I rather have the 5.8. You yourself can determine if video overlaps the notch, when filmed in the right aspect ratio, if it is not , like in most videos, it doesn’ t matter , zooming also cuts in the upper and lower part of the screen, that bothers me more, than the notch.

Your perception is that apple is cutting off content. My perception is that i get a little more usuable screen area because of the notch.

why not mutliuser FaceID?

Yeah, why not? Could be the case with this new ipad and ios 11.5 or something, same thing applies for landscape faceid.
Both could be possible with a new ipad, we don’ t know yet, so...

To be honest I don't watch movies on my iphone or iPad at all and exclusively watch films on a TV. However when it comes to watching clips or (trying) to play an iOS game if my Switch isn't to hand then I did feel like it was in the way, as no necessary information can be stored in such a tiny zone. Except for numerical info but that then just looks awkward.

I wonder if they could simply flip the device so there's a chin of sensors instead of a forehead. Meh. I gave it a shot and settled on an 8+ instead... for now... but I do wonder where the next iPads will go considering I use one for work.

iPad with FaceID is a natural progression, but isn’t an iPad more often a multi-user device? This is where TouchID is handy for having multiple people’s fingerprints verified.
I agree on iPad (also) being a multi-user device but I wouldn't use the word "progression" here.

Anyway, if these rumours are correct, I am glad I bought iPad Pro 12.9 2nd Gen while I could ...

I couldn't agree more. Especially on the Mac. I assume the next Macs and MacPro will have it integrated.
One thing I miss on the iPad is the iPhone X interface. It's quicker and makes a lot more sense.
If the next 12.9 iPad comes out with Face ID, slimmer bezel, new interface and higher resolution I'll struggle to stay away.
It sure is going to feel good and be so quick to pick up the iPad every time I want to unlock. Or tower over it when it is laying on the table.

I can assure you that's certainly not how 'the majority' of people use it.

No one I know uses it with multiple users—perhaps younger families might and I expect there are those that use it simply for email, video clip watching, etc but for those that are using a Pro fairly seriously, particularly the 12.9, I don’t think they see it as a multiple user device. Most people I know use it as an individual device—each person in the household has their own. I’ve never shared my desktop nor laptop either. I don’t care, notch or not, narrow bezel or not, face ID or not, will likely upgrade from my gen 1 12.9. And—I will be comfortable with more gestures rather than a home button.

FaceID actually works better low light scenarios (it uses infrared, not visible light).

Other than that I agree with you.

My in laws use a first gen 12.9 as their primary computer besides iPhones. They don't have touch ID setup on it (because they thought they could only do one finger print), but it is a shared device for them. More often than not they use their phones, but for longer term browsing they use the iPad.

Ha

Have people not used the five (or four hand or whatever) gesture on iPad lately? It's f****** horrible. It doesn't flow like it used to and now with that drag and drop b*******, it's a frustrating gesture. Please, if Apple decides to remove TouchID, they need to make sure iOS gets the long waited tune up.
