I believe they are talking about the iCloud breach that happened a few years ago, nothing to do with phones. If I remember correctly, people were socially engineered (tricked) into giving out their passwords or Apple was tricked into resetting them can't remember all the details. The other part of that statement, well, I'm glad Apple takes privacy seriously...

The problem was Apple only let you pick from a limited set of "security questions". Mother's maiden name? Lol, you can look that up for any celebrity.

Fragmentation?
It only matters if you buy a carrier locked device.
Stick to an unlocked device with a manufacturer that actively updates.

Now if you want to argue build quality, etc.
That's different.
Even Pixel phones have 3 or 2 times shorter life when new OS is available for it.

You should switch 2 factor on. I believe it’s default now.

I'm starting to think that having old versions of an OS running is not a bad thing. Going to iOS 11, I see a huge decline in performance on my iPhone 6. I assume that it's pretty difficult to create an OS meant for new hardware but still able to support old hardware efficiently. JMO If i could go back to iOS 10 I would.

I suspect OS migration benefits Apple more than it does users, especially for the reason you mention. And as others have noted, it’s almost impossible not to migrate when Apple persistently notifies you to do so.

I don’t mind that Apple can’t/won’t support older OS versions, but they shouldn’t brick them either. It would be nice to have an archive of older apps in the App Store for owners of older devices.

This is one of the main reasons I don't use Android phones. I can understand OEMs being lazy and not releasing updates for their crappy phones but even Google doesn't support their own branded phones all that long.
What are you talking about? Google gives Pixel 2 XL 3 years of OS and security updates.

Google doesn't slow down battery when they release a new OS

IDK if Bluetooth costs nothing in terms of power. I turn it off because I don't have any BT accessories, and it's a common vector for malicious exploits. Same with NTP; iPhones were getting bricked by that "set time to 0" bug ~2 years ago. Best to turn things off if you don't use them.
Bluetooth is not just for AirPods. It allows sharing clipboard across devices, AirDrop, transferring settings to a new device, sharing Wi-Fi password with guests...

CPU, not battery. So is Google just ignores unexpected shutdowns when battery not healthy enough to deliver current?

iOS devices support new versions for at least 5 years or more.

Counter argument is iOS is the only mobile OS to have leaked people's private nude pictures all over the internet while protecting terrorists and pedophiles.
If you are referring to stupid celebrities who didn't properly lock down their accounts/nudes then yes. Plus their accounts were hacked, not leaked by Apple. Nice try at "alternative facts" though!

Regarding the San Bernadino shooters (Im guessing thats what you're talking about). The police could have easily got into the phone if they would have contacted Apple instead of trying dozens of failed unlock attempts which then completely locked access to the phone. Seems like the proper training is needed with law enforcement and today's tech rather than Apple creating "special software". All of it could've been easily avoided.

I really didn't want to install IOS 11 even though I was sick and tired of being "asked" to upgrade at least twice a day. Well technically I didn't upgrade but my kid did while playing with my phone thinking the "later" option meant another time, lot later that day. I would downgrade back to 10 and i know many of my friends would too but Apple forces updates and won't allow downgrading just so they can brag about the % on IOS 11.

There’s an archive. If you attempt to download app from old iOS version it will allow you to download latest available version.

Why would you and your friends want to downgrade? Don’t you care about security, bug fixes and new features? Sometimes even better performance.

Years later the same alternative facts are still being spun to try to make something out of them. Seems like if those are still the potshots that being taken then there really isn't much to take aim after all.

Sigh...

I get so tired of Apple and MacRumors gloating this. It's purely by design. iOS makes every attempt to shove the latest update down your throat. Of course adoption is going to be high. I give kudos to those in the 19%, let alone the 5%.

The only way I can prevent iOS from downloading the latest iOS to my device automatically (since you cannot disable this in the System settings) is to keep my storage capacity above 90%.

I guess I am one of the few that wonders why this matters and the relevance. Apple has high iOS 11 installations because they will nag you until you yield. All it means to me is they are good at nagging you enough to install so more people can experience the greatness of iOS 11 bugs and poor quality control.
What a lot of people seem to overlook (on purpose or not) is that the stats aren't for those types of purposes, they are mainly there for developers so that they know what the breakdown is when it comes to what versions are running on different devices.

I'm sure somebody posted this already, but doesn't Google routinely update the core apps separate from Android? So while yes, the OS is outdated, the main Google apps (mail, chrome, launcher, etc.) receive updates and overhauls through the play store. I know that doesn't make a clickable story, but I'm pretty sure the situation is not that dire.

There is something odd about the statistic. "As measured by the App Store on April 22, 2018." What does that mean? They measured all devices which used the app store on that day or are they talking about ALL devices in the world?
That's more or less an example of how polling and statistics work.

iPhone 6 should stay on 10.3.3 unless you really need the updated versions of all of the first party apps (iWork, GarageBand, iMovie, etc.) I “updated” my iPad Air to 11.3 after waiting a couple of months and it was a mistake. It was completely smooth on 10.3.3. Yes, I’ll be able to use the latest versions of apps for a longer period of time but in exchange for losing performance and battery life. I really think anything less than an A9/A10 shouldn’t go near iOS 11. It’s clearly more resource intensive. There hasn’t been such a big difference in resource use since iOS 6 to iOS 7. On my 4s, 7, 8 and 9 all had the same performance. The same on my ancient iPad 2. However they’re both still useable on 9.3.5. These devices do suffer from not having 802.11ac. App update times is very slow on a 100+ Mb connection since they max out around 40 Mb/s and the A5 just can’t process the average larger file sizes quickly.

However if you made the jump to iOS 11 on an older device (5s/6/6s), I expect that performance on iOS 12 will be the same for the most part. I think it’ll be similar to iOS 9 performance for people who were already on iOS 8 on older devices like the 4s and 5.

As a webdeveloper (even though Safari on iOS has sometimes really weird bugs / behaviours), I can't be more happy to read this. You can use the latest HTML / CSS / JavaScript features on iOS without thinking if somebody is still using iOS7 that was not supporting it. On the other hand Chrome on Android is not a bad browser even on the older versions.

There should be more phones like Pixel, because Google is really puting a lot of effort into UI design, so why bother with developing custom UI, which I think it still won't be more usable than pure Android.

No they don't, if they did, then electric vehicles and Android phones would have to do the same thing.
This happens when battery is not healthy enough to deliver current. Now power management can be disabled in iOS.

I really don’t know why there’s no information about how Android approach this problem. It’s eather people not interested or there’s so many devices and manufacturers each of them has their own solution and mostly probably just ignore the problem to make device become not comfortable to use so they can sell more. I’m also suspecting that Android devices have larger batteries because OS is much more hungry. I’m sure that devices with similar battery capacity have the same problem.

Cars work differently. They have much larger batteries. Note that iPad doesn’t have this problem. It’s just the battery is so big it will never age to the point it can’t deliver current any more.

Security questions are not that great or safe, not sure why everyone uses them.

Most of value and usage comes from third party apps. If OS out of date developers forced to use older API which is bad on many levels. Even though Google can update system apps they can’t take advantage of system level features and improvements. Also it’s a sign of weak security. Each iOS app is protected by system integrity check whcib does t allow change unless it’s ne who’s update with new certificate.

Part of that 5% on my 9.7 iPad Pro running iOS 9.3.4.
You should update. I have iPad Air 2 on iOS 11 and it’s better than 10 and especially 9.

People love to blame the user when it's convenient for their argument. Truth is a proper security system would've reduced the risk of this happening because the folks that also had Google account was unaffected on the Google side. Keep apologizing and nothing will change.
