A tablet is never going to replace a laptop. Try programming on a touch screen.

iPad Pros are basically toys designed for watching Youtube and web surfing on the couch.

If you can connect your iPad to a 27” external monitor, mouse, and keyboard, it could (potentially) be great for programming.

Not going to read 6+ pages of posts... Just want to say that they would be foolish, downright stupid, to not go USB-C on the new iPad Pro. It’s already a mistake that the iPhone X and now Xs / Xr are not going USB-C. Have to acknowledge Lightning only existed (by Apple’s own admission) because USB-C was behind schedule and then persisted as proprietary because the USB Consotium was disinterested in adopting it. I’m kinda sad that Lightning didn’t get adopted as a USB connector standard — the connectors have proven to be surprisingly robust... Cables failing due to poor construction where the cable meets the connector is another matter and happens on all daily-use cables, regardless of connector type, when poorly made. Apple’s own cables are not great in this regard. Had the best luck with Anker’s Heavy Duty and PowerLine+ cables myself for both Lightning and other USB types.

I don't know why Apple doesn't offer a native way to use an iPad as a 2nd/extended display.

How about connecting 2 iPads together for dual displays with touch input? :D

you can't really use an external monitor without mouse support, right?

There are standalone multitouch monitors available and used in different industries. All it takes is an operating system to support true multitouch input, not just single finger mouse emulation.

This would mark a major milestone in iPad’s evolution into a laptop replacement. Wouldn’t it cannibalize MacBook sales?
The iPad is already cannibalizing Mac sales across the board. 12 years ago, if you wanted a non-Windows way to check your email, surf the web and perform computing type tasks, you used a Mac. Today, there are millions that are finding that their needs are met with one iOS device or another.

I don't see the goal as replace the Mac, I see it more as .. enable people to do enough things such that there are millions upon millions (not everyone, just millions and millions and millions) that can see iOS as a "place where I can do the things I want/need to do." Remember, by the time the Apple II was discontinued, the Mac didn't do EVERYTHING an Apple II could do, but it did enough things well enough that enough people were willing to overlook what they COULDN'T do on it.

No.

Maybe for a simple Python or Swift program. Otherwise the lack of multiple window/terminal support in iOS makes it very useless

All the ports on the entire Mac range are industry standard.

USB-C is still an inferior connector to Lightning.
How is it inferior? Seems to be the opposite, especially if you count mechanical stuff like the Lightning connector falling out. It is a bit thicker, though.

You can use even the cheapest laptop and still have a better setup for programming (and general work). You really don't want a feature-limited OS when you're doing that stuff.

What's the big deal about adding mouse support? If you can't sleep at night knowing that the iPad can use a mouse, then DON'T USE ONE! For others (like every other feature) it's there for you to use or not.
Every feature the ecosystem has to support can be a much bigger burden than you'd imagine. Apple has always* been about "less is more," and other companies caught on long ago.

* Except in their crappy 90s phase

Apple have said many times that they don't mind their own devices cannibalising their own devices.

Now I'm going to need a USB-C to Lightning adapter for my Lightning to 3.5mm adapter so I can use my headphones with this iPad Pro?

Whilst you're at it, you could maybe look at a USB-C - RCA adapter so you can use your record player :D

iPad Pro represents a paradigm shift, whic is still oblivious to the majority of laptop users.

Honestly, this would be a welcome change. The iPad doesn't exactly have the marketshare of the iPhone, so it would be a logical place to start to test out how USB-C would work with iOS devices. Of course, if they decide to go all in on USB-C, we'll have a repeat of the 30 pin to Lightning days where people complain about their stuff no longer working. 1 cord for everything is nice though, it's a bit annoying looking at which end of a USB-C/Lightning cable is the proper end as it is. Apple hasn't exactly been doing much with Lightning these days anyways, iirc, the iPhone still only supports USB 2.0 speeds (at least on the X/8) while the iPad Pro's have 16 pins in the lightning port to utilize USB 3.0. Not sure if this will remain to be the case with the Xs though.

I mean, they already use one port for the MBP anyways, sooo...

all usb-c is the logical step, which apple should follow.
theres nothing to think about it - after years of different connectors for diff devices - this MUST come to an end.

We as customers have to enforce this, by demanding and not buying anything else anymore.

Evolution has to success , and hopefully cables will disapear at all, like dongle hell! have 3 of them in front of me!

Agreed. Lightning has made my audio recording a pain. So many audio input devices out there do not support ligntning.

Sorry to be a wet blanket in the hydride debate but a simpler explanation would be to be able to chose output resolution when giving presentations. As the article points out, you cannot do that today as the iPad send out 1024X768 what ever the external display is. The iPad (and iPhone) output does not take advantage of high res screens and this suggest that it will in the future and that would be great.

If 4k requires a USB-C port we will see a USB-C. If the lightning port (or rather the chipset behind it) can handle 4K I do not think we will see a switch.

Lighting to USB-C cables for use with more powerful power bricks is most welcome.

Even though iPad is still not a replacement of laptop, I don’t have the need to buy a new laptop anymore. The combination iMac and iPad Pro is the best combination to me.

FWIW, Lightning is a fully-functional USB connector equivalent and is good to support current USB 3.x and beyond. Lighting is just USB with a different plug at the end... So no, the upcoming iPad Pro does not need a USB-C connector in order to output 4K. Just the proper adapter to get the signal out to the appropriate HDMI or DisplayPort interface. So we’re probably getting our hopes up here for no reason as Apple may not want to switch from Lightning. I still stand by my above statement though... They’re making a mistake by continuing to use Lightning, it truly gains them nothing and is causing a compatibility rift between iOS devices and their computers when it comes to commonly used connectors and plugging in earbuds/headphones. Rest of the industry is going USB-C when replacing their old 3.5mm jacks and plugs.

Apple's version of Samsung's DeX seems closer to being reality than ever now. Please be true......

... if I had a mouse, I could navigate faster than with touch ...
Those who use iPad as a productive tool understand your point well. Those who don’t don’t.
[doublepost=1537426161][/doublepost]This news hints that Apple has break through in two things: commercializing its MicroLED display and the future progregress of A-series chip.

Those are for if you are testing for CarPlay Screens, or Television resolution for AppleTV testing, um? me thinks...

the samsung galaxy note 9 supports 4k 60hz via usbc to hdmi 2.0 kabel out of the box using the samsung Dex enhancement of android, btw. you can use a mouse and a keybord (bluetooth) on this setup.

Not sure the point of iOS on an external display without mouse and window management...aka, MacOS.

And airplay is good enough to project your videos/photos or presentations.

Maybe it’s time to put MacOS on the iPad. Tablet mode iOS, Display mode MacOS.

Would be a dream to be able to connect iPad to MacBook as second display/ drawing tablet without the need for third party software

Nice, hope they do this also on the next iPhone. Probably, Apple will have to do so to comply with EU adapter regulations.
So, only one connector type and external screens (both ways) :)

I just can’t see Apple adopting USB-C on the iPad while the iPhone still has lightning. And Apple makes more money off of lightning adapters, I’ll be shocked if this happens this year.
In a way, this could be their "just one more thing..." The year overall has been pretty lame compared to last year but between watch improvements and pushing the iPad Pro to near laptop status they could end 2018 with a bang.
