Apple clearly hasn't heard the footsteps (Pixel, Galaxy, LG). It may be too late now.
I so wish you were right, it might motivate them more, but the numbers say otherwise. Just look how much revenue the iPhone and App store generates for Apple - they will not make any radical changes now. They will not rock the money boat.

I can only hope they are keeping the wraps on the major improvements and refinements to iOS because they would give away the new features of the iPhone 8. If not then this is shaping up to be a sleeper of a year for the software capabilities which ultimately drives the usefulness of the devices. This sound more like iOS 10.4 rather than a full version increment.

Technically they did make radical changes to the App Store. I'm not sure I like it but it is a major design change.

I'll withhold final judgement until the "little things" they updated come to light, but the entire presentation was shockingly light on user facing software improvements.

Maybe this is the Snow Leopard style release everyone was asking for... they do seem to have some big new APIs for devs however.

I'm not updating. I don't need more bugs and faster battery drain for this.
That's not fair to say! Don't forgot the benefit of having your legacy apps rendered unlaunchable.

You know, for your own good. Apple knows best.

PS: Pray you never have to reset your device or hand it in for repair. Latest iOS or BUST. Enjoy your device "ownership".

I really like the new Control Center!

Still no dark mode :(

Any why are they bringing Music App's oversized UI to AppStore and Messages? :(
I could be wrong, but I believe they implemented a dark mode after all! In the screen shown for three seconds there was one that says "Redesigned Invert Colors". It should work like the one in the Apple Store app leaked a couple of days ago. So we should have dark mode, but it just wasn't emphasized.

No leaks = nothing major / leak worthy.

This was their chance to really do something (anniversary of iPhone etc) and honestly, it's awful.
My opinion, is that they've run out of ideas OR they aren't updating anything major to keep people who aren't tech savvy happy using the system.

Obviously, when the beta's go live and we're all allowed to have a rummage through the OS (which I will be doing immediately) hopefully there is some better things, however on the face of it, their main key point presentations were awful for users and developers and really weren't worth the price that the tickets hold on face value.

I'm a fan of Apple Pay to person to person . That will be useful but overall it seems like iOS 10.4 not 11 .

Control center looks complicated . Lots of tiny changes and nothing really "dialed up to 11".

Maybe they will finally fix podcasts app . It drives me crazy that you are forced to auto play your podcasts or set timers to go to sleep . Most people have several podcast feeds and don't want to marathon binge watch them all at once .

I'll reserve judgement until I see the full thing, but likewise I'm not seeing any compelling reasons.
Of course; it's just the small things that would sway this and actually make it worthwhile - if they simply introduce a toggle to disable iMessages graffiti, control over unwanted gestures, and give us back one of the better app switchers...

I have a question that maybe someone who is a tech journalist or otherwise "in the know" hopefully can answer: is the reason why Apple repeatedly refuses to redesign the home screen because of some kind of patent issue? Put another way, does Google own certain generalized patents on the Android OS home screen design and that's why Apple won't redesign the iOS home screen to something similar?

I have to say, the app grid layout on the home screen is going on 10 years old now. The lack of widgets or any other useful features akin to android is wearing on me.

PS - Can a jailbreak allow me to configure the home screen to something like that? Never really thought of myself as someone who'd jailbreak my phone, but Apple's arrogant refusal to offer a useful home screen is pushing me towards that.
