Apple doesn’t believe in a no win scenario.
I hope the new iPad is fast. Time is a luxury I don’t have.
Apple doesn’t believe in a no win scenario.
A tablet is never going to replace a laptop. Try programming on a touch screen.
iPad Pros are basically toys designed for watching Youtube and web surfing on the couch.
I don't know why Apple doesn't offer a native way to use an iPad as a 2nd/extended display.
you can't really use an external monitor without mouse support, right?
The iPad is already cannibalizing Mac sales across the board. 12 years ago, if you wanted a non-Windows way to check your email, surf the web and perform computing type tasks, you used a Mac. Today, there are millions that are finding that their needs are met with one iOS device or another. This would mark a major milestone in iPad’s evolution into a laptop replacement. Wouldn’t it cannibalize MacBook sales?
If you can connect your iPad to a 27” external monitor, mouse, and keyboard, it could (potentially) be great for programming.
How is it inferior? Seems to be the opposite, especially if you count mechanical stuff like the Lightning connector falling out. It is a bit thicker, though. All the ports on the entire Mac range are industry standard.
USB-C is still an inferior connector to Lightning.
You can use even the cheapest laptop and still have a better setup for programming (and general work). You really don't want a feature-limited OS when you're doing that stuff. If you can connect your iPad to a 27” external monitor, mouse, and keyboard, it could (potentially) be great for programming.
Every feature the ecosystem has to support can be a much bigger burden than you'd imagine. Apple has always* been about "less is more," and other companies caught on long ago. What's the big deal about adding mouse support? If you can't sleep at night knowing that the iPad can use a mouse, then DON'T USE ONE! For others (like every other feature) it's there for you to use or not.

Now I'm going to need a USB-C to Lightning adapter for my Lightning to 3.5mm adapter so I can use my headphones with this iPad Pro?![]()
iPad Pro represents a paradigm shift, whic is still oblivious to the majority of laptop users. If you can connect your iPad to a 27” external monitor, mouse, and keyboard, it could (potentially) be great for programming.
Honestly, this would be a welcome change. The iPad doesn't exactly have the marketshare of the iPhone, so it would be a logical place to start to test out how USB-C would work with iOS devices. Of course, if they decide to go all in on USB-C, we'll have a repeat of the 30 pin to Lightning days where people complain about their stuff no longer working. 1 cord for everything is nice though, it's a bit annoying looking at which end of a USB-C/Lightning cable is the proper end as it is. Apple hasn't exactly been doing much with Lightning these days anyways, iirc, the iPhone still only supports USB 2.0 speeds (at least on the X/8) while the iPad Pro's have 16 pins in the lightning port to utilize USB 3.0. Not sure if this will remain to be the case with the Xs though.
I mean, they already use one port for the MBP anyways, sooo...
Agreed. Lightning has made my audio recording a pain. So many audio input devices out there do not support ligntning. Not going to read 6+ pages of posts... Just want to say that they would be foolish, downright stupid, to not go USB-C on the new iPad Pro. It’s already a mistake that the iPhone X and now Xs / Xr are not going USB-C. Have to acknowledge Lightning only existed (by Apple’s own admission) because USB-C was behind schedule and then persisted as proprietary because the USB Consotium was disinterested in adopting it. I’m kinda sad that Lightning didn’t get adopted as a USB connector standard — the connectors have proven to be surprisingly robust... Cables failing due to poor construction where the cable meets the connector is another matter and happens on all daily-use cables, regardless of connector type, when poorly made. Apple’s own cables are not great in this regard. Had the best luck with Anker’s Heavy Duty and PowerLine+ cables myself for both Lightning and other USB types.
Even though iPad is still not a replacement of laptop, I don’t have the need to buy a new laptop anymore. The combination iMac and iPad Pro is the best combination to me.The iPad is already cannibalizing Mac sales across the board. 12 years ago, if you wanted a non-Windows way to check your email, surf the web and perform computing type tasks, you used a Mac. Today, there are millions that are finding that their needs are met with one iOS device or another.
I don't see the goal as replace the Mac, I see it more as .. enable people to do enough things such that there are millions upon millions (not everyone, just millions and millions and millions) that can see iOS as a "place where I can do the things I want/need to do." Remember, by the time the Apple II was discontinued, the Mac didn't do EVERYTHING an Apple II could do, but it did enough things well enough that enough people were willing to overlook what they COULDN'T do on it.
Those who use iPad as a productive tool understand your point well. Those who don’t don’t.... if I had a mouse, I could navigate faster than with touch ...
In a way, this could be their "just one more thing..." The year overall has been pretty lame compared to last year but between watch improvements and pushing the iPad Pro to near laptop status they could end 2018 with a bang.I just can’t see Apple adopting USB-C on the iPad while the iPhone still has lightning. And Apple makes more money off of lightning adapters, I’ll be shocked if this happens this year.
